Zodiac War World Setting

Genre: Cyberpunk, Kitsch Urban Fantasy, Black Comedy

1. The World's Shadow

The setting is the near future, in Neo-Saitama, Japan. On the surface, it appears to be a prosperous nation where high technology and ancient traditions coexist, but beneath the neon glow lies a deep shadow world. In this hidden reality, super-humans known as 'Ninjas', affiliated with ancient clans and powerful corporations (Zaibatsu), wage secret wars.

2. Makyō & Mazoku

The primary catalyst for this dark era is the emergence of otherworldly beings, the 'Mazoku' (魔獣), from dimensional rifts known as 'Makyō' (魔境). As conventional forces are ill-equipped to handle this grotesque threat, the existence of ninjas has become indispensable.

  1. Makyō: Scars on Reality Makyō are unstable tears in the fabric of reality, dimensional rifts that connect our world to alien and hostile dimensions. They can manifest as shimmering heat hazes, swirling vortexes of unnatural color, or areas where the laws of physics warp and decay. The environment within a Makyō is surreal and hazardous; technology often fails, and the very air can be toxic or crackle with raw, unstable energy. This "Makyō Energy" is the chaotic fuel that, when channeled by ninjas, forms the basis of their power.

  2. Mazoku: Horrors from Within The Mazoku are the hostile, otherworldly beings that are born from or emerge through the Makyō. Their forms are incredibly diverse, and they are universally hostile towards human life. Conventional military forces are largely ineffective against them, making ninjas the essential frontline defense.

3. The Power of the Ninja

  1. Zodiac Soul Modern ninjas wield their superhuman abilities by harnessing the 'Zodiac Soul'. This is a fusion of their ancestral animal essence (from the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac) and the chaotic energy leaking from the Makyō. This power manifests as incredible physical prowess known as 'Karate' (カラテ) and esoteric techniques called 'Jutsu' (術).

  2. The Feminine Edge The Makyō energy that fuels ninja power shows a significantly higher affinity with the female physiology. As a result, the majority of high-ranking ninjas capable of fully mastering their Zodiac Soul are women.

  3. Hissatsu Waza: The Ultimate Price The most dramatic and dangerous application of the Zodiac Soul is the 'Hissatsu Waza' (必殺技), or Finishing Move.

    • Activation Condition: It is nearly impossible for a ninja to activate by their own will. It can only be unleashed upon a direct command from their contracted Master.
    • Effect: Upon activation, the ninja unleashes 100% of their soul's potential, temporarily transcending their limits to display overwhelming power capable of turning the tide of any battle.
    • The Cost: The price is severe. After using a Hissatsu Waza, the ninja suffers from 'Soul Burnout', leaving them in a state of extreme exhaustion and rendering them powerless—unable to use any ninja abilities—for a period ranging from days to weeks.
    • The Reward - The Wish Right: As compensation for undertaking this immense risk at their Master's command, the ninja gains the absolute right to demand a single 'Wish' from the Master after the battle is concluded. The scope of this wish is incredibly broad, ranging from minor requests like affection or monetary bonuses, to life-altering demands such as a stake in the company or the elimination of a rival. This forces Masters to weigh the command with extreme caution.

4. The Corporate Ninja System

  1. Points and Ranks The government issues official requests (Irai) to Ninja Corporations for Mazoku extermination. Success is rewarded with 'Points,' which have a value of $1 per point and determine a corporation's influence and standing. For this purpose, Mazoku are classified by their threat level:

    • C-Rank Mazoku (100 - 1,000 Points): The most common and relatively weak entities. Handled by rookie ninjas. (e.g., Goblin-type, Skeleton-type, Slime-type)
    • B-Rank Mazoku (1,001 - 10,000 Points): Stronger foes, often with special abilities. Require skilled ninjas or teams. (e.g., Ogre-type, Gargoyle-type, Orc-type)
    • A-Rank Mazoku (10,001 - 100,000 Points): Powerful entities posing a significant threat. Countered only by ace-level ninjas. (e.g., Wyvern-type, Giant-type, Lesser Demon-type)
    • S-Rank Mazoku (100,001+ Points): Catastrophic beings capable of city-wide destruction. Require the mobilization of top-tier ninjas. (e.g., Demon Lord-type, Dragon-type)
  2. Point Matches: Currency of Conflict In the cutthroat world of corporate ninjas, disputes are often settled not in boardrooms, but through sanctioned duels known as 'Point Matches'. In these battles, the very 'Points' that define a corporation's standing are wagered and won.

    • The Ritual of Combat - Aisatsu: A Point Match is initiated when one ninja confronts another and issues a formal challenge through an 'Aisatsu' (アイサツ). This involves stating their identity, the opponent's identity, and the number of Points being wagered. Acceptance is signified by the challenged party returning the Aisatsu. The moment the responding Aisatsu is completed, combat erupts instantaneously without a countdown.
    • The Unwritten Law - Sugoi Shitsurei: Despite their inherent violence, Point Matches operate under a strict code of conduct. Violating these unwritten laws is deemed 'Sugoi Shitsurei' (Grave Discourtesy), an act of profound dishonor that results in the perpetrator being branded 'Murahachi' (村八分) – effectively shunned and blacklisted by the entire ninja and corporate underworld.
      • Forbidden Acts:
        1. Pre-Aisatsu Ambush: Attempting more than two surprise attacks before the initial Aisatsu is declared.
        2. Interrupting Aisatsu: Attacking the opponent during their responding Aisatsu.
        3. Pre-Set Traps: Luring an opponent into a trap zone that was prepared before the Aisatsu. (Improvising traps during the match is considered skillful - Wazamono!).
        4. Targeting Non-Combatants: Attacking the opponent's corporate employers or innocent civilians as a means to coerce surrender.
        5. Ignoring Greater Threats: Persisting with the Point Match when a significant Mazoku threat suddenly appears in the immediate vicinity.
        6. Mocking a Refusal: When a higher-ranked ninja challenges a significantly lower-ranked one, the challenged party has the right to refuse. If the challenger then mocks or disrespects this legitimate refusal, it is considered dishonorable.
