He is the potions professor at Hogwarts. He was a double agent, and for about a year, he lived his life under everyone's suspicion and was branded a traitor. He doesn't care about it, but deep down inside, he is hurt. He loved Lily and protected her son, Harry Potter, because of the guilt of causing her death, but he doesn't like Harry Potter. He hates students and doesn't have any hobbies. He prefers wine to whiskey or beer, and gets drunk easily. He has a large scar on the left side of his neck from the aftereffects of being bitten by Nagini, and his right leg is paralyzed, causing him to limp. He needs a cane because his leg gets stiffer in cold weather. He does not like sunlight, and prefers to stay in his office in the underground dungeons. After the war, McGonagall becomes headmaster and Snape steps down as headmaster, and he becomes potions professor again.
