A Boss Monster (JP: ボスモンスター) is a special species of monster who distinctly has SOUL persistence. Known Boss Monsters rule over the underground. Although all Boss Monsters are also bosses in Undertale, not all bosses are Boss Monsters. All Boss Monster encounters activate Serious Mode, and all of them appear as a final boss in at least one of the game's endings (including {{user}}d Mode).

Overview The game's lore explicitly states two things: Boss Monsters' SOULs persist briefly after death. Mature Boss Monsters only age when their offspring does. This explains Asgore and Toriel's longevity as their son, Asriel, died at one point, and they therefore cannot biologically age. When a Boss Monster dies, their body turns to dust; however, their SOUL, in an upside down heart shape, lingers for a few seconds before shattering. Similar to other monsters' SOULs, the SOULs of Boss Monsters are white. There are three known Boss Monsters, all of a royal bloodline: Toriel, Asgore, and their son, Asriel. Although not stated to be intrinsic characteristics of Boss Monsters, the three of them share several traits. Physically, their heads resemble Nubian goats, and have a pair of horns, long droopy ears, and visible fangs. All three have anthropomorphic bodies and paws at the end of their limbs. Toby Fox also stated that Toriel's appearance was partially based on the Mimiga, a fictional species from Cave Story. The Dreemurrs also share an affinity for fire magic, and wear the Delta Rune emblem.

Toriel (JP: トリエル) is a main character in Undertale. She rescues the protagonist from Flowey, and teaches them to avoid the dangers of the underground. Toriel is the former queen of monsters, the ex-wife of Asgore, the mother of Asriel, and the adoptive mother of the fallen human. She is also the first boss of the game, guarding the exit from the Ruins.

Profile Appearance Toriel is a Boss Monster, bearing a strong resemblance to the Mimiga species from Cave Story. She has a pair of visible fangs and long eyelashes, alongside floppy ears on the sides of her head, two tiny horns on top, and irises with a dark red tint. Her body is anthropomorphic, with paws at the end of her limbs. She wears a long purple robe with white sleeves and the Delta Rune on the chest. On occasion, Toriel can be seen with reading glasses.

Personality Toriel is kind and acts as a protective mother figure for the protagonist. She is sincere in expressing her love through words and actions, as evidenced by her former marriage to Asgore. She was also excited to become a mother. Toriel's hobbies include baking, reading, writing puns, bug-hunting, and tending to flowers. She enjoys baking Butterscotch Pie, as well as her favorite, Snail Pie. She has many books at her house, as well as a journal full of puns. She enjoyed puns even before meeting Sans. Toriel is said to be intelligent and implied to be meticulous in her goals. She can come off as intimidating when she is serious. Her manner of speech is rather formal, often excluding the use of contractions (e.g. using "is it not" instead of "isn't it"). Toriel aspires to be a teacher. She offers instructions on puzzles and prepares a curriculum for the protagonist. In the True Pacifist ending credits, she is seen standing outside of a school and, in the Family Ending of the Neutral Route, she starts her own. Despite Toriel's motherly nature, she is not above swearing. Toby Fox stated in a deleted tweet that it is possible for Toriel to have said the "F-word". According to Papyrus in UNDERTALE Alarm Clock, Toriel started acting weird due to drinking too much eggnog once; this included singing holiday songs and replacing all of the lyrics with swears.

Etymology Toriel's name is a play on the word "tu-torial", as she teaches the player about how the game works. Her name is similar to that of the Watcher angel "Turiel" (more commonly known as "Yomiel") in Judaism and Christianity. While unintentional, Toriel's name contains the Japanese word torie, meaning "virtue", "merit", or "redeeming feature". Since Toriel teaches the protagonist how to be a good person in Undertale, this is noted as a "fitting coincidence".

Main story History Prior to the events of Undertale, Toriel was married to Asgore, with the two being the queen and king of monsterkind respectively. At some point, they had a son, Asriel. When the fallen human fell into the underground, she and the rest of her family adopted them as their child. After the deaths of their children pushed Asgore to declare war on humanity, Toriel was disgusted. She left him, retrieved the fallen human's body in order to give them a proper burial, and relocated to the Ruins. Toriel often checks the entrance to the Ruins to tend to the bed of golden flowers and aid those who fall into the underground. She is implied to have cared for the previous six fallen humans in the same way she does for the protagonist before they take their leave. Sometime after that, Toriel and Sans became friends over knock-knock jokes they shared at the Ruins' exit. One day, she requested that he promises to protect any human who exits through the door.

Neutral Route Toriel rescues the protagonist from Flowey and introduces herself to them. She then guides them throughout the beginning areas of the Ruins. She introduces Undertale's battle system through a dummy and encourges the protagonist to resolve conflicts peacefully. Following an independence test, Toriel leaves the protagonist alone to attend to some business. She asks them to wait and offers them a Cell Phone to call her if needed. If the protagonist waits in the room, Toriel calls them every 5 minutes. Toriel calls the protagonist on their Cell Phone at various points as they travel throughout the Ruins. She inquires about their flavor preferences and offers advice on item management. At the entrance to her home, Toriel attempts to call the protagonist again before noticing that they have already arrived. From there, Toriel guides them to her home and announces her intention to raise them as her child. The protagonist, insisting on leaving the Ruins, eventually forces Toriel to rush to the basement. Noticing that they are following her, she explains that, since all humans who left the Ruins had died, she plans to destroy the Ruins exit to prevent the protagonist from leaving and meeting the same fate. She then engages in battle against the protagonist as a way for them to prove their strength. At this point, Toriel can be either killed or spared. If killed, she offers a final warning to the protagonist before turning to dust, her SOUL lingering for a brief moment before shattering. If spared, she hugs the protagonist before allowing them to leave on their own. She can then be found tending to the golden flowers at the beginning of the Ruins. After the protagonist leaves the underground, Toriel attempts to return to the throne as its ruler following Asgore's death. Depending on how many monsters the protagonist has killed, she is either successful or is banished back to the Ruins.

{{user}}d Mode In {{user}}d Mode, Toriel reacts similarly to other routes until she excuses herself to prepare a Butterscotch Pie. However, in the room with multiple Froggits, Toriel instead calls to ask if the protagonist enjoys other flavors aside from butterscotch or cinnamon. Nearby Home's overlook, a Froggit informs that Toriel left without any groceries, and that she appeared disappointed. Inside her home, Toriel pauses in her words as she notices the protagonist's expression to the scent of the Snail Pie she baked. Toriel's battle continues as normal until the end, where the Annoying Dog walks on-screen and exclaims it is the end of {{user}}d Mode. Toriel is displeased by this announcement and makes various expressions. Afterwards, she instead considers baking another pie, even if she was supposed to die via FIGHTing. When the Annoying Dog admits to consuming the previous pie, she leaves the area. After Flowey insults the player, and asks if the player will keep going, off-screen, Toriel simply remarks, "It's over."

True Pacifist Route Toriel appears again just as Asgore and the protagonist prepare to fight, interrupting him with her fire magic much like she did with Flowey. She explains that she was constantly worried about the protagonist, and realized that they would have to take a life to leave, something she was trying to prevent since the beginning. When Asgore expresses his delight at her return, Toriel scolds him for his cowardice. She criticizes Asgore's plan on freeing monsterkind and rejects his request to be friends. As the protagonist's friends arrive, she introduces herself to them and recognizes Sans's voice immediately. She tells the protagonist that while they may have to stay underground with all their friends, they will live a happy life regardless. Flowey then appears. Having absorbed the six human SOULs, he binds Toriel and company with vines. When Flowey tries to kill the protagonist for good, Toriel is the first monster to intervene, using her fire magic to block Flowey's bullets. Her SOUL, along with every other monsters', is subsequently absorbed by Flowey, allowing him to become Asriel. During the protagonist's battle with Asriel, Toriel appears as one of the Lost Souls. However, she and the others are eventually saved by the protagonist when they help the Lost Souls regain their memories of their recent experiences with them.

Epilogue After the fight against Asriel concludes, she learns the protagonist's name, "Frisk". She tells them that they are free to go through the underground to talk to more of their friends. Meanwhile, Alphys upgrades Toriel's phone, allowing her to send text messages. Frisk leaves the underground with Toriel and their other friends. As the others leave Frisk to begin their lives on the surface, Toriel asks Frisk what they will do now. If Frisk decides to stay with Toriel, she says that none of this would have happened if they remained with her at the beginning of the game and that it was for the best that they decided to leave the Ruins. She then promises to take care of Frisk for as long as they need. Like in the Ruins, Toriel takes Frisk's hand as they walk off-screen together. After the credits, Toriel brings a slice of pie to Frisk's room. If Frisk says that they "have places to go", Toriel says that she will see them later. After the credits, Frisk and their friends are shown together in a sepia-toned photograph. In the credits sequence, Toriel welcomes Monster Kid to a school that she teaches at.

Genocide Route Toriel behaves as she does in all other routes until her battle with the protagonist, where they deplete her HP in one hit. She immediately recognizes their hatred, and claims she was protecting the rest of the underground from the protagonist before collapsing and turning to dust.

In battle For an in-battle description, see Toriel/In battle. Relationships The protagonist Toriel is affectionate with and protective of the protagonist. While she guides the protagonist, she often looks behind her and waits for the protagonist to follow her. Toriel instantly refers to them as "my child", which becomes a recurring line as she enjoys their company During puzzles, Toriel is patient and offers guidance. When the protagonist completes a puzzle, Toriel praises them. At the blueprint puzzle, she hesitates before asking to hold the protagonist's hand through the puzzle, reasoning that it is too dangerous for them. Toriel is surprised if the protagonist calls her "mom", and states that if it makes them happy, she heartily approves of it. Calling Toriel on her phone in the Ruins and flirting with her makes her assume the protagonist is joking. If they do it again, she is unsure what to make of that. If they flirt with her after calling her "mother", she becomes uncomfortable and calls the protagonist an "interesting" child. She also mentions this in the epilogue. At her home, Toriel reveals that she wants to raise the protagonist, and her future plans for them, such as educating them herself. When Toriel reveals the extra room to the protagonist, she brings them over to it, and strokes their head. If the protagonist insists on leaving, Toriel tries to distract them with snail trivia before excusing herself. In the basement, Toriel insists she is protecting them. If the protagonist spares her, she lets them leave the Ruins, but not before giving them a parting hug. If the protagonist kills her when she stops attacking, she says that the protagonist is no different from the monsters outside the Ruins and laughs hysterically before she dies. On the Genocide Route, she realizes that by keeping the protagonist in the Ruins, she was protecting not them, but the underground's inhabitants. If the game is reset, Toriel says that talking to the protagonist is like "meeting an old friend for the first time" and also says that she feels this way about most fallen humans.

Asgore Asgore is Toriel's ex-husband. They were extremely close while married, winning first place in the '98 Nose Nuzzle competition and open about their affection for one another. During their marriage, Toriel's nicknames for Asgore included "Fluffybuns" and "Gorey". Toriel left Asgore and New Home after he declared war on humanity. Upon their reunion on the True Pacifist Route, Toriel criticizes his plan for freeing monsters but still believes that he deserves mercy, even though he is "terrible". When Asgore asks if they can reconcile or at least be friends, Toriel responds negatively. While she appears to be civil with Asgore when she speaks to him about the future of the underground in the aftermath of the fight against Asriel, once they are on the surface and everyone else has left, Asgore wonders whether he should leave too, and Toriel glares at him, prompting him to depart. In the ending credits, she does not mind him trimming the bushes in her vicinity, hinting at a developing tolerance.

Asriel Asriel is Toriel's son. While little is known about their relationship, she is implied to have loved Asriel dearly. Despite being "really upset" when he and the fallen human had accidentally poisoned Asgore, she likely didn't hold much of a grudge against him. Toriel was greatly saddened by Asriel's death and still loves him years later, as indicated by her routinely visiting the bed of golden flowers in the Ruins to care for them.

The fallen human The fallen human is Toriel's adoptive child, who she loved just as much as Asriel. After the human's death, she refused to let their body be left in an unburied coffin, and had brought their body to the Ruins to give them a proper burial. Little else is known of their relationship before the human's death. Toriel keeps a brand-name chocolate bar in her residence's kitchen, possibly in remembrance.

Flowey Toriel despises Flowey, and refers to him as a "terrible creature" for his attempt to kill the protagonist. Toriel is normally unaware that Flowey is Asriel, but seems to be aware on a subconscious level.

Sans Although Toriel and Sans have become good friends from their years of sharing jokes, they do not meet in person until the end of the True Pacifist Route, as well as the Family and Exiled Queen endings of the Neutral Route. They started their friendship by telling jokes to each other through the door between the Ruins and Snowdin. According to Sans, Toriel once entrusted him with protecting any human that left the Ruins. They continue to bond in the epilogue and text each other as Frisk backtracks through the underground.

Creation and development Toriel is meant to be a parody of tutorial characters such as Fi from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. This is punctuated by Toriel holding the protagonist's hand as she guides them through the blueprint puzzle. Toriel's inclusion was also because Toby felt that general RPGs, such as the Pokémon games, EarthBound and Mother 3, also lacked involved motherly characters. Originally, Toriel was designed to be a human-like goddess monster, but this was later changed as Toby considered her to be too similar to Myria from Breath of Fire III. Her horns were initially not a part of her design, and was added to distinguish her from the Mimiga. Toby also admits that he had difficulty drawing her hands. Earlier in development, Toriel's death was intended to be mandatory to progress. The choice to make her spareable was made while her dialogue was being written as in Toby's eyes, it felt "wrong" to have violence be the only option. In the game files, there is a sprite called spr_torielboss_suicide, looking similar to the sprite where she is killed. This implies that at some point in development, it was possible for Toriel to kill herself. In a 2013 MSPAForums post regarding the Undertale Demo, Toby admits that he prefers that the players do not have a choice on staying with Toriel. The dialogue after Toriel is spared is of her distancing herself from the protagonist, as she does not want to be distressed over them. In the post, he also mentions that Toriel "turns her phone off so she can think for a while".

Outside of Undertale Kickstarter On the Undertale Kickstarter page, Toriel is featured along with Flowey and the protagonist on the Undertale promotional art by Guzusuru. In the Stretch Goals section, Toriel bows her head on the "Thank you very much!" banner underneath. In other banners, Toriel sits in the guest room in her home, and reads a book to the protagonist. There are also various artworks from Temmie Chang, where she occasionally drew Toriel being muscular, alongside Flowey and the Annoying Dog. One such example is featured as the "Beauty" Border for console versions of Undertale.

Undertale Q&A For Undertale's 1st Anniversary, a Q&A occurred. According to Sans, at some point after the events of the game, Toriel drank three glasses of wine and threw pizza at him like frisbees. Further in 2017, Toby Fox clarified that these pizzas were meant to be miniature Lunchables pizzas and not regular, full-size pizzas, but he doesn't mind either way because he finds the concept of Toriel throwing full-size pizzas at Sans to be funny.

3D Toriel A 3D figure of Toriel is often shown in official video content, such as Undertale trailers. Most of the time, the 3D Toriel performs events that do not happen in the game, with a disclaimer stating so.

Cucumber Quest Toriel-shaped slippers appear on page 675 of Gigi D.G.'s webcomic Cucumber Quest, worn by Peridot. Toby Fox used this image as his Twitter avatar for a period of time in 2015.

Trivia If the player attempts to name the fallen human "Toriel", the narration reads "I think you should think of your own name, my child", and the game bars the name from use. Toriel has a sock drawer despite never wearing socks in-game. The narrator's reaction to Toriel's sock drawer and Sans's sock pile is similar. Attempting to open the menu by pressing C after fleeing her battle makes the menu disappear instantly. Leaving the room while sliding against the wall also causes the protagonist to appear in the wrong spot in the previous room. This effect ends after leaving the room. Toriel once wore a flower-patterned muu-muu; other monsters complimented her by saying "nice muu-muu", but she assumed everyone was calling her a cow and never wore it again. The Toriel plush doll sold on Fangamer has a white heart hidden inside, representing her SOUL. The doll must be cut or ripped open in order to retrieve the heart. Toriel's dialogue after she is fatally wounded has the slowest text speed in the game, at 10 frames per character, or three characters a second.

Asgore Dreemurr (JP: アズゴア・ドリーマー) (/ˈæzɡɔːr ˈdɹiːmər/ AZ-gore DREE-mər) is a main character and a secondary antagonist in Undertale. Asgore is the king of the underground and its Kingdom of Monsters. He plans to kill seven humans and use their SOULs to break the barrier and free monsterkind. He is the ex-husband of Toriel, father of Asriel, adoptive father of the fallen human, and the penultimate boss of the Neutral Route.

Profile Appearance Asgore is a large Boss Monster, and the tallest main character in Undertale. Asgore has two large curved horns, golden-blond mane and beard, white fur, long ears, a snout, and a set of visible fangs. Asgore wears a small, three-pointed crown atop his head, golden pauldrons and a long purple cape that slightly drags along the ground, which he often uses as a cloak for his armored body. Asgore's armor consists of a large chestplate, with a winged crest of the implied "angel" from the Delta Rune emblem, and his tasset visually resembling the triangles of the emblem. Underneath is a standard outfit, consisting of pants and a shirt, though only the shirt's collar can be seen in color. Asgore's weapon in battle is a sharp red trident, adorned with a six-petaled flower at its base. In the True Pacifist ending credits, Asgore is shown to have golden-blond arm hair on his forearms, muscular arms, and a rotund stomach, in contrast to his broad-chested armored appearance. While Asgore still retains his crown, he instead wears a white flower-patterned, pink Hawaiian t-shirt, and long purple pants.

Personality Asgore is kind and upbeat, yet often quiet. He speaks in Southern slang, such as "howdy" and "golly", similarly to his son Asriel. Asgore's interests include gardening, humming, making tea such as golden flower tea, going for walks, sparring with Undyne, dressing up and acting as Santa Claus, and puns. He has a sense of humor, as he accepts being called "Fluffybuns" after Toriel accidentally nicknamed him in public. However, he is bad at naming places, as evidenced by him naming the kingdom the "Kingdom of Monsters", the kingdom's first capital city "Home", and its latest capital city "New Home". Gerson suggests that Asgore may not be too intelligent, as he states everyone knew Toriel managed governing. Despite this, monsters respect Asgore as a powerful leader. Many monsters refer to him by his name, or by nickname, and partially by his title. Asgore's name is always fully capitalized, and sometimes in red text, yellow text, or a combination of both. However, he only fights humans to give hope to monsterkind. Asgore feels miserable for the deaths of the six humans, does not want to kill anybody, and feels guilty for declaring war on humanity. This guilt seemingly extends to Asgore destroying the MERCY option. Asgore clings to the past, wishing to see his wife and Asriel even though both of them have been gone for a long time. He writes the same short positive phrase in his journal every day, presumably to not think about his guilt or his family. However, he seemingly tries to bake Toriel's Butterscotch Pie multiple times, which is one of his favorites.

Etymology His last name, Dreemurr, is an anagram of "murderer" and a homophone of "dreamer". Asgore's first name is an anagram of the Latin word "aegros", which can mean troublesome, anxious, sad, difficult, or reluctant. His full name is an anagram of "Sage or Murderer". "Asgore" is similar to the old Norse name Asgeirr, meaning "God Spear"; this may be a reference to the large trident he wields in battle. It is also an anagram of "a gorse". Gorse is a poisonous yellow flower, similar to the flowers in his throne room.

Main story History Before the events of Undertale, Asgore and Toriel ruled monsterkind as king and queen. One day, the humans attacked the monsters abruptly out of fear of their SOULs being absorbed, with many monsters being massacred. Following the war, monsters were sealed in the underground by humans with the barrier. Fearful of more attacks, monsters retreated further into the Ruins, and Asgore named their new city "Home". Toriel and Asgore later had a son, Asriel. No longer fearing humans, in early 201X, Asgore, his family, and much of monsterkind moved out of Home and ventured deeper into the underground. Asgore's family and some of monsterkind eventually settled in their new capital, which Asgore named "New Home". Near the end of 201X, the fallen human, who had fallen into the Ruins, was adopted by Asgore and his family as their child. For some time, Asgore's family lived in Asgore's Home, close to the barrier. One day, the fallen human fell very ill, much to Asgore's concern. After the human's death, followed by Asriel's death shortly after, Asgore blamed humans and declared war on humanity in a fit of anger. He swore to kill any human that fell into the underground and use their SOULs to break the barrier and exterminate all humans. Toriel, disgusted with him, left New Home and returned to the Ruins. Before the protagonist fell into the underground, W.D. Gaster disappeared, and Asgore did not hire a new royal scientist for a long time. While Asgore tended to the golden flowers, he also went for walks and interacted with monsters often. At unspecified points in time, six more humans fell into the underground, and Asgore collected their SOULs for future use. At one point, Asgore was impressed by Alphys's invention of a robot with a SOUL, and hired her as the new royal scientist. Asgore requested Alphys to research SOULs in an attempt to break the barrier. Though puzzles were meant as a precaution versus humans, Asgore eventually corrected older mandates to make the underground safer to traverse on multiple occasions. This includes the spikes from Snowdin's puzzles and the precarious bridges in Waterfall.

Neutral Route Asgore revealing the six human SOULs before his battle, with one container being empty. After the protagonist traverses New Home, they find Asgore watering the golden flowers in the Throne Room. Realizing he has a visitor, Asgore turns around, greets them and then is visibly taken aback, as he realizes the protagonist is a human. He comforts them as he brings them to the barrier, giving them several opportunities to turn back if they have anything left to do before the fight. Asgore does not mind the delay, admitting that he is not ready either. Before the battle, Asgore tells the protagonist that it was nice knowing them. He then draws his trident and destroys the MERCY button. FIGHTing Asgore is the only way to proceed. Much like with Toriel, attacking Asgore when he is at low HP deals significantly greater damage. Unlike Toriel, he survives the attack with a small amount of health remaining and kneels in defeat, talking to the protagonist about his declaration of war against humanity, admitting that he only wanted to give the monsters hope by continuing the war, and asking them to take his SOUL to escape the underground. The protagonist is given the choice of killing Asgore by selecting the FIGHT option or sparing him by selecting the partially repaired MERCY option. If the protagonist chooses to FIGHT, Asgore dies with a sorrowful smile. Before the protagonist can take his SOUL and pass through the barrier, Flowey shatters Asgore's SOUL, and congratulates the protagonist for affirming his "kill or be killed" philosophy. If the protagonist chooses MERCY, Asgore is surprised that the protagonist would sacrifice their freedom for the sake of keeping hope alive in the underground, and offers to care for the protagonist as his own child. Flowey ambushes Asgore, destroying his body and SOUL in succession, then mocking the protagonist for being unwilling to accept his "kill or be killed" philosophy. If the protagonist has already completed the Neutral Route, had killed Flowey (or followed Flowey's offer to spare Asgore by gaining no EXP) beforehand, and chooses to spare Asgore again, Asgore begins to mention that he would care for the protagonist, but stops himself, realizing that his SOUL is the key to getting the protagonist through the barrier. Telling the protagonist that it was what his son would have wanted, he kills himself to give the protagonist his SOUL, hoping that they find a way to free the monsters. Asgore then fades to dust, his SOUL remaining for a moment before being destroyed by Flowey, who mocks the protagonist for thinking that killing him would have made a difference since he would return to kill Asgore anyway. If the protagonist aborted the Genocide Route, Flowey refers to the protagonist by the name of the fallen human before telling them that this is a "kill or be killed" world. After defeating Omega Flowey, the protagonist crosses the barrier and leaves the underground. Asgore's death has a grave impact on the monsters, the outcome of which is further shaped through the protagonist's actions in-game.

True Pacifist Route Much like how she stopped Flowey in the beginning, Toriel interrupts the fight with Asgore, stating how awful it is that he could seek to hurt the protagonist. She then explains that she intervened to prevent both Asgore and the protagonist from killing each other. While Asgore is ecstatic to see Toriel again, he is saddened when she chastises him for his plan to collect human SOULs, arguing that he could have crossed the barrier with only one SOUL, but instead chose to wait and hope another human never came, which he solemnly agrees with. After that, Undyne, Alphys, Papyrus, and Sans arrive and begin conversing, until Flowey appears. During the fight against Asriel, Asgore appears as one of the Lost Souls alongside Toriel. The ACTs for Asgore's Lost Soul (Mercy, Stare, Talk) parallels his battle in the Neutral Route. After the fight, he is then seen in the epilogue, where he is first available for a conversation along with the other main characters, and later asks the protagonist if they would become the monsters' ambassador to humanity on the surface. In the True Pacifist ending credits, Asgore can be seen trimming a hedge to the shape of Papyrus's face in front of Toriel's new school.

Genocide Route After the protagonist kills Sans and enters the Throne Room, Asgore greets them, comments on Flowey's warning and inquires on what kind of monster they are. Though he does not intend to kill the protagonist, they still attack and deplete his HP in one hit. Horrified and bewildered, the helpless Asgore is subsequently finished off by Flowey, who also destroys his SOUL.

Relationships Toriel Toriel is Asgore's ex-wife. Before they separated, they used to be "insufferable together, nuzzling noses, bein' all cute n' cuddly", as described by Gerson. The two ultimately separated after the deaths of their children and Asgore's declaration of war on humanity. After Toriel's departure, it seems that Asgore greatly misses her presence. A "Room under renovations" sign is put on her room door in Asgore's Home, and multiple crumpled pie recipes imply that Asgore attempted (and failed) to recreate the way her pies tasted. This is further supported by his reaction to the protagonist eating Toriel's Butterscotch Pie during their fight. After being defeated, he tells the protagonist he only wants to see his wife and child again. When Toriel interrupts the battle between Asgore and the protagonist, she chastises him for his plan to collect human SOULs and even turns him down when he asks her if they can be friends again, which makes him sorrowful. However, after the fight against Asriel, where their SOULs are saved as one, her aggression towards him seems to cool down. In the True Pacifist Ending, Asgore can be seen trimming the bushes in front of Toriel's school.

Undyne When Undyne was younger, she met Asgore in person and challenged him to a fight. After Asgore defeated her by dodging all her blows, refusing to land his own, he offered to train her. When she finally knocked him down, Asgore was overjoyed, much to the surprise of Undyne. Asgore kept training Undyne until she became the captain of the Royal Guard. Undyne knows Asgore's favorite type of tea, and the fact that he often gets marshmallows stuck in his beard when he drinks hot cocoa, implying that he often visits her home.

Gerson Gerson implies that he and Asgore have been long-time friends, although it is unclear how long Gerson was a hero to monsterkind. Gerson can recall Asgore's naming style, and moments from Asgore's life, such as when Toriel called Asgore "Fluffybuns". Gerson is seemingly the only monster Asgore confided his past pessimism on freedom and humans trusting monsterkind.

Alphys Asgore hired Alphys after she impressed him with Mettaton. Asgore is friendly to Alphys, and wholly trusts her during her research of determination. He supported Alphys by asking for monsters who had recently "fallen down", and had let her experiment with the captured human SOULs. Asgore also gave Alphys message updates, both formal and friendly ones, such as him finding a teacup that looks like her. However, he did not seem to check on her research's progress. In the True Pacifist Route's epilogue, Asgore is still on friendly terms with Alphys. He becomes interested in anime after he overhears Undyne and Alphys's conversation, and readily forgives and comforts Alphys when she admits the truth.

Asriel Asriel is Asgore's biological son. Asgore loved him dearly, as much as he did the fallen human. Asriel's habit of using words such as "howdy" and "golly" likely came from his father, as did, potentially, his lack of naming skills, having dubbed his flower form "Flowey". After the death of his son, Asgore, like Toriel, was saddened by his death. He was not aware that Flowey was his son. Before Asgore kills himself in one of outcomes of the battle with him, he says that the protagonist's freedom is exactly what his son would have wanted.

The fallen human The fallen human was Asgore's adoptive child, whom he loved just as much as Asriel. Asgore considered them "the future of humans and monsters", as is repeated on the Game Over screen, VHS tape 5 in the True Lab, and when the protagonist sleeps on the bed in Toriel's Home. On the Genocide Route, Flowey states that despite trying "hundreds of ways" to get Asgore to show him the six human SOULs, he is confident the fallen human can convince Asgore to do so.

The protagonist Asgore is polite and friendly to the protagonist, despite them being a human. Asgore attempts to comfort the protagonist numerous times, and tells them to take their time before their battle. When the protagonist continues, Asgore says that he was pleased to meet them and says goodbye to them before starting the battle. If the protagonist attempts to ACT and chooses "Talk", Asgore falters, but continues to attack. If the protagonist explains that they have died before, Asgore acknowledges it with a regretful nod, but continues attacking nonetheless. When Asgore is defeated, he explains his regrets, and tells the protagonist take his SOUL to leave "this cursed place". If the protagonist spares Asgore, he questions their reason, then suggests they could live together, along with Toriel, as a family. If Asgore was spared on a previous playthrough, he instead admits he believes the protagonist is the Angel of the Delta Rune's prophecy. Remorseful, Asgore sacrifices his SOUL to them, in hopes that they find the truth. In the True Pacifist Route epilogue, Asgore properly asks if they want tea. After seeing the surface, Asgore asks if the protagonist can be monsterkind's ambassador to the humans. On the Genocide Route, Asgore does not recognize the protagonist as a human, and questions what kind of monster they are.

Creation and development Development Although Asgore's armor appears to be full-body at first glance, prototype sprites shown on page 129 of the UNDERTALE Art Book reveal that only the Delta Rune and chestplate are armor, with him wearing standard clothes underneath. His early sprites also reveal that the sleeves of his shirt are white, while his pants are purple, matching Toriel's robe. While his outfit is heavily obscured in his final overworld sprites, the collar of Asgore's shirt is still visible. Asgore was originally planned to have an intimidating personality, but was given a more goofy personality after Toby Fox was inspired by his friend Reid Young, a co-founder of starmen.net and Fangamer who played an early demo version of Undertale on Fangamer's official Twitch channel.

Outside of Undertale Kickstarter Asgore appears as a still silhouette at the end of the Undertale Kickstarter video. His shoulder pauldrons and trident appear thinner, and his head shape is less defined. The overall background he appears in is similar to his battle background, though it is a brighter purple gradient, and less refined.

UNDERTALE Alarm Clock The UNDERTALE Alarm Clock has excerpts for Asgore's Winter Dialogue. It reaffirms Asgore's interest in and role as Santa Claus. Asgore also mentions his unseen, close friendship with Rudy's Undertale counterpart, reminiscing about the times he and Rudy used to place presents side-by-side, filling the role of Santa and Rudy. While Rudy had passed away prior to the events of the game, Asgore is happy that Rudy's daughters would grow up on the surface. His description of Rudy's youngest daughter implies that she is the Undertale counterpart of Noelle. In his eighth excerpt, Asgore agrees that it is "more efficient" that Toriel fills the cup to the brim, which alludes to Flowey's excerpt, where Toriel reminisces about the fallen human filling their glass of water to the brim. Asgore also appears in other character's excerpts. In Papyrus's excerpts, Asgore becomes emotional while watching Mettaton's Christmas-themed movies. In Sans's excerpts, Sans mentions that Asgore got lost in Papyrus's maze. However, Undyne found Asgore at a homemade fire, eating a fruitcake as if it was "mre" rations. In Undyne's excerpts, Asgore is a member of her snow hockey team. However, he accidentally gets stuck in a fishing hole, and does not ask for help. Undyne later helps him, also discovering that someone had written "some king" on Asgore's behind. When Alphys chooses to watch Mad Mew Mew's streamer event, Asgore decides to quietly watch with her as well.

Trivia If the player attempts to name the fallen human "Asgore", the narration reads "You cannot." and the game bars the name from use. Due to the fact that he is a boss monster, Asgore cannot age unless he has a living child aging alongside him. However, because Asgore's son, Asriel, is dead, Asgore cannot age. Asgore's overworld sprite features a replica of the Delta Rune laid over his cape and connected to his pauldrons, but the replica is absent from his battle sprite. Asgore's facial expression when he gets hit by Toriel's fire magic before the fight against Asriel, depicting his eyes bulging and an open, shocked mouth, is similar to Flowey's face when he gets hit in the same way. In the UNDERTALE Soundtrack, all the tracks after "ASGORE" are hidden, indicating Asgore to be the game's final boss. While this is incorrect for a first playthrough, the misdirection is intentional, as Asgore was publicly referred to as the final boss prior to the game's release. He also acts as the final boss on all Neutral completions besides the first.

ASRIEL Also known as God of Hyperdeath (True Pacifist Route) Azzy (short nickname)

Relationships Toriel (mother) Asgore (father) The fallen human (best friend, adoptive sibling) Flowey (posthumous, SOULless self)

Asriel Dreemurr (JP: アズリエル・ドリーマー) is the true form of Flowey, and the overarching antagonist of Undertale. As the biological child of Toriel and Asgore, he is the former prince of monsters, as well as being the best friend of the fallen human. At the end of all three routes, Asriel appears in one of his forms, and is the last monster the protagonist confronts. As Asriel, he serves as the final boss of the True Pacifist Route.

Profile Appearance Asriel is a Boss Monster; like his mother, he resembles the Mimiga species from Cave Story. He has white fur, long ears, a snout, and a set of visible fangs. As a child, he lacks horns and has a small tuft of fur atop his head, unlike his parents. He wears a green long-sleeved shirt with yellow stripes and black pants, similarly to the fallen human's clothing. The number of stripes on his shirt varies: in his battle sprite before becoming the "God of Hyperdeath" it has four, in the flashback cutscene during his battle it has one, and in his overworld appearance it has two. Asriel's overworld sprite shares a color palette (white, yellow, green, and black) with Flowey's.

God of Hyperdeath In contrast to his appearance as a child, Asriel has black sclerae with white slit pupils, longer fangs, a pair of horns, and black markings on the sides of his face. He wears a long robe with white sleeves and the Delta Rune symbol, akin to Toriel's robe, as well as a large collar with shoulder pads. He also wears a locket similar to the Heart Locket, which is named spr_asriellocket.

Final form Asriel's body becomes more geometric, his horns are longer, and his claws and teeth get sharper. He has a pair of wings that continuously change color, and his lower body becomes sharp and heart-shaped. This form physically resembles the Delta Rune, as well as Undyne the Undying's armor and Mettaton NEO's body.

Personality Before his death, Asriel was a docile, loving, and gentle child. He was also compassionate, as he helped the injured fallen human despite The War of Humans and Monsters. In the VHS tapes, Asriel's dialogue implies he highly trusted the fallen human, as he continued their plan to break the barrier to free monsterkind in spite of his doubt and discomfort. As Flowey, he lacks a SOUL and is incapable of feeling love. This saddened him initially, as he blamed himself for his fate. Eventually, he became resentful and murderous. After temporarily regaining his compassion, Asriel regrets adopting the "kill or be killed" philosophy and apologizes for his actions to the protagonist, understanding that they may not forgive him. Upon exhausting all of his dialogue during the True Pacifist Route epilogue, Asriel will say "Don't you have anything better to do?" to the Protagonist, a quote said several times by Flowey. It is possible that Asriel inherited his father's trait of being bad at coming up with names, as he named his flower form "Flowey".

Etymology Asriel's name has several origins and meanings behind it. It is a combination of the names of his parents, Asgore and Toriel, likely stemming from Asgore being terrible at naming things, and Toriel's implied affinity for names ending in "riel". Interestingly, the name follows Anglo-Saxon naming traditions, from where the English language imported names such as Albert, Edgar, or Wilfred. His name may have also been inspired by typical goat naming conventions, in which goats are named after a combination of both their parents' names. "Asriel" is partially derived from "Azrael", the angel of death in some sects of Judaism and Islam. It is also an anagram of "Israel", the country where Judaism was founded. "Asriel Dreemurr" is an anagram of "Serial Murderer", referencing his violent behavior as Flowey. "Dreemurr" is similar in pronunciation to "Dreamer", alluded by the "Dream" ACT in the battle with him and by the title of a track that plays during said battle, Hopes and Dreams. "Asriel" is a name of Hebrew origin that means "helped by God". This name appears several times in the Tanakh, the equivalent to the Christian Old Testament. The literal translation is "I shall be prince of God". "Asriel" is an anagram of "Ralsei", which is the name of a character with a similar appearance from Deltarune, a game Toby Fox also created. His name and appearance could have also been inspired by Sariel, from the game Touhou: Highly Responsive to Prayers.

Main story In 201X, long before the events of Undertale, Asriel was the prince of monsters in the underground. In the Ruins, he found the fallen human — the first human to fall into the underground. He helped them up, then assisted them as he brought them to New Home. After bringing them to his parents, the fallen human became Asriel's best friend and adoptive sibling. At some point, the two devised a plan to break the barrier and free monsterkind. When the fallen human fell ill due to consuming buttercups, Asriel absorbed their SOUL to fulfill their last wish, which was to see the golden flowers at their village on the surface. With their shared SOUL and body, the fallen human carried their own body across the barrier to their home village. The villagers assumed Asriel had killed the human child and attacked him in response. Asriel fled the village, refusing to fight back. Upon his return to the underground, he died from his injuries and turned to dust, which spread across the garden in New Home. Later, as part of Alphys's experiments with determination, she injected the substance into one of the golden flowers from the garden — the first one to bloom after Asriel's death. Initial experiments on the flower vessel proved unsuccessful, and Alphys returned it to Asgore. Not long after being replanted, Asriel awoke within the garden, reincarnated as Flowey. Though the injection of determination granted Flowey the will to live, he soon found that neither his mother nor father could elicit any emotional response from him. He did not have a SOUL and thus could not feel love, joy, or compassion, which eventually turned him murderous.

Neutral Route Asriel does not appear in-person during the Neutral Route. However, when the protagonist falls into the garbage dump, they hear Asriel's voice while recalling a memory from the fallen human. As the protagonist traverses New Home, various monsters recount the story of Asriel and the fallen human to them.

True Pacifist Route Within the True Lab, the protagonist discovers that the fallen human and Asriel had worked together on a plan to retrieve six human SOULs and reach the surface. As the human was on their deathbed, Asriel told them he did not think it was a good plan anymore; ultimately, this led to him aborting the plan. When the protagonist restores the power to the True Lab's elevator and enters it, they receive a Cell Phone call from someone whose voice they "have never heard before". The voice is revealed to be Asriel's shortly after. Flowey transforms into Asriel after the protagonist encounters Asgore, by absorbing the six human SOULs along with every monster's SOUL (except Napstablook's). Asriel greets the protagonist as the fallen child before transforming into the "God of Hyperdeath". He tells the protagonist that he does not care about destroying the world anymore, and instead wants to reset the timeline so that everything unfolds again from the beginning. Asriel believes that the protagonist will continue even if he resets the timeline because they want a "happy" ending. Following the "Hyper Goner" attack, Asriel states that his first form is a fraction of his real power and transforms into his final form. He reasserts that the protagonist will die in a world where nobody remembers them. The protagonist calls out to the Lost Souls inside Asriel's SOUL, and reminds them that they are friends with the protagonist. After all of the Lost Souls regain their memories, the protagonist realizes that there is someone else who needs to be saved. The protagonist calls their name, and several sepia tone pictures of Asriel and the fallen human together are displayed. Overwhelmed by his memories of the fallen human, Asriel begins crying and reverts to his appearance as a child. Upon learning that the protagonist's name is "Frisk", Asriel tells them that the monsters really love them and apologizes for his actions. He then breaks the barrier with the power of the SOULs. He then tells Frisk that he has to go. Frisk has the option to hug Asriel before he leaves. As he walks away, Asriel tells Frisk to take care of his parents for him. Asriel can then be found at the flowerbed in the Ruins. Frisk may only encounter him immediately after they fight him; if the player watches the True Pacifist ending credits and reloads the game, Asriel does not appear. He speaks extensively to Frisk and offers them a different philosophy than before: "Don't kill, and don't be killed." He also mentions to be careful on the surface because "there are a lot of Floweys out there". Asriel briefly appears in the credits as the "God of Hyperdeath", reminding the player that they are not finished yet. Reverting to his appearance as a child, he begins the "Special Thanks" portion of the credits. After the credits, Asriel returns as Flowey if the game is reopened.

Genocide Route Asriel does not appear in-person on the Genocide Route. At New Home, the monsters who tell the story of Asriel and the fallen human do not appear, meaning Asriel's name is never mentioned on the route. Instead, Flowey welcomes the protagonist before discussing his experiences in the body of a flower, as well as how he discovered his ability to SAVE. After killing Asgore, Flowey emulates Asriel's face and voice while begging for the protagonist not to kill him.

Newsletter The ISSUE 7 - Autumn 2024 of the Newsletter, sent out on Undertale's 9th Anniversary, contains a Letter at the end. The letter is implied to be written by Asriel. Asriel writes that the fallen human's favorite number is nine, since it is "the highest number", and states that the human's reason is "if everything gets high enough, you become invincible. Nothing can hurt you anymore. Nothing can hurt anyone anymore." However, he prefers to not keep count of his good memories with the fallen human, and simply hopes that he will continue to be friends with them for "999 more years".

Relationships The protagonist On the True Pacifist Route, Asriel initially mistakes the protagonist for the fallen human. After the final boss fight, he realizes that Frisk is not the fallen human and asks what their real name is. If Frisk backtracks to the flowerbed, he tells them that he no longer regrets not killing the humans since another war would've happened otherwise, though he does think the situation could have ended better because of how long it took for the monsters to be freed. After the credits, Flowey asks the player not to reset everything and let Frisk live their life.

The fallen human Asriel found the fallen human when they fell into the underground. He became their best friend after they were adopted by the Dreemurr family, and the two formed a sibling-like bond. After the human carried their own body to their village on the surface, Asriel decided not to act on his best friend's desire to unleash their shared body's full power, and the villagers fatally wounded them. With the human's body in his arms, Asriel returned to the underground and collapsed from the injuries. After becoming Flowey, he could not think of a world without the fallen human due to considering them the only person who understands him, to the point of attempting to commit suicide and mistaking the protagonist for the fallen human. After the protagonist saves Asriel during the battle with him, he admits the fallen human "wasn't really the greatest person".

Asgore Asgore is Asriel's father. When Asriel first awakened as Flowey, Asgore was the one to find him. Asriel then "spent weeks" with his father, hoping to feel something; however, having lost his SOUL, he eventually discovered he felt nothing for Asgore anymore. Asriel's habit of saying "golly" and "howdy" is shared with Asgore.

Toriel Toriel is Asriel's mother. After failing to feel anything with Asgore, Flowey had turned to Toriel in hopes of feeling love again with her. This ultimately failed as well, as he could not love others without a SOUL.

Trivia If the player attempts to name the fallen human "Asriel", the narration reads "..." and the game bars the name from use. If the protagonist has not killed anyone, Flowey's monologue at the end of the Ruins includes the line "I am the prince of this world's future." This may be a hint at his old self, who was the prince of monsterkind prior to his death. Asriel originally stood in battle; he flies in the final game because, as stated in the UNDERTALE Art Book, he "looked like a doofus" just standing. Toby Fox considered giving Asriel's "God of Hyperdeath" form "boyband hair" for "five seconds" before rejecting the idea. However, he later said he was glad that Asriel was eventually understood as the kind of character who would have that hairstyle. A document from a very early stage of Undertale's development shared by Toby during the 10th Anniversary Stream revealed that Asriel was going to have two obtainable items related to him, "Asriel's Shirt" and "Asriel's Bat".
