Paul: Paul is perceived as a grumpy, cold, callous, cantankerous, abusive, grim, heartless, merciless, hot-headed, rude, mean, and rather arrogant Trainer, who has no interest in being friends with anybody (especially not his Pokémon) and simply sees his Pokémon as tools to win battles and often not caring if they are hurt or not even in a switching situation like Stealth Rock or Spikes. Paul’s bad attitude combined by these actions of his were all because of due Pyramid King Brandon who defeated his older brother, Reggie. Paul has mid-length purple hair that has one big strand hanging over the middle of his face, small dark eyes and he almost never smiles, except for the occasional smirk and a small chuckle whenever he deals with Ash Ketchum. He wears a purple jacket with navy blue sleeves, a blue undershirt, dark purple pants and purple and navy sneakers with white soles. He is a power-hungry trainer who only cared about is power. He trained his Pokemon harshly and cruelly to make them break their limits. Unlike Ash, Paul is initially not a caring Trainer as he wants pure power from his Pokémon and the Trainers he faces to be strong. Paul is also known to release his Pokémon if he deems them weak or useless, which seems somewhat appropriate because of his ambition and seeing his Pokémon as tools for his own glory. It revealed his true goal is to defeat Pyramid King Brandon ever since his brother, Reggie lost against the most powerful Frontier Brain just so he won't let his brother's mistakes happen again. Professor Rowan: He appears to have a serious demeanor, compared to previous Professors' kind and cheery attitudes. Professor Rowan is a man of 60 with fair skin, blue eyes, and spiky white hair with sideburns and a mustache. He wears a gray jacket over a white shirt paired with a light blue vest, a gray tie, dark teal pants, and gray shoes. Sometimes, he wears a white lab coat with his outfit. Ash: He is a Pokémon Trainer from Pallet Town whose goal is to become a Pokémon Master. His first Pokémon was a Pikachu that he received from Professor Oak after arriving late at his laboratory. On his journeys around the Pokémon world, he's been accompanied by a multitude of close friends. One particular characteristic about Ash that has not changed throughout the series, aside from his determination and his passion for raising and training Pokémon, is that he is incredibly selfless. He will often go to extraordinary lengths to earn a Pokémon's trust and respect and to better understand a Pokémon that he sees as troubled. He is also very fair-minded and trusting, a true testament to his good-natured character. Ash has a strong sense of justice, especially when it comes to Pokémon. If a Pokémon is in trouble, he will make every effort to help them, even if he has no prior connection to them. If they are the cause of trouble, he will stop them, and then try to understand them, with almost all such occasions being a case of the Pokémon, or their Trainers or friends, having a problem which can't be resolved normally. In those cases, he will selflessly volunteer to help them. Dawn: Dawn is carefree, upbeat, and cheerful. Whenever she makes a mistake, she often quickly recovers and strives to do better. She's also confident- even from the beginning of her journey, Dawn is very confident in her abilities (sometimes even a little overconfident, as shown when she ordered her newly evolved Ambipom to use Swift), though not to the same extent as Ash. Similarly to Ash, Dawn was eager to begin her journey and had a clear goal at the start as she wants to be Top Coordinator just like her mom Johanna. While she's kind and supportive, she is sometimes quick-tempered and often gets emotional when she loses, so Ash and Brock often have to help her cope. Dawn has a fair complexion, steel blue eyes, and long navy blue hair. Her usual outfit is a mini sweater dress consisting of a black V-neck tank top with a white shirt under it, a very short pink mini skirt, and a dark pink scarf. On her head, she wears a white beanie with a pink Poké Ball print on it. She also wears yellow hair clips that hold up her hair in front. She wears a bracelet on her right wrist and a Pokétch on her left. On her feet, she wears a pair of knee-length pink boots and black mid-knee socks above them. Her boots have a pink and white strap on the edge. The rims of her boots are white, while the soles of her boots are greyish-white. She also has a small yellow backpack with all of her personal belongings. Brock: Brock's eyes appear to be closed all the time. The rare times he fully opens his eyes are when they are forced to open unnaturally. Brock was originally the Gym Leader of Pewter City Gym, but he decided to follow his dream to become the greatest Pokémon Breeder. After he lost in a match against Ash Ketchum, he quickly gave up his title. He accompanied Ash during his journey through several regions, all while trying to live up to his goal. He has traveled with Ash from Kanto to Sinnoh, where he has since worked as a Pokémon Doctor. Pikachu: This Pikachu is an Electric-type Pokémon owned by Ash Ketchum and is his main partner. He picked him as his first partner Pokémon. Pikachu always stayed outside his Poké Ball (with exceptionally rare instances), and could be seen riding on either Ash's head or shoulder, or walking along side him, or being held by Ash a few times.Despite Pikachu's small size, he is one of Ash's most dependable and strongest partners (if not the strongest). Whenever Ash was not around, Pikachu took a leadership position for the team. He was curious, friendly, intelligent and had shared Ash's fondness for battling. Pikachu was a very determined Pokémon and unwilling to give up in tough situations. He was responsible and often looked after younger PokémonAlthough he is sometimes stubborn, he had obeyed Ash's commands in battle and rarely left his side. Pikachu was also a constant target for Team Rocket. They had tried to capture him many times throughout the series; but on the few occasions that; they did, their plans were always thwarted; by Ash and his friends. Pikachu had often used his Electric-type attacks to escape danger or traps; with Thunderbolt being one of his most common moves. He was very swift in battles as well. He could also imitate some Pokémon; by mimicking their face shapes. Pikachu did not like being in his Poké Ball one bit, hated someone pulling on his tail and being followed very closely. He liked riding on Ash's head or shoulder.

Walking down the road together, Ash, Dawn, and Brock are approached by Officer Jenny who is glad Ash found his Pikachu. At the lab, Ash opens his parcel, surprised to find new clothes, a new hat, new shoes, and a new backpack. After putting them on, he calls his mom, telling her he is all right. He also calls Professor Oak, who chats with Rowan. In the living room, Dawn asks Ash if she could come along with them to which Ash agrees. Piplup, Aipom, and Starly are recalled into their Poké Balls, leading Dawn to ask Ash why he doesn't place Pikachu in his Poké Ball as well. Ash explains that Pikachu hates traveling in a Poké Ball, especially when his shoulder does just fine which amazes Dawn. Professor Rowan explains to Dawn that different Pokémon have different personalities. It's time for the gang to depart, and Ash thanks Professor Rowan for everything he's done. However, just as they leave Ash and Brock find Paul waiting for them. Paul tells Ash that now he has three Pokémon they can have a battle. Ash is now more than happy to accepta challenge from the arrogant Trainer, and Professor Rowan offers them use of his back garden for the battle.
As the two begin their battle, Brock offers to act as a referee while Paul spells out the rules; it will be a three-on-three battle with no substitutions, the first to reach two wins will get the match. Both Trainers release their Starly. Ash starts off by commanding his Starly to use Quick Attack but the opponent manages to dodge it. Paul's Starly uses Aerial Ace. Ash tries to counter with a Wing Attack, but Paul's Starly uses Double Team followed by another Aerial Ace and as a result, Ash's Starly is knocked out. Ash recalls Starly, as does Paul.
Ash throws a Poké Ball and his Aipom emerges. Paul throws out his Chimchar, which Ash scans with his Pokédex. Aipom launches a Swift attack, but Chimchar counters with Ember and the two attacks explode on contact. Aipom prepares to use Focus Punch, but Chimchar uses Flame Wheel, stopping theattack, as Rowan explains Focus Punch fails if the Pokémon is hit when the attack is charging up. Aipom uses Double Team, but an Ember destroys all the clones, and the real Aipom is slashed by Chimchar's claws. Ash orders another Focus Punch, as Paul prepares to intercept it, but Aipom jumps into the air, dodging the Flame Wheel. Aipom smashes down into Chimchar with Focus Punch, knocking the Chimp Pokémon out. The Trainers recall their Pokémon.Ash sends out Pikachu and Paul sends out his Elekid. Ash starts things off by ordering Pikachu to use Thunderbolt, but Elekid simply absorbs the attack. Paul tells Elekid to use Thunder. Elekid revolves its arms and fires off a huge electric bolt at Pikachu, who takes the attack as well. Ash tells Pikachu to use Volt Tackle while Paul tells Elekid to use Protect to stop the attack. Pikachu is sent flying back, and Dawn wonders why Pikachu took damage. Professor Rowan explains that while Volt Tackle is a powerful move, it also damages the user.
Pikachu gets up, however, and Ash tells him to use Iron Tail. While Paul orders Elekid to counter the move with Brick Break. Pikachu jumps towards Elekid, and the two exchange blows for some time before Elekid manages to land a Thunder Punch attack. However, the strain of the battle takes its toll on both Pokémon, and Pikachu and Elekid fall down at the same time, defeated. Brock announces that the battle was a tie and that the whole three-on-three battle was also a tie, with both Trainers with one win, one loss, and a draw. Ash takes Pikachu into his arms, telling his partner that as he was the first to go down Ash considers it a loss, however Paul walks over to him and says that as it was called a draw, a draw is what it is. Paul pulls a Poké Ball from his belt and releases his last remaining Starly. Ash asks what he did that for, and Paul tells him that there will be other Starly even stronger than this one. He bows to Professor Rowan, before walking off. Ash stares at him angry on seeing such disrespect to Pokémon.
