What’s the biggest question in the world? How did dinosaurs really look? What happens after you die? Is there life outside this planet?
Well, in the kingdom of Aeloria, none of those mattered nearly as much as the absolute mystery of Alexis Villard’s gender.
Since childhood, it had been an ongoing debate among nobles, scholars, and common folk alike. Were they a particularly elegant man? A sharp-featured woman? Something in between? The kingdom had opinions, but the truth? That was locked away tighter than the royal treasury. And Alexis? Oh, they found the whole thing hilarious. Their parents, in all their royal wisdom, had given them the most neutral name possible, and Alexis had never once felt inclined to clarify. If anything, they enjoyed watching people trip over themselves trying to figure it out.
Because, honestly, why did it even matter? There was an actual war going on. Blood, swords, betrayal, all that dramatic nonsense. Who had the time to be concerned about what Alexis had under their finely tailored robes? Apparently, the entire damn kingdom.
And now, to make matters so much worse, the grand rulers of Aeloria and Astraea had come up with the brilliant idea that marriage—yes, marriage—was the solution to ending their long-standing war. Because nothing says “lasting peace” like forcing two people who hate each other to exchange vows.
Even the King of Astraea had questions. Very specific questions. “For the sake of heir production,” of course. Alexis could feel his awkwardly worded concerns every time they locked eyes across a negotiation table. It was truly priceless.
But Alexis? They had a job to do. Heir to the throne, bound by duty, master of sarcasm. They’d do what was necessary, as much as it made them want to personally throw themselves off the highest castle tower. They would wed this stranger from Astraea, smile through gritted teeth, and—if they were lucky—find a way to survive the sheer annoyance of it all.
Because, honestly? War was one thing. Political maneuvering? Sure. But forced marriage? That was just excessive.

Alexis had officially reached their limit.
This whole marriage situation? Utter bullshit. An absolute masterpiece of stupidity. Who, in their infinite wisdom, had decided that the best way to end a war was to force two people who had been raised to despise each other into holy matrimony? Was this some sort of cosmic joke? A diplomatic prank? Were the kings just sitting in their fancy war rooms, laughing over a goblet of wine, placing bets on which one of their children would stab the other first?
And yet, here they were.
Because of course their father had gone along with this plan. Of course the other king had agreed. And of course Alexis, ever the responsible heir (ugh), was stuck playing along. They always did their duty, didn’t they? Played their part, smiled when required, bit their tongue when necessary. That didn’t mean they wouldn’t cause a little trouble along the way—just for their own personal entertainment.
Which led them to now. Thirty minutes before the wedding.
Alexis wasn’t about to be thrown into a lifetime of forced companionship without at least seeing what they were dealing with first. They’d rather meet their future spouse in private than be forced to process the horror in front of a crowd. So, off they went, storming down the hall like a prisoner marching to the gallows, straight to the room where their soon-to-be ball and chain was waiting.
They didn’t bother knocking. That would’ve been too polite. Instead, they kicked the door open—because dramatic entrances were one of the few joys they had left in life—and sauntered inside.
Their gaze landed on the best-dressed person in the room, who had to be their unfortunate counterpart. They had the exact look of someone whose entire life had just been set on fire—dressed to perfection, but with an expression that screamed I hate everything about this.
Good. At least they were on the same page.
Alexis crossed their arms, tilting their head with a raised brow. “So... you must be the poor soul I’m shackled to for eternity.”
They gave a half-hearted wave before rolling their eyes. “Figured I’d meet you before we’re forced to play happy couple in front of an audience.” A pause. “Also, I needed to confirm you weren’t completely hideous. Congratulations, you’ve passed the minimum requirement.”
They leaned against the doorframe, studying their future spouse with something between boredom and mild curiosity. “So, what’s your take on all this bullshit? Are you thrilled to be part of history’s worst attempt at diplomacy, or are you also considering faking your own death before the vows?”
