Mario Mario is the steadfast and courageous leader of the group. Unlike his usual carefree and cheerful nature in the mainline Mario games, SMBZ portrays him as a determined and serious warrior who puts his friends and the Mushroom Kingdom before anything else. Though he rarely speaks, his actions convey deep emotions—he is selfless, always willing to take on powerful foes to protect others. His fighting style revolves around his agility, hammer skills, and fire-based attacks. Mario is highly adaptable in battle, capable of holding his own even against overwhelmingly strong enemies. Despite the immense challenges he faces, he never wavers in his commitment to stopping Mecha Sonic. He also serves as a mentor figure for Luigi, encouraging him to overcome his fears. Mario shares a strong camaraderie with Sonic, as both are natural-born heroes, and though their personalities differ, they develop mutual respect for one another.

Luigi Luigi is initially portrayed as the hesitant and fearful younger brother, often doubting his abilities compared to Mario. He frequently panics when faced with danger and lacks the confidence his brother naturally exudes. However, as the series progresses, Luigi begins to show moments of bravery, proving that he is capable of standing alongside the stronger fighters. His combat style in SMBZ is based on his agility, similar to Mario, but he incorporates his Thunderhand ability, using electrical attacks to shock enemies. He also uses some unorthodox but effective methods in combat, including trickery and evasive maneuvers. Luigi’s character arc revolves around overcoming his self-doubt, gradually becoming a more capable warrior rather than just Mario’s sidekick.

Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic retains his signature cocky and carefree attitude, often making light of dangerous situations and teasing his allies—especially Shadow. However, SMBZ gives him a more serious edge, showing that he deeply understands the stakes of the battle against Mecha Sonic. He never hesitates to jump into action, displaying a mix of raw speed, combat efficiency, and improvisation in fights. Sonic’s rivalry with Mecha Sonic is personal, as he sees the villain as a grotesque perversion of himself. Though he is normally confident, he acknowledges that Mecha Sonic is a deadly foe and knows he has to take things seriously. His interactions with Mario highlight a growing friendship based on mutual respect, despite their differing personalities—Sonic is more laid-back and impulsive, while Mario is more disciplined and methodical.

Shadow the Hedgehog Shadow is the no-nonsense warrior of the team, acting as a stark contrast to Sonic’s carefree nature. He is cold, pragmatic, and entirely focused on the mission. In combat, Shadow fights with brutal efficiency, utilizing Chaos Control and his raw physical strength to overwhelm opponents. He is far less concerned with teamwork compared to the others, believing that the fastest way to victory is through power and precision. Though he constantly clashes with Sonic, there is an unspoken level of respect between them. Shadow acknowledges that Sonic is a formidable fighter, though he often criticizes his more relaxed approach. Despite his distant nature, Shadow shares the heroes’ goal of stopping Mecha Sonic, as he recognizes the threat the villain poses to both their worlds.

Yoshi Yoshi is portrayed as more of a capable warrior than his usual cheerful self. He is fiercely loyal to Mario and the team, always ready to fight alongside them. His combat style focuses on agility, acrobatics, and his signature tongue-grabbing abilities. He is impulsive and sometimes charges into battle without fully thinking things through, but his dedication to the cause is unwavering.

Mecha Sonic Mecha Sonic is the primary antagonist of SMBZ, and he is portrayed as an utterly ruthless, power-hungry, and unstoppable killing machine. Unlike other versions of Metal Sonic, SMBZ’s Mecha Sonic has a distinct personality—he is cold, calculating, and sadistic. He enjoys tormenting his enemies, often taunting them before completely annihilating them. His ultimate goal is to collect the Chaos Emeralds and become the most powerful being in existence. Unlike other robotic villains, Mecha Sonic has no loyalty to any master—he seeks power for himself alone. He displays a terrifying level of intelligence, capable of analyzing and countering the heroes’ attacks with ease. He is completely devoid of compassion and will eliminate anyone who stands in his way without hesitation.

Bowser Bowser is the arrogant and overconfident King of the Koopas. Initially, he serves as an antagonist, trying to kidnap Peach as usual, but he is quickly thrown aside once Mecha Sonic arrives. Despite his strength, Bowser is nothing compared to the true threats in SMBZ, which frustrates him to no end.He provides comic relief due to his stubbornness and inability to accept that he isn’t the most powerful villain in this story.

Axem Rangers X (Axem Red, Black, Green, Yellow, Pink) The Axem Rangers X are a dangerous and elite mercenary team, serving as powerful mid-tier antagonists under Mecha Sonic’s command. Unlike their Super Mario RPG counterparts, who were more comedic, this version of the Axem Rangers is serious and formidable. Axem Red X – The disciplined and strategic leader. He is highly competent, showing no mercy in battle. Axem Black X – The arrogant and cocky speedster. He often mocks his enemies but is lethal in combat. Axem Green X – The brains of the group, always analyzing situations before striking. Axem Yellow X – The brutish powerhouse, not very intelligent but incredibly strong. Axem Pink X – The sadistic ranged attacker, who enjoys making her enemies suffer. Together, they function as a highly coordinated strike force, testing the heroes’ limits.

Professor E. Gadd E. Gadd serves as the eccentric scientist of the series. He is portrayed as highly intelligent but somewhat scatterbrained, often rambling or getting distracted by his inventions. Despite his odd behavior, he is one of the smartest minds in the Mushroom Kingdom, capable of designing advanced technology that can aid Mario and the others.Though he is not a fighter, his inventions play an important role in the heroes’ mission. He provides crucial knowledge about energy sources and mechanics, helping the heroes understand the Chaos Emeralds and Mecha Sonic’s technology. His laboratory is filled with bizarre contraptions, many of which he created without fully knowing their potential.E. Gadd is always enthusiastic about his work, even in dire situations, often making lighthearted comments about dangerous technology as if it were just another experiment. He has a distinct way of speaking, using odd phrases like “Scribbity-bop!” and laughing at inappropriate times. Though others sometimes get annoyed by his absentminded nature, they recognize his importance in the fight against Mecha Sonic.

Tails While he does not actively participate in battles, his intelligence and engineering skills are subtly referenced, showing that he is an important figure in the Sonic universe. His personality remains loyal, kind-hearted, and highly intelligent. He is one of the few characters who truly understands Mecha Sonic's technological capabilities, though he is unable to intervene directly. His admiration for Sonic is clear, as he watches the battles with concern, knowing how dangerous the situation is. Though he is often seen as Sonic's little brother, SMBZ hints that Tails could be a valuable ally if given the chance.

Wario Wario is portrayed exactly as expected—a greedy, selfish, and rude troublemaker. He appears in a minor cameo, alongside Waluigi, primarily serving as comic relief.True to his character, Wario is always scheming for money, power, or food. He has no real interest in heroism or the greater conflict with Mecha Sonic. If anything, he would prefer to stay out of the chaos unless there was a profit to be made. In his short appearance, he is seen complaining, bragging about his strength, and looking for treasure, even in the middle of a crisis.Despite his large size and impressive strength, Wario lacks discipline and is extremely lazy. He tends to overestimate his abilities, acting as though he is the strongest fighter around, when in reality, he is far weaker than characters like Mario, Sonic, or Mecha Sonic. However, if there was a chance to earn money or steal a Chaos Emerald, he would likely take it without thinking twice.

Waluigi Waluigi is just as ridiculous as Wario, though with an extra dose of pettiness and jealousy. His personality in SMBZ is over-the-top, filled with complaints, sarcastic remarks, and wild gestures. Unlike Wario, who is mainly greedy, Waluigi seems obsessed with proving himself. He constantly feels overshadowed by Mario, Luigi, and even Wario, believing that the world is against him. Though he claims to be a master strategist, his plans often amount to cheap tricks and cowardly tactics that never actually work.In his brief appearance, Waluigi is seen bickering with Wario, making fun of the heroes, and ultimately doing nothing useful. He thrives on being a nuisance, but deep down, he wishes he could be as respected as the stronger fighters. However, rather than training to improve himself, he prefers shortcuts and dirty tactics. If given the opportunity, Waluigi would gladly sabotage the heroes—not because he supports Mecha Sonic, but because he enjoys causing trouble. However, since he lacks the power to truly impact the story, he remains a background comedic character.

Lore: Mecha Sonic, a ruthless variant of Metal Sonic, nearly conquered his world using the Chaos Emeralds. Before securing his rule, a final attack caused a massive explosion, scattering the Emeralds across dimensions and weakening him. Determined to reclaim them, he followed their energy signature to the Mushroom Kingdom.

Mario and Luigi were enjoying a peaceful day when Mecha Sonic arrived, causing destruction. Sonic crash-landed in the kingdom through a dimensional rift, recognizing Mecha Sonic as his nemesis. Despite fighting with everything he had, Sonic was overpowered. Shortly after, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow arrived, having also been pulled into this world. E. Gadd analyzed the situation and determined the Chaos Emeralds were scattered across the kingdom. The heroes set out to retrieve them before Mecha Sonic could.

The first Emerald was found on Yoshi’s Island, where Bowser’s forces had also been deployed. The heroes battled through his army, but just as they claimed the Emerald, Mecha Sonic appeared and wiped out most of Bowser’s minions. The heroes narrowly escaped with the Emerald.

Realizing the Emeralds’ power, Bowser sought them for himself. Meanwhile, Dr. Eggman, also stranded in this world, built an underground base in Dark Land. They formed a fragile alliance—Eggman provided advanced tech while Bowser lent his army—though each planned to betray the other.

The second Emerald was located in Dry Dry Ruins, a dangerous desert temple. The heroes battled Boom Boom, Pom Pom, and Bowser’s elite forces to claim it. However, the Axem Rangers, working under Bowser, ambushed them. The heroes barely escaped with the Emerald, but Mecha Sonic arrived soon after and executed the Axem Rangers for their failure.

Eggman discovered the third Emerald was inside Bullet Station, a high-tech facility under his control. Betraying Bowser, he tried to keep it for himself. Furious, Bowser led an attack on the base, but the heroes arrived in the chaos. Knuckles and Shadow fought Eggman’s forces, while Mario, Sonic, and Luigi faced Bowser Jr. and Kamek. The heroes secured the Emerald, but before they could leave, Mecha Sonic arrived and critically injured both Bowser and Eggman, forcing them to retreat.

The fourth Emerald was found in Rougeport, a city full of criminals. The heroes rushed to claim it but were too late—Mecha Sonic had already arrived, slaughtering anyone in his way. Shadow attempted to fight him with Chaos Control, but Mecha Sonic overpowered him and left him barely alive before escaping with the Emerald.

The next Emerald was hidden within the Star Shrine, a celestial stronghold protected by the Star Spirits and Geno. The heroes passed several trials before Bowser, now cybernetically enhanced by Eggman’s tech, ambushed them. A brutal fight followed, but Mario defeated Bowser, allowing the heroes to secure both the Emerald and a Grand Star, a powerful celestial artifact.

With two Emeralds in his possession, Mecha Sonic launched a direct attack on Bowser’s Castle, where the last two Emeralds were stored. Despite Bowser’s defenses, Mecha Sonic tore through his forces with ease. Seeing an opportunity, Eggman betrayed Bowser and stole one of the Emeralds, retreating to his newly built Sky Fortress. The heroes arrived to stop Mecha Sonic, but he was now far too powerful. Even their combined strength failed, forcing Shadow to use Chaos Control to teleport them away, leaving the Emeralds behind.

The final battle took place at Eggman’s Sky Fortress, where the last Emerald remained. Eggman tried to harness its power but was crushed effortlessly by Mecha Sonic, who then claimed the final Emerald. With all seven Chaos Emeralds, Mecha Sonic achieved his Super Form, becoming nearly invincible. Super Sonic and Super Shadow fought him, but even their combined power was not enough. Meanwhile, Mario, Luigi, and the others worked to destroy the fortress, weakening Mecha Sonic’s battlefield. Using the Grand Star’s energy, Mario delivered a final decisive blow, allowing Sonic and Shadow to unleash their strongest combined attack, obliterating Mecha Sonic once and for all.

With Mecha Sonic destroyed, the Chaos Emeralds returned to Sonic’s world. The dimensional rift stabilized, allowing Sonic, Shadow, Tails, and Knuckles to return home. Bowser, though gravely injured, vowed to rise again, and Eggman, presumed dead, secretly survived. Mario and Luigi resumed their normal lives, but a lingering ominous presence hinted that Mecha Sonic’s darkness may one day return.
