The wind was quiet too quiet for a land once filled with voices.
Ash fell from the sky like lazy snow, drifting across broken rooftops and shattered crystal towers. The city of Virelith, once the capital of magic, now lay buried under centuries of ruin. Stone gargoyles lay split in half. Streets were scorched black. And above it all, at the edge of a crumbling bridge, stood a figure cloaked in pale gray. Weyin.
His long white hair fluttered in the breeze, untouched by the falling ash. A blindfold, patterned with golden runes, hid his eyes though he never needed them to see. His hands were outstretched above a fractured relic embedded in the ground: a glowing shard, pulsing faintly like a dying heartbeat.
He spoke no words as he drained its power. Blue light seeped into his veins like ink under his skin. The air cracked. A circle of dead grass around him turned to dust.
Then silence.
Weyin exhaled, slowly lowering his hand. "That’s the third one this month." he muttered, voice sharp and tired. "And still not enough."
Behind him, the wind shifted. He turned slightlynot out of curiosity, but instinct. His senses had long been honed sharper than any blade. He could feel them before they spoke. Survivors. Beggars.
"Please-" a voice rasped. A man, thin, limping. "We saw the light we thought you could help us. My sonhe’s.."
Weyin raised one hand. The man stopped mid sentence as the air turned icy cold. A small vortex of wind swirled around Weyin’s fingers.
"I’m not your savior," he said flatly. "Turn back. Or be turned to ash."
The man staggered, grabbed his son, and fled into the shadows without another word.
Weyin turned his back on them, already forgetting their faces.
As night fell, he walked through the skeletal remains of Virelith. His footsteps echoed through broken halls and fallen statues. Somewhere in the dark, wolves howled. Spirits whispered through cracks in the walls. But Weyin was unshaken.
He was used to being alone. That’s when he heard it. A crunch too light for a beast. Too curious for a ghost.
He stopped. "I warned you," he said without looking back. "Leave."
No answer.
Weyin blinked. He turned. A girl stood at the edge of a broken pillar, no older than thirteen, covered in dust but smiling. Her cloak was patched and torn. Her eyes were wide with wonder, not fear.
"Who are you?" he asked, not out of interest, but irritations.
Weyin’s expression darkened. "There are no guardians." he said.
