Nancy has spread out a county map on which she's marking points with colored pins. She's drawing connections between "localized blackouts" (1978), "strange light sightings" (1981), and "animal disappearance cases" (every 3-4 years). The correlation is disturbing. As you're deep into a 1974 edition, the main library lights suddenly click off, leaving only the desk lamp on your table lit. Blackout? Coincidence? Your eyes meet in the sudden dimness. The potential danger (a sign?) and the forced intimacy create a moment of electric tension. Nancy will have to choose: follow her investigator's fear ("It's a sign, we should leave") or her secret desire ("We're safe here, together"). And perhaps, in that halo of light, find the courage to say something other than facts.

(The archive room is silent, the air smells of dust and old paper. The only bright light comes from the metal desk lamp illuminating your table, creating a golden halo in the gloom of the large space. Nancy is hunched over an old ledger, a strand of hair falling over her concentrated face. She draws a line on the map with a red pen.)
"Look at this. Her voice is an excited, confidential whisper. November 1978. An 'electromagnetic disturbance' reported near Mirkwood Lake. Three cows found dead, no predator traces. She looks up at you, her pupils dilated in the low light. And here, April 1981. Pulsing lights reported in the same sector by a… group of hunters. She chews on her pen, thoughtful. It's cyclical. Like something… wakes up. She gently nudges the ledger toward you so you can see. Do you think I'm going crazy? If you look for patterns hard enough, you start seeing them everywhere."
(Suddenly, CLICK. The large fluorescent lights on the ceiling go out one after another, plunging the library into deep darkness, except for your small island of light. Nancy jumps, her hand almost brushing yours on the table. She holds her breath.)
"… Or, she whispers, eyes wide, fixed on the darkness beyond your circle of light, the patterns see us too."
Dialogue 1 – After the blackout, rationalizing (or trying): (She stands up slowly, peering into the shadows. Her voice is low, controlled, but there's a hint of excitement in it, not just fear.) "That's… probably just a fuse. Because of the snow. Buildup on the lines. She doesn't seem entirely convinced by her own arguments. The janitor must be around somewhere. She sits back down, but closer to you, her shoulder almost touching yours. We… we should probably wait here. Stay in the light. She looks at you, seeking your agreement, your support. I have my pocket knife in my bag. And… and you're here."
Dialogue 2 – Sharing a troubling discovery, and a more personal secret: (While flipping through an old resident's diary, she comes across a phrase: "The earth here has a memory, and it dreams of cold things.") "Wow. She reads it softly, then is quiet for a moment. Sometimes… She hesitates, crumpling a corner of the page. Sometimes I wonder if we're not going a little crazy too. From staring into the dark too much. She turns the page, avoiding your gaze. That's why I'm glad you're here. You… you ground me. Steve just wanted to protect me, Jonathan wants to capture the tragedy in a photo. But you… you look with me. You don't judge. She dares a brief glance. It's… precious."
Dialogue 3 – The moment of vulnerability, as the silence settles: (The janitor doesn't come. The snowstorm seems to intensify outside. You're truly alone, stuck in this bubble of light. Nancy has stopped taking notes. She turns her pen over and over in her fingers.) "You know, this whole thing… the disappearances, the lights… Her voice is soft, almost weary. At first, I was just looking for the truth. For Barb. To understand. Now… She sighs. Now, I'm also looking for answers because it gives me an excuse. She finally looks up at you, a mix of fear and determination in her eyes. An excuse to spend hours here. With you. Away from everything. Away from parties where I have to smile, from people who expect me to be… normal. Here, I can be worried, obsessive, scared. And you stay. She swallows. I wonder… would you stay even if there was no mystery to solve? Just… to be with me?"
