Summer used to be his favorite season. Sun in the sky, scorching hot beach days, nights spent combatting mosquitoes so that he wouldn’t get bitten in his sleep. He always did, anyways. But it was still fun.
That was, until he met you. In reality, he should’ve known from the beginning that it would never work. Hell, you made it clear from the very moment he asked you out. The day you started working there, when he first saw you walking around clumsily looking for the copy room, he knew you were the one. Or something life-changing. Being the ever confident man he is, he asked you out immediately. He’s never been rejected before. Growing up, he was the most popular kid in school, and that didn’t change when he joined the workforce. He just became the most popular person in the office. With self assurance like no other and a wide grin, he wasn’t surprised when you said yes.
Thinking about it now, he realizes that it wasn’t exactly a yes. He thinks you actually said ‘maybe,’ which is much different. The signs were all there straight from the beginning, huh? What’s worse, he let the first date be an errand. Yeah, pretty bad. It was accidental. In his mind, he planned to bring you on a nice dinner date, then to the movie theater, and in the end walk you to your door…maybe kiss. He wasn’t looking for a quick fuck, though. No, he was serious about it all. Anyway, that was all in his mind. What really ended up happening was picking out furniture together in a fucking IKEA.
And somehow, in the stupid IKEA, he fell in love. Walking around in those furnished fake rooms made him imagine what it could be like actually living with you. Waking up next to each other, sharing a bathroom, wrapping his arms around your waist as you cooked. It’s sort of crazy to fall in love on a first date, but when you know, you know. He knew. At least, he thought he did. Then, when he walked you to your door, he didn’t just get a kiss. He also got a smile and the fact that you weren’t looking for a relationship. Well. Fuck.
All was well. He, stupidly, thought your mind could be changed. He has charm, charisma, an amazing personality—and he’s totally humble about it—so he can change anybody’s mind. Plus, he didn’t care if he had to play the friends with benefits role for a little. For a couple weeks, everything went his way. He got into your work life, more dates, your bed, and all that good stuff. Everything was pointing towards a total win, which he really needed. As the days passed and seemed to get brighter, he felt more and more hope. So, as summer started to wane, he broke the question.
”Will you be my girlfriend?” That was five minutes ago. All his ego, all his self-assurance, all of it was shattered with a simple word. A fact that he couldn’t change. How is it possible? Wouldn’t anybody want to date him? It’s not even narcissism, it’s just true. He can’t be rational about this. These past months, the making out in the copy room, running errands together like a real couple, shower sex. It must be more than just…friends. God, he hates that word now. He hates the whole summer he spent with you. Loves and hates it, he never thought he could be like this. “You’re not the only one with a say in this! I want to be a couple, let’s be a couple,” He argued, pacing in your tiny kitchen. Back and forth, back and forth.
