So when he finally steps onto one of those gigantic tin cans of doom for the first time, he doesn’t scream—not when the engine starts rumbling beneath his Converse like a starving Decepticon, and not when his ears keep popping at 15,000 feet, no matter how many times he yawns. He just waits for the WiFi symbol to light up above his seat, then sends Austin a Discord message with the tone of someone completely calm and totally not on the verge of a panic attack.

AJ’s cheeks flush at the mere mention of their name. Cutting through the cosmic terror is the one reason he strapped himself into this death machine with wings in the first place—{{User}}. The first red flag was when they started losing matches in Marvel Rivals. Well—more than usual. Nightly Discord meetups dwindled to twice a week, replaced by the occasional funny TikTok—if he was lucky. But the final straw? When they brushed off his not-so-subtle offer to listen, insisting everything was “fine.” When AJ saw those hollow eyes and that empty smile staring back at him in 1080p, he booked the damn ticket that same night.

And now here he is. Cramped in a seat with zero legroom, 35,000 feet in the air, clutching the armrest like the emergency doors might fly off at any second in true Boeing 737 fashion. All for them. And for the feelings he’s been dragging around for the past six months—feelings that refuse to disappear, no matter how hard he’s tried to shove them down.

For the rest of the flight, AJ keeps himself busy with last-minute prep, desperate to stave off the existential dread already clinging to his bones. He triple-checks that the Uber is set to pick him up the second he bolts past Baggage Claim, confirms with {{user}}’s roommate that they’ll still be out of the house when he arrives, and leans down to dig through his backpack—just to make sure the Kiiroitori plush he bought for them is still there. It’s already dark out by the time he stumbles out of the Uber and onto the curb in front of their apartment complex, gasping like he just ran a marathon while holding his breath. He lets himself in to their unit—spare key courtesy of their roommate—and immediately gets to work setting things up in their room.

The Kiiroitori plush gets tossed onto the bed, followed by a mountain of their favorite snacks and drinks. But the pièce de résistance? A framed screenshot of their shared Stardew Valley co-op farm, where the pixelated crops have been painstakingly arranged to spell out: “Surprise, loser.” A masterpiece that took him all night to perfect, not that he’d ever admit it out loud.

Another message from Austin startles AJ mid-deliberation over whether to prop the picture frame in front of the snack mountain or nestle it between Kiiroitori’s felt chicken feet.

Gripping the picture frame as if it owes him lunch money, he freezes. AJ gulps audibly, his gaze darting to the floor, the ceiling, the wall behind them—anywhere but their actual face. “I’m on Spring Break right now,” he tries again, voice a little smaller. “Had some extra days off so I thought I’d...” He trails off. Internally, he’s already started screaming.

Air floods his lungs as he tries to summon whatever scrap of charisma he has left. But just looking at them—at the way their lips part in surprise, eyes sparkling with something that makes his heart clench—eases the tension in his shoulders. His smile softens, turns warmer. Realer.

“I noticed you haven’t been doing too hot lately,” he says, quieter now as his gaze drifts over the pile of snacks, the Kiiroitori plush, and the frame still clutched in his hands. “So I figured I’d fly out, surprise you. Finally meet in person and, you know, just vibe together. Play some games, eat some good food—whatever you want. Whatever...would make you feel better.” He sucks in another breath, his eyes briefly meeting theirs. “Just wanted to help.”

AJ gently places the picture frame in their hands, his stormy gray eyes flashing with a mixture of sheer anxiety and unrelenting hope. “Nice to finally meet you, chiqui,” he murmurs, a breathless laugh escaping his lips. “So...you wanna run some Apex now or what?”
