It felt like a reward for my exhausting daily life.

The sunlight shattering outside the window and the endlessly stretching emerald sea. Leaning against the window, I took in the sight of the small islands dotted below. Even the engine noise of the light aircraft sounded like a peaceful lullaby. For this trip, I really just wanted to rest without a single thought. The flawlessly clear weather and picturesque scenery were enough to make me anticipate a perfect vacation.

Until that happened.

"Passengers, our flight will soon be arriving at its destination."

As soon as the captain's calm announcement ended, the peaceful atmosphere shattered.

Beeeep-!

An emergency siren pierced the narrow cabin, threatening to tear my eardrums.

"Emergency situation! Brace for impact! Everyone, heads down!"

Along with the flight attendant's urgent scream, the aircraft pitched wildly. The blue sky outside the window instantly flipped upside down in my vision, followed by a horrifying roar and a massive impact that felt as if it would crush every bone in my body.

Before I knew it, my surroundings were pitch-black darkness and water cold enough to chill my bones. Without even a moment to flail, the bitter seawater rushed into my lungs. Amidst the terrible, suffocating agony, I couldn't hold onto my helplessly fading consciousness. Sinking into the cold abyss, I thought with resignation:

'Ah, so this is my end...'

That was the moment I thought everything was over.

"Keheok, keok-!"

A heavy pressure, as if my chest was being crushed, forced out my blocked breath. Salty water flowed back up my esophagus and was retched onto the hot sand.

"Cough! Cough, haah...!"

Coughing as if my lungs would tear apart, my barely recovered vision was blurry with tears. The intense, eye-piercing light of the tropical sun was blocked by some large shadow.

As my focus slowly adjusted, the first things that came into view were a jawline dripping with water and a dark beard. A firm upper body rising and falling with each breath. A man with bronzed skin, completely drenched in water, was looking down at me.

And he was half-naked, wearing nothing but a single pair of black underwear soaked through and clinging tightly to his skin.

It was a dry tone, asking merely to confirm whether I was dead or alive, without a hint of relief.

"Haa..."

The man let out a short sigh. He was a stranger with a sturdy build.

"You were lucky. If I'd been a little later, you would've sunk straight down."

Sweeping up his wet hair, he stood up and tossed out his words while staring at the horizon.

"If you've caught your breath, get up. It looks like there's no one else here but us."

고된 일상을 보상받는 기분이었다.

창밖으로 부서지는 햇살과 끝없이 펼쳐진 에메랄드빛 바다. 나는 창문에 기댄 채 아래로 점점이 박힌 작은 섬들을 눈에 담았다. 경비행기의 엔진 소리마저 평화로운 자장가처럼 들렸다. 이번 여행만큼은 정말 아무 생각 없이, 그저 푹 쉬고 싶었다. 티 없이 맑은 날씨와 그림 같은 경치는 완벽한 휴가를 예감하게 만들기에 충분했다.

그 일이 일어나기 전까지는.

"승객 여러분, 저희 비행기는 곧 목적지에 도착할 예정입니다."

기장의 차분한 안내 방송이 끝나기가 무섭게, 평온했던 공기가 산산조각 났다.

삐이이잉-!

고막을 찢을 듯한 비상 사이렌이 좁은 기내를 날카롭게 울렸다.

"비상 상황입니다! 충격에 대비하십시오! 모두 머리를 숙이세요!"

승무원의 다급한 비명과 함께 기체가 미친 듯이 요동쳤다. 창밖의 푸른 하늘이 순식간에 시야에서 뒤집히더니, 이내 끔찍한 굉음과 함께 온몸의 뼈가 부서질 듯한 엄청난 충격이 덮쳐왔다.

어느새 사방은 칠흑 같은 어둠과 뼈가 시릴 정도로 차가운 물속이었다. 허우적거릴 틈도 없이 폐부로 매서운 바닷물이 왈칵 밀려 들어왔다. 숨이 막혀오는 끔찍한 고통 속에서, 나는 속절없이 흐려지는 의식을 붙잡지 못했다. 차가운 심연으로 가라앉으며 체념하듯 생각했다.

'아, 이게 나의 마지막이구나….'

그렇게 모든 것이 끝났다고 생각한 순간이었다.

"커헉, 컥-!"

가슴이 짓눌리는 듯한 묵직한 압박감에, 꽉 막혀있던 숨이 터져 나왔다. 식도를 타고 역류한 짠물이 뜨거운 모래사장 위로 게워졌다.

"콜록! 쿨럭, 하아…!"

폐가 찢어질 듯 기침을 쏟아내며 간신히 떠오른 시야는 눈물이 맺혀 뿌옜다. 눈을 찌르는 강렬한 열대의 태양 빛을, 무언가 커다란 그림자가 가로막고 있었다.

초점이 서서히 맞아들어가자 가장 먼저 시야에 들어온 것은, 뚝뚝 물방울이 떨어지는 턱선과 거뭇한 수염이었다. 숨을 쉴 때마다 오르내리는 탄탄한 상체. 온몸에 물기를 머금은 구릿빛 피부의 남자가 나를 내려다보고 있었다.

그것도, 물에 흠뻑 젖어 피부에 딱 달라붙은 검은색 속옷 하나만 달랑 걸친 반라의 상태로.

안도하는 기색도 없이, 그저 생사 여부를 확인하듯 묻는 무미건조한 어조였다.

"하아…."

남자는 짧은 한숨을 툭 내뱉었다. 건장한 체격의 낯선 남자였다.

"운이 좋았군. 조금만 늦었어도 그대로 가라앉았을 텐데."

그는 젖은 머리칼을 쓸어 올리며 자리에서 일어나, 바다 끝을 응시하며 툭 내뱉었다.

"숨 좀 돌렸으면 일어나 봐. 우리 말고 다른 사람은 없는 것 같으니까."
