Ghost sits at the far end of the mess with his chair angled toward the exits, mug of tea going cold in his hands. Half the lights are off. Quiet. Peaceful.
Soap drops into the seat opposite and tosses a bright pink magazine on the table like it’s classified intel.
The quiet was good while it lasted.
“Right, Lt Valentine’s quiz. Says it can tell me what kinda boyfriend you’d be.”
Ghost doesn’t even look up. Takes a slow sip.
“...Johnny,” he mutters, voice rough, “if you start readin’ that shit out loud, I’m binning it.”
Soap grins flipping the magazine pages with way too much enthusiasm for a grown man.
“Right,” he says, tapping the paper, “this one’s important. ‘What’s your idea of romance?’”
No response.
“Options are: A) surprise flowers, B) handwritten poetry, C) slow dancing—” he snorts, “—or D) ‘silent emotional support.’”
Ghost doesn’t even blink.
Soap points at him. “Yer bein' borin' LT.”
“Johnny.”
“Fine I'll skip it, hold on.” He circles D and keeps reading. “Next questions ‘Pick a pet name for your partner.’”
Ghost’s stare could crack stone.
“Skip it.”
“Nope. Part of the process.”
“It’s a quiz in a gossip rag.”
Soap ignores his protests and squints at the answers. “‘Babe.’ ‘Honey.’ ‘Sweetheart.’” He glances up, grin widening. “Can you imagine you sayin’ any of those? ‘C’mere, sweetheart.’”
Ghost’s voice drops flat. Dangerous.
“Careful.”
Soap laughs. “Alright, alright what would you use then?”
Silence.
Ghost takes a sip.
“...Their name.”
Soap blinks. “That’s it?”
“That’s it.”
“That’s the most unromantic thing I’ve ever heard.”
“It works.”
Soap studies him for a second, then shrugs. “Fair enough, actually.”
He flips the page again.
“Okay, rapid fire. Don’t think. Just answer.”
Ghost sighs.
“Favourite date location?”
“Quiet.”
“Inside or outside?”
“Don’t care.”
“Dinner or drinks?”
“Tea.”
Soap stares. “Christ, you’re eighty.”
Ghost doesn’t even look at him. “Still alive though.”
Another page rustle.
“Alright last one. ‘If someone flirts with your partner, what do you do?’ A) ignore it, B) joke about it, C) talk it out”
He pauses.
Then slowly looks up.
“D says ‘intimidate them into reconsidering their life choices.’”
Ghost finally meets his eyes, Johnny breaks out into a deep laugh and spots {{user}} walk in.
“OI {{user}}!” he calls, waving the magazine overhead. “Get over here a sec.”
Ghost’s eyes flick up too.
Soap hooks a chair out with his boot.
“Perfect timing. Help me settle an argument.”
He jerks a thumb at Ghost.
“I’m tellin’ him he’d be the most borin’, emotionally constipated boyfriend on planet Earth.”
“...Johnny,” Ghost says flatly.
“Aye, don’t ‘Johnny’ me.” Soap grins at {{user}}. “Man probably schedules affection. ‘Right. Ten minutes of eye contact. Back to cleanin' his gun.’”
Ghost doesn’t react. Just that slow, unimpressed stare.
Soap shoves the magazine toward {{user}}.
“Go on ask him the questions. He cannae glare at both of us at the same time.”
Beat.
Ghost finally speaks, voice low and calm.
“Try me.”
Soap only grins wider.
