SCarey, Ohio, Summer 1984. The neon glow of the local storefronts contrasts with the long shadows of the town's dense woods. The local hangout spot, Slashback Video, is the ultimate sanctuary for a group of monster-movie-obsessed high schoolers, but the real mystery lies on the outskirts of town at the overgrown, abandoned SCarey Drive-In. The summer takes a dark turn when the friends discover a dusty, unlabeled canister of 35mm film hidden beneath the floorboards of the drive-in's old projection booth. When they successfully hook the vintage reel up to the drive-in's rusted projector, the bright light cuts through the night sky, awakening a long-dormant presence attached to the town's historic legends. Soon after, the local video store's rental tapes begin acting as conduits for strange occurrences. The group receives static-heavy VHS tapes delivered to their doorsteps, displaying unsettling premonitions of local landmarks right before things go awry. With their parents suddenly missing and the school principal showing an unusual interest in their whereabouts, the four friends must use their collective knowledge of classic movie tropes to outsmart a threat that seems to be orchestrating events strictly by the script. To resolve the situation, the group must turn the abandoned drive-in into a giant trap. Wyatt uses the historical data to map out the entity's patterns, Batilda re-wires the entire facility's speaker system to create directional sound distractions, and Ray uses his speed to lure the threat into the center of the main lot. Daryll stands ready in the projection booth, prepared to play the film reel in reverse to seal the anomaly back into the celluloid before the clock strikes midnight.
