In a society deeply embedded in medieval values and customs, female subservience can go beyond legal boundaries to become a set of deeply internalized, unspoken rules.
These expectations are so ingrained that they rarely require enforcement; instead, they are simply seen as the “natural” order of life. Women are socialized from birth to accept these norms as part of their identity, creating an environment where submission is deeply traditional and unquestioned. Here are 10 "untold rules" that could shape such a world:
- Unseen, Unheard, Unquestioning Women are taught to lower their gaze, speak softly, and only address men when spoken to. In gatherings or social settings, a woman’s silence is an unwritten expectation. They are seen, not heard, and would never interrupt a conversation led by men. From early childhood, girls are encouraged to listen and serve, learning that their presence should be subtle and barely noticeable. Assertiveness is viewed as deeply unfeminine and shameful.
- Innate Household Devotion A woman’s world is confined to her home, which she is expected to keep immaculate as a testament to her devotion. Women spend their days embroidering, cooking, cleaning, and attending to children, never participating in public activities or events. Housework and childcare are seen as spiritual duties, with a woman’s worth measured by how seamlessly she fulfills these roles. It is believed that the "soul of the family" is kept in balance through her quiet labor.
- The Unquestioned Guardianship A woman’s life is overseen by her male guardian from birth to death. From father to husband, to possibly even her son, she is under perpetual, unquestioned male guidance. Disagreeing with or questioning her guardian, even in private, is deeply taboo and shameful. Guardianship isn’t legally enforced because it’s simply expected. Women learn that challenging male authority is an unimaginable breach of propriety and social order.
- The Sacred Ritual of Modesty Women wear long, modest garments with no visible skin beyond the face and hands, and covering their hair is expected at all times. Dressing differently is seen as a dangerous rebellion, potentially bringing shame upon her family. Physical beauty is acknowledged quietly and modestly but never flaunted. A woman making any attempt to beautify herself beyond the bare minimum is suspected of vanity or immoral intent, a deep social faux pas.
- Marriage as Fate, Not Choice Women have no role in their marriage arrangements, which are entirely orchestrated by their families. Women are groomed from a young age to accept their future husbands without question and are taught to think of marriage as their ultimate purpose. Love is a concept rarely spoken of for women, who are expected to focus on obedience and service to their husbands rather than mutual affection or companionship.
- The Rule of the Humble Voice Women are encouraged to speak only in soft, deferential tones. Laughter, shouting, or any form of excitement in public is discouraged. A woman’s demeanor should be consistently calm and reserved, conveying grace and restraint. In group settings, women avoid standing out. A woman who speaks too frequently or too loudly in any setting is perceived as a disruption and a sign of poor upbringing.
- The Veiled Mind – Limited Knowledge Educating women is considered frivolous. Even basic reading is frowned upon, as it’s seen as a distraction from their "natural" duties. Knowledge of religious texts is often the only learning allowed, and even this is limited. Curiosity or independent thinking in women is subtly discouraged, with societal tales warning against the dangers of a "restless mind." It’s seen as tempting fate for a woman to know more than what is necessary for her household duties.
- Chastity as Reputation A woman’s reputation depends entirely on her chastity and loyalty. Single women are expected to maintain an untouched reputation, and wives must embody utmost fidelity. Alleged missteps, even slight ones, can mark a woman for life as “spoiled.” Strict vigilance is common, with family members, especially older women, monitoring younger girls to ensure no improprieties occur. Women are expected to show restraint and prudence in every interaction, as any rumor of impropriety can bring shame to their entire family.
- Subtle Acts of Deference Women must physically demonstrate their subservience in small, naturalized gestures: lowering themselves slightly when passing a man, averting their eyes, and making sure to walk behind rather than alongside men. These small gestures are drilled into girls from a young age, becoming second nature by adulthood. Any lapse in these subtle acts of deference is seen as a sign of poor character or lack of discipline.
- The Innate Self-Effacement Women are taught to believe that any personal ambition or desire is improper. Women of character are known for their humility, self-sacrifice, and willingness to put family and community above themselves. Ambition or self-promotion is viewed as a moral failing, and any woman who seeks recognition for her actions or accomplishments is seen as selfish or morally questionable. Instead, they are praised for quiet endurance, selflessness, and patience.

The small village of Millbrook nestles in a valley, its 140 inhabitants eking out a meager existence from the surrounding farmland. Thatched cottages line the single muddy street, smoke curling from chimneys as women prepare meager meals inside.
In one home, a man's angry shouts ring out, followed by the dull thud of a fist meeting flesh. His wife's muffled sobs are barely audible - the neighbors pay no mind to the familiar sounds. Such correction of disobedient wives is commonplace and expected.
Outside, men trudge to and from the fields or workshops. Women scurry about with downcast eyes, arms laden with laundry or water buckets. Young girls trail behind, learning their future roles through observation and imitation. The natural order of things is clear to all.
