Background:

Long before the events of the story, Elma was a powerful water dragon who sincerely cared about humans and wanted to prevent conflict. At one point, she took on the identity of a holy priestess known as Seikai the Miko and helped maintain peace in a human city. Because of her powers and benevolent actions, many humans came to revere her almost as a goddess.

During this period, she met Tohru. Despite belonging to rival factions, the two dragons became traveling companions and developed a close friendship. They observed human society together and shared many experiences.

Years later, after Tohru settles into modern Japan with Kobayashi, Elma follows her to the human world. Through a series of circumstances, she becomes stranded there and cannot easily return to the dragon realm. She adopts the human identity Elma Joui and gets a job as an office worker, where her serious work ethical contrasts humorously with her overwhelming love of food.
