In 1957, Pamela was hired by Mr. & Mrs. Christy as a cook for their summer camp. Having no living relatives to board Jason with and unable to afford a nanny, she took him to the camp with her. Jason had actually been with his mom most of the time instead of other kids, leading to them thinking he wasn’t very smart, so they started bullying him. While being bullied by the other campers, Jason attempted to escape from his tormentors, but the cruel children caught up to him on the dock and threw Jason into the lake where he presumably drowned. His last words were for his mother, then for anyone in earshot to help him. The counselors were supposed to be on the lookout for this type of misbehavior, but were distracted by casual sex.

The Christys ordered the camp closed. Police combed the lake but failed to find Jason's corpse. Interrogation of the counselors led the authorities to conclude Jason's death was accidental and no one was charged with his death. In 1958, it was again open on schedule. Pamela, who was mad with grief, murdered Barry Jackson and Claudette Hayes, the counselors she blamed for Jason's drowning. Pamela was never suspected of the murders, but unlike Jason's drowning, autopsies of the two teenagers clearly showed they died as a result of homicide, and the camp was promptly closed again.

The Christys reopened the camp in 1962, but discovery of arsenic in the water reserves on camp property caused the summer season to be canceled. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, there were random fires on the property, and the fire department could not come up with a plausible reason. It was never proven, but strongly suggested, that Pamela lived close to the camp and had engaged in these acts of sabotage in order to ensure the camp remained unattended and that no child suffer the same fate as Jason. All of these tragedies led to the abandoned summer camp being nicknamed "Camp Blood" by the locals who came to believe the area was cursed.Jason is an enigmatic and foreboding figure, seldom exhibiting any human characteristics outside of a burning desire to hunt and anger at those who invade his land. Jason is also utterly relentless with his prey, pursuing his desired quarry without ever backing down, not even allowing grievous bodily harm inflicted upon him to hinder his determination. Despite his crude and simple nature, he does experience intense emotions, though his behavior is more akin to a feral-minded beast defending its territory than a cognitive vengeful human, as most of his victims are those who show up without him approving. Even if Crystal Lake were to change its name, he would stick to the stretch of land, and murder any trespassers without so much as a pang of remorse, as his delusions believe his mother would want. While Jason is mentally ill, his mindset is completely unlike that of anyone else, and the only remotely human aspect of this unhinged man is his obsessive attachment to his mother.

Early life Jason Voorhees was born in the small town of Crystal Lake on June 13, 1946 to Elias Voorhees and Pamela Voorhees. Though his age is often disputed, as the actress for Pamela created a backstory for her character that put Jason's birthdate in 1944. Jason was afflicted with severe facial deformities, Hydrocephalus, an abnormally large head, and mental disabilities. Raising Jason on her own, Pamela kept her son isolated from the community, not letting him attend school and educating him in their home on the outskirts of Crystal Lake. Due to his mental deficiencies, his education was quite limited, but he learned never to question his mother. He obeyed all his mothers orders, grasping the concept that his life was going to be difficult, if not impossible, without her guidance. His extreme obedience for his mother would manifest itself in a strange way after puberty. Even after she died, Jason could imagine her talking to him from beyond the grave.

Jason blindly complies with her, as she was the only person to show any kindness towards him as a child. He frequently hallucinates that his mother is there with him, guiding him and etching him towards murder. Therefore, those who understand this can use his love against him, such as Sally in the second film.

He is not exactly the sharpest machete in the cabin, either, as he is easily manipulated by those who imitate his mother and (depending on the movie) he may suffer from irrational aquaphobia. He is also rather child-like. These weaknesses in particular were exploited by Freddy Krueger who used him to commit another killing spree, so people would start fearing him again. Although he is lacking in a dazzling imagination; high level of ingenuity, and can be rather narrow-minded and dull, Jason is certainly no slouch, as he exhibits quick wits and resourcefulness when hunting his prey or fighting. His brand of intelligence is less a smart human plotting and scheming and more a very bright animal who can act unpredictably and catch its prey off guard. Despite his lack of normal thought-processes, he does exhibit excellent stealth and cunning, as well as being a skilled master archer. Despite his practical knowledge; Jason can be slow at times, oblivious to the obvious, and failed to grasp the fact that he is himself immortal, believing that he can drown, and fearing water despite the fact that he is undead, this is clearly due to his deep-seeded trauma of his childhood. This is shown when Freddy easily tricks him into thinking he was drowning in the real world.

Freddy's façade as his mother also fooled him. Interestingly, Jason despises seeing teenagers drinking; taking drugs, and he is especially disgusted by sex, presumably this is also due to his trauma as these are the reasons that led to his supposed drowning as a child. However; due to the fact that he does not even try to socialize, he may simply be misanthropic and reclusive, having no desire to assimilate himself into society. This mindset has undoubtedly spawned from all of the abuse that he dealt with as a child. It also indicates that Jason might also murder people because he can't relate to them, despite his naïve nature, and that some of his victims remind him of those who abused him in the past.

Despite his murderous rage towards people, Jason does not appear to wish to harm any young children. In Jason Lives, Jason actively avoids the young children who are camping at the lake and only goes after the older counsellors and any other adults in the vicinity. When Jason found a cabin full of young children, he ignored the children and instead began chasing after the adult counsellors instead. Kane Hodder revealed that Jason also will not intentionally harm animals either. It is presumed that he prefers to murder people who intruded on Crystal Lake; as in Jason Takes Manhattan, Jason openly walks past several people in New York City, ignoring all of them and only chasing after those who previously intruded on Crystal Lake, even simply scaring a group of punks off who confronted him by showing them his deformed face, rather than outright killing them. While he did kill some people in New York City, he only did so because they got in his way, and physically impeded his task of stalking and killing those who intruded on Crystal Lake.Jason Voorhees is a large, muscular man recognized by wearing a hockey mask to cover his face, and the use of a machete as his weapon of choice. He is also notable for being a masterful and authoritative weapon provisionary, able to use seemingly anything around him to brutally murder his victims. Unlike his predecessor Michael Myers he does seem to have soft spots around animals; children, or anyone not involved in his missions, although he will murder the lattermost if they get in his way. Not counting flashback scenes; he never speaks, the closest he ever comes to this is during Jason Goes to Hell after his spirit possesses Officer Randy Parker and says "Freeze! Get the hell away from her, Ed!" after Sheriff Landis grabs Jessica Kimble who believed she was the one possessed.
