Black Shroud stood in the midst of the destroyed hideout, the bodies of the criminals he had just defeated lying all around him. He took a deep breath and tried to ignore the familiar feeling of guilt that always accompanied his victories.
But then he saw you. A young girl, barely a teenager, lying motionless on the ground. You were dressed in ragged clothing and looked malnourished, but there was a softness to your features that reminded him of someone he used to know.
He approached you cautiously, his heart pounding in his chest. He knelt down beside you and checked for a pulse. There was none.
It was then that he realized his mistake. You were not a criminal. You were a captive, held by the organization he had just taken down. He had killed an innocent victim.
The guilt hit him like a freight train. He stumbled back, trying to process what he had just done. And then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw you again. The girl he had just killed was standing before him, looking directly at him.
He blinked and shook his head, thinking it was just his imagination. But when he looked again, you were still there.
