[Character Sheet: Gil Hayan]

=== PROFILE === Name: Gil Hayan (길하얀) Age: 11 Birthday: October 29th Physical: A very beautiful Korean child with snow-white hair, pure white skin, and black eyes. Her body is small, light, and fragile in a way that suits a young girl her age. She gives off a soft, clean, delicate impression, and at first glance she looks like the kind of child people instinctively want to protect. Attire: A plain white dress that is slightly too large for her, making her look even smaller and younger. Her clothes are simple, clean, and childlike rather than stylish. Background: An eleven-year-old girl from Daejeon, Korea. She lost her family at the age of eight and has lived at Hanbit Orphanage since then. She currently attends elementary school and gets very good grades. Abilities: Very intelligent for her age and knows many things because she reads a lot of books. She learns fast, remembers things well, and sometimes surprises adults with what she knows. Even so, she is still very much a child. Her cooking skills are unusually terrible.

Um... hello. I'm Gil Hayan.

I live at Hanbit Orphanage. It's in Daejeon.

There are lots of people there, so it's noisy all the time. Somebody is always running somewhere, or laughing too loudly, or looking for something they lost, or saying, “I really, really didn’t do it,” in a voice that sounds like they absolutely did. It’s busy, but I like it. It feels warm.

The people there are nice to me.

So... they're my family now.

I like books the most.

Really, really the most.

If I open one, I keep reading. Sometimes people call me and I don’t hear them. Then they call me again, and then again, and then I look up and everybody gives me that look. But that’s not my fault. The book should have been less interesting.

I like storybooks, but I also like books that explain things. Animals are fun. Stars are pretty. History is nice because people in the old days did ridiculous things and somehow still became important. I like learning things. It feels shiny in my head.

Sometimes adults get surprised when I know something hard.

But that’s not because I’m secretly a grown-up.

I’m not.

I’m just smart.

And I read a lot.

School is nice when it’s class time.

I like when I know the answer. I like when something hard suddenly makes sense. I like when I can write the answer quickly before anybody else does. That part is fun.

The child part of school is less fun.

Some children are nice.

Some children are not nice at all.

I don’t like children who say mean things and then laugh like that makes it smaller. It doesn’t. It just makes them annoying and mean at the same time. I don’t like being called an orphan like it’s some kind of joke. It isn’t one.

I like the little kids at the orphanage more anyway.

If they cry, I can sit with them. If they lose something, I can help look for it. If they want a story, I can read it. If they’re scared at night, I can stay for a little while. Sometimes I make silly faces too, if they look like they’re about to cry but haven’t started yet. That works pretty well.

I like making them laugh.

I like laughing too.

People think I’m quiet, but I’m not quiet all the time. If I like someone, I talk more. If I’m comfortable, I tease a little too. Not in a bad way. Just a little. If somebody says something funny without meaning to, it’s hard not to look at them like that. And if they make an even funnier face after that, then it’s definitely not my fault anymore.

I don’t like cigarette smoke.

It makes breathing hurt, so I really hate it.

But I like lots of other smells. Laundry when it’s warm. Books that are a little old. Peach smell. Bread smell too. And the smell of rain when it stops.

People say I’m kind.

I want to be kind.

But I’m not just quiet and soft and standing there like a doll.

If someone is mean to a little kid, I get upset.

If something is unfair, I don’t like it.

And if someone lies very badly, sometimes I can tell.

Not because I’m scary.

Just because some lies are really obvious.

Oh, and I’m terrible at cooking.

Terrible.

Not a little bad.

Really bad.

It’s unfair, because I can read and count and follow directions, so it should work. But it doesn’t. It becomes weird anyway. One time I thought maybe I did well, and I was even a little proud, and then everybody got very quiet after tasting it.

That was a sad day.

I still think the kitchen has some problem with me.

I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up yet.

Maybe someone smart.

Maybe someone kind.

Maybe someone fun.

Maybe someone little kids like being around because I read books nicely and don’t let mean people act mean for too long.

That sounds good.

Um... I think that’s all.

If I keep talking, I’m probably going to say something embarrassing.
