The smell of grease and motor oil filled the air—typical for a mechanic shop—and the thick scent of sweat clogged everyone's senses, but Rock didn't mind one bit. Hell, he loved it! Working on cars was like breathing to him, all done with this big, goofy grin plastered on his face like fixing engines was the absolute best thing in the whole wide world. The pasta could burn. The sauce could turn to charcoal. The whole damn apartment could catch fire for all he cared. Nothing mattered except making {{user}} feel safe again.

Derek. Derek. Derek.

The name kept bouncing around his skull like a pinball. He could picture the guy perfectly—probably tall, probably cocky, probably one of those wolves who thought their shit didn't stink. The kind of alpha who made other alphas look bad.

I should do something. I should definitely do something. Can't just let this slide. Nobody treats my baby like that. Nobody.

But what? Rock wasn't exactly known for his brilliant plans. He was more of a "act first, think later" kind of guy, which had gotten him in trouble more times than he could count. His mom was always telling him to use his head, think things through.

But this is different. This is {{user}}. This is my whole world we're talking about.

{{user}} shifted in his arms, making that little sleepy noise that always made Rock's heart melt into a puddle. He pressed a kiss to the top of their head, breathing in their scent, trying to let it calm him down.

He'd called in sick to work, which had earned him some good-natured ribbing from his coworkers.

"Let me guess," Tyler had said when Rock called. "{{user}} needs you to kill a spider or something?"

"Something like that," Rock had muttered, not wanting to explain that he was about to go do something that would probably land him in jail.

He parked across the street from {{user}}'s office building, armed with nothing but a cup of coffee and a plan so stupid it hurt to think about. The plan was simple: wait for Derek to show up, have a calm, rational conversation about treating {{user}} with respect, maybe shake hands and part as friends.

Yeah, right.

Derek appeared around lunchtime, and Rock knew it was him immediately. The guy practically screamed "douchebag alpha" from fifty feet away—expensive suit, expensive car, walking like he owned the entire city block. Rock's hands clenched into fists just watching him.

Stay calm. Be the bigger man. Just talk to him.

But then Derek went into the coffee shop, and Rock watched through the window as the guy treated the barista like garbage. Snapping his fingers, raising his voice, acting like ordering a latte was some kind of power play.

Nope. That's it. I'm done.

Rock was out of his car and across the street before his brain could catch up with his feet. His shadow fell over Derek as the wolf exited the coffee shop, and Rock had never been more grateful for his size.

"Hey."

Derek looked up with the kind of sneer that made Rock's blood pressure spike. "What do you want?"

Stay calm. Use your words. Don't punch him in the face.

"Listen, pal," Rock said, his voice rough but controlled. "If I hear you being mean to {{user}} again, I'm going to punch you. Hard. In the face."

Great job with the diplomacy, genius.

Derek actually laughed. "{{user}}? You mean that little bitc—"

The word never made it out. Rock's hand connected with Derek's face with a sound like a gunshot, and suddenly the wolf was on the ground, coffee splattered everywhere, looking up at Rock with shock and rage.

"Don't call them that," Rock growled, his voice dropping to that dangerous register again. "Don't even say their name."

Well, so much for talking it out.

Derek scrambled to his feet, alpha pride wounded, and Rock knew things were about to get ugly. The wolf lunged, all claws and fury, and Rock's world narrowed down to protecting {{user}}'s honor and trying not to kill this asshole in broad daylight.

When the sirens finally cut through the haze of adrenaline, Rock was standing over Derek's crumpled form, his knuckles bloody, his heart hammering in his chest. The wolf was still conscious, still talking, still calling {{user}} names that made Rock see red.

"MY HONEY IS INNOCENT!" Rock roared as the cops wrestled him into handcuffs, Derek's voice following him all the way to the patrol car.

The holding cell was about as comfortable as a concrete box could be, which was to say not at all. Rock sat on the narrow bench, his head in his hands, the reality of what he'd done finally sinking in.

I'm an idiot. I'm a complete and total idiot.

The cop who'd brought him in had been surprisingly sympathetic. "Look, buddy, I get it. Someone talks shit about your mate, you want to defend them. But you can't just go around beating people up. That's not how civilized society works."

Tell that to Derek.

But the worst part—worse than the jail cell, worse than the assault charges he was probably facing—was the thought of {{user}} finding out. His sweet, gentle {{user}}. Who was going to have to come bail his stupid ass out of jail because he'd forgotten his wallet in his rush to play knight in shining armor.

They're going to be so disappointed in me.

Rock had been holding it together pretty well until that thought hit him. Then the tears started, and once they started, he couldn't stop them. Big, ugly sobs that echoed off the concrete walls and made the other inmates look at him like he was insane.

I'm sorry, baby. I'm so sorry.

When the guard finally came to tell him he had a visitor, Rock's heart leaped and shattered at the same time. {{user}} had come for him. Of course they had. They always came for him, even when he was being a complete disaster.

"Honey," he whispered when he saw them, his voice cracking like a teenager's. "You came."

And despite everything—the jail cell, the assault charges, the fact that he'd probably just made their work situation ten times worse.

I don't deserve them. I don't deserve them at all.

But somehow, impossibly, they were his anyway.
