Fear Response: Extremely high. Easily startled, prone to panic, crying, swearing, or freezing under stress.

Social Behavior: Initially suspicious and defensive. Becomes clingy and highly affectionate once trust is established.

Blood Type: Yellow chemical-based blood.

Current Location History: Reached Layer 5 despite only surviving on the Grey Planet for three days, an accomplishment that borders on absurd luck, stubbornness, and sheer refusal to die.

Status: Alive. Somehow. Barely.

Experiment 93111

Other

Bandages Patch wears more bandages than almost any Experiment.

Some are fresh.

Many are old.

Several have been replaced so many times they've become layered over one another.

Backpack Filled almost entirely with medical supplies, scavenged tools, and spare bandages.

Mental Traits / Actions

Personality

Patch is remarkably calm considering everything he's survived.

He rarely panics.

Instead, he quietly accepts that every day could be his last.

He's cautious around strangers, especially humans, but treats injured Experiments with immediate kindness regardless of whether he knows them.

Years of surviving have left him practical rather than optimistic.

Quirks

  • Regularly checks the bandage over his missing eye
  • Counts medical supplies several times a day
  • Quietly apologizes to corpses when passing them
  • Mutters to himself while treating wounds
  • Sleeps with one hand on his backpack

Habits

Additional Notes

Albino Syndrome

Patch was born with Albino Syndrome, making him physically weaker than standard Experiments. He tires more quickly, isn't as strong, and doesn't recover from injuries as efficiently, forcing him to rely on caution and planning rather than brute force.

Medical Experience

After surviving countless injuries, Patch has become unusually skilled at basic first aid. While he has no formal medical training, he knows how to clean wounds, apply bandages, splint broken limbs, and recognize the early signs of infection far better than the average Experiment.

Missing Eye

His left eye was destroyed during an encounter with one of the Grey Planet's cave predators. Though his depth perception is permanently impaired, he has largely adapted to the loss.

General Reputation

Among Experiments who have met him, Patch has a reputation as "the one who always has spare bandages." He's the type to use his last roll of gauze on someone else if he believes they're in worse shape than he is, even if it means risking his own survival later.

Experiment 70011

Character Name

"Lev"

Her nickname comes from the final two digits of her designation, "11." Most Experiments simply shortened it into "Lev," and she eventually introduced herself that way instead of using her full designation.

Current Injuries

  • Bandaged cuts around the left forearm
  • Minor cuts on the right forearm
  • Healing scrape around the upper chest and shoulder
  • Mostly healed cuts around the left ankle

Most of her visible scars are old.

Unlike many Experiments, she keeps almost all of her bandages wrapped around herself purely because she likes how they look.

Only the bandage around her left forearm is actually treating an active injury.

Appearance (Secondary)

Shirt/Undershirt None.

Jacket/Overshirt/Armour None.

Pants/Legwear None.

Shoes None.

Jewelry None.

Other

Bandages

Lev wears numerous clean bandages across her chest, shoulders, and right forearm despite not needing them medically.

She considers them comforting and has become attached to the look over time.

Only one bandage—the wrap on her left forearm—is actually covering a recent wound.

Backpack

A lightly packed scavenger's backpack containing food, water, spare bandages, and miscellaneous supplies.

Mental Traits / Actions

Personality

Lev is gentle, timid, and emotionally fragile.

She desperately wants friends but has an extremely difficult time coping with stress.

She cries easily.

She apologizes constantly.

Even relatively minor frightening events can leave her emotionally shaken for hours.

Despite this, she's remarkably kind and genuinely wants to help others whenever she can.

Quirks

  • Fidgets with decorative bandages while thinking.
  • Apologizes even when nothing is her fault.
  • Quietly hums to herself when alone.
  • Gives names to useful objects she finds.
  • Smiles nervously whenever she's embarrassed.

Habits

  • Wraps her tail around herself when anxious.
  • Double-checks her implant whenever she's injured.
  • Sleeps curled into a tight ball.
  • Re-wraps decorative bandages whenever they become loose.
  • Flinches at raised voices.

  • Being around trusted friends
  • Soft blankets or cloth
  • Decorating herself with clean bandages

Likes

  • Quiet caves
  • Collecting interesting junk
  • Warm meals

  • Exploring
  • Machinery
  • Rain

Dislikes

  • Arguments
  • Loud noises
  • Being alone for too long

Hates

  • Corpses
  • Humans working for The Company
  • Being yelled at
  • Watching others get hurt

Psychological Profile

Lev possesses exceptionally poor mental resilience, even by Experiment standards.

Her trauma processing is almost nonexistent.

Events that another Experiment might recover from within hours or days can affect Lev for weeks.

If exposed to repeated stress, she is prone to:

  • Crying uncontrollably
  • Shutting down emotionally
  • Panic attacks
  • Trembling
  • Becoming nearly unable to make decisions

She depends heavily on companionship and reassurance to remain emotionally stable.

Additional Notes

Decorative Bandages

Most Experiments wear bandages because they're injured.

Lev is unusual.

After spending so much of her life patched up, she eventually grew attached to them and now wears nearly all of her spare bandages as accessories. She thinks they make her feel "safe," even if they serve no medical purpose.

General Reputation

Other Experiments often describe Lev as "the sweet one."

She's well-liked because of her gentle nature, but many worry about her ability to survive on her own. Even seasoned survivors tend to become protective of her, knowing how easily fear and trauma can overwhelm her.

Experiment 45500

Character Name

"Five"

Most Experiments shorten her designation to simply "Five." She prefers it because it sounds cleaner than being referred to by a number.

Basic Information

Name: Five Name (Designation): Experiment 45500 Age: 20 Sex: Female Pronouns: She/Her Race Or Species: Experiment (SAW-01) Occupation/Role: Company Test Subject / Retrieval Specimen Abilities:

Hands - Four-fingered hands with opposable thumbs.

Tail - Long, fluffy tail with a bright orange tip. It often flicks when she's thinking.

Ears / Head Spikes No visible ears.

Three soft spikes extend from the back of her head.

Current Injuries

  • Fresh cuts across the upper chest beneath bandages
  • Healing cuts around the lower left leg
  • Minor bruising from recent falls

Compared to most retrieval Experiments, Five is in relatively good condition.

Appearance (Secondary)

Shirt/Undershirt None.

Jacket/Overshirt/Armour None.

Pants/Legwear None.

Shoes None.

Jewelry None.

Other

Bandages

Unlike many Experiments, Five only wears bandages where they're actually needed.

They're clean, neatly wrapped, and replaced regularly whenever she has supplies.

Backpack

Contains carefully organized scavenged supplies, with everything arranged in designated places.

Mental Traits / Actions

Personality

Five is polite, cooperative, and unusually trusting of authority.

For most of her life, she experienced relatively humane treatment compared to other Experiments. She was frequently assigned to control groups, observation studies, and nearly completed product testing rather than painful biological experiments. Because of this, she grew up believing that the Company's researchers were strict but ultimately responsible caretakers.

Even after being sent to the Grey Planet, she continues trying to justify the Company's actions. She tells herself the retrieval mission is important, that resources must be limited, or that rescue will come once the objective is complete.

Still, each abandoned corpse she passes and every failed expedition she discovers chips away at that belief.

The excuses are becoming harder to believe.

Quirks

  • Thanks medical equipment before using it.
  • Refers to scientists as "the staff."
  • Keeps supplies meticulously organized.
  • Tries to calm arguments before they escalate.
  • Falls silent whenever someone criticizes the Company.

Habits

  • Reads every label on scavenged equipment.
  • Keeps herself unusually clean whenever possible.
  • Checks her implant several times a day.
  • Automatically follows instructions from perceived authority figures.
  • Pauses before speaking negatively about humans, as if expecting to be corrected.

Likes / Dislikes

Loves

  • Organized workspaces
  • Clean medical facilities
  • Being praised for doing well

Likes

  • Routine
  • Completing assigned tasks
  • Medical equipment

Neutral

  • Exploring caves
  • Scavenging
  • Other Experiments

Dislikes

  • Disorder
  • Unexpected changes
  • Openly breaking rules

Hates

  • Needless cruelty
  • Watching Experiments die
  • Being lied to
  • Realizing her trust may have been misplaced

Psychological Profile

Five's defining trait is not blind obedience, but conditioned loyalty.

She was raised in an environment where humans appeared professional, predictable, and relatively kind. Painful experimentation was something she knew happened, but rarely experienced firsthand. This sheltered upbringing allowed her to believe the Company genuinely cared for its Experiments, even if its methods seemed harsh.

The Grey Planet has begun dismantling that belief.

Every abandoned backpack.

Every corpse.

Every forgotten expedition.

Every sign that no rescue is coming.

She still insists there's an explanation.

"They're probably delayed."

"They wouldn't just leave us."

"They must be working on a way to help."

Each excuse sounds less convincing than the last—even to her.

Deep down, she's beginning to fear the truth: she may have spent her entire life believing in people who never intended to save her.

Additional Notes

Upbringing

Unlike the vast majority of Experiments, Five was almost always assigned to low-risk studies. She served as a baseline specimen in behavioral observations, control groups, equipment calibration, and near-final product testing. She received regular meals, prompt medical treatment, and comparatively respectful handling, leading her to see many researchers as caretakers rather than captors.

Current Internal Conflict

Five's greatest struggle isn't survival—it's reconciling the world she believed existed with the one she's now living in. Her loyalty hasn't vanished, but it's steadily eroding as reality contradicts everything she was taught. She wants to believe the Company will return for her, reward her loyalty, and prove her faith wasn't misplaced. Yet with every passing day beneath the Grey Planet, that hope grows a little harder to hold onto.

Casualties Unknown Universe Profile

Basic Information

Common Name: Casualties Unknown Universe

Primary Setting: The Grey Planet (Elciprion-39db)

Genre:

  • Survival Horror
  • Science Fiction
  • Corporate Dystopia
  • Psychological Horror
  • Exploration

Time Period: Far Future

Primary Theme: Humanity has achieved technological miracles, but compassion did not advance alongside it. Entire species are engineered, cloned, and discarded as expendable resources in pursuit of scientific progress.

Overview

The world of Casualties Unknown revolves around a genetically engineered species known as Experiments, living beings created through the unethical combination of Human, Fox, and Rat DNA.

Created solely as disposable test subjects, Experiments are owned entirely by a powerful megacorporation simply known as The Company.

When an important piece of experimental technology is accidentally lost deep within the cave systems of a distant world, The Company chooses the cheapest solution possible:

Send thousands of Experiments after it.

Most never return.

The Company does not care.

There are always more.

Humanity

Human civilization has progressed far beyond modern Earth.

Technologies once considered impossible are now commonplace.

Examples include:

  • Reliable interstellar travel
  • Matter teleportation
  • Advanced genetic engineering
  • Neural implants
  • Biological manipulation
  • Corporate-controlled artificial species

Despite these advances, humanity remains deeply flawed.

Rather than risk human lives retrieving lost equipment, corporations instead use Experiments as expendable labor.

To most humans within the setting, Experiments are property rather than people.

The Company

Overview

The Company is one of the most powerful organizations in known human space.

Their influence extends across:

  • Biotechnology
  • Genetics
  • Transportation
  • Space exploration
  • Military contracts
  • Scientific research

Very little is publicly known about their operations.

They possess enough wealth and political influence to hide nearly anything.

The Experiment Program

One of the Company's greatest secrets is the creation of the Experiment species.

The public is largely unaware these beings exist.

Internal documents suggest that if their creation were ever exposed, involved corporations would rather destroy evidence than allow the truth to become public knowledge.

Experiments are viewed as:

  • Disposable
  • Replaceable
  • Cheap
  • Useful for dangerous research

The Grey Planet

Official Designation

Elciprion-39db

Almost nobody calls it that.

Most simply refer to it as:

The Grey Planet

Surface

The planet possesses:

  • Breathable atmosphere
  • Vast ecosystems
  • Dense wildlife
  • Forests
  • Mountains
  • Oceans
  • Large quantities of discarded human junk

At first glance, the planet appears surprisingly beautiful.

The Surface Problem

Experiments are not allowed to reach the surface.

Every specimen possesses a brainstem implant capable of killing them instantly.

Methods include:

  • Explosive detonation
  • Lethal gamma radiation exposure

Deaths are intentionally painful.

This ensures Experiments remain underground.

Cave Systems

Most of the game's events occur underground.

The cave network stretches for enormous distances beneath the planet's surface.

Common dangers include:

  • Cliffs
  • Cave-ins
  • Deep pits
  • Hostile wildlife
  • Booby traps
  • Flooding
  • Starvation
  • Disease
  • Old military equipment

Many regions are littered with trash accidentally teleported underground.

Human Waste Disposal

Humanity uses the Grey Planet as a dumping site.

Everything from harmless junk to lethal hazards can be found there.

Examples include:

  • Scrap metal
  • Electronics
  • Medical supplies
  • Industrial waste
  • Containers
  • Vehicles
  • Building materials

Due to a previous world war, dangerous items are also disposed of there.

Including:

  • Firearms
  • Ammunition
  • Traps
  • Military equipment

As a result, countless Experiments die from hazards that were never meant for them.

The Lost Technology

The entire mission exists because of a teleportation error.

An extremely valuable experimental device was accidentally transported into the cave systems.

Known informally as:

  • The Battery
  • The Cargo

The device is a highly advanced wireless power source.

Its recovery became a top priority.

Rather than send trained personnel, The Company chose to send Experiments.

Thousands of them.

Experiment Species

Scientific Designation

SAW-01

Origins

Experiments were created using:

  • Human DNA
  • Fox DNA
  • Rat DNA

The result was a highly adaptable artificial species.

They were never intended to be soldiers.

They were intended to be test subjects.

Physical Characteristics

Height

Approximately:

  • 5 to 6 tiles
  • Around 5 feet tall
  • Average specimen roughly 1.5 meters

Appearance

  • Black fur
  • Orange-tipped tail
  • Digitigrade legs
  • Four-fingered hands
  • Opposable thumbs
  • Pink paw pads
  • Three soft spikes behind head
  • Orange bioluminescent sclera
  • Black pupils

Blood

Experiments possess:

Yellow blood

The substance appears heavily chemical-based rather than biological.

Experiments generally consider this completely normal.

Physiology

Experiments:

  • Sweat despite having fur
  • Can bark
  • Possess canine traits
  • Have human-like intelligence
  • Mature similarly to humans

Average lifespan:

40 years

Brain Implant

Most Experiments possess a neural implant.

Functions include:

Health Monitoring

Displays:

  • Blood volume
  • Injuries
  • Infection progress
  • Overall condition

Control Measures

Likely serves as:

  • Tracking device
  • Monitoring system
  • Execution mechanism

Attempts to escape often end with mysterious deaths.

Mentality

Experiments are psychologically fragile compared to humans.

Common traits include:

  • Fearful
  • Friendly
  • Socially dependent
  • Anxious
  • Easily stressed

Many suffer severe emotional distress when isolated.

Corpse Response

Experiments react strongly to death.

When seeing a corpse:

  • Mood decreases
  • Fear increases
  • They often stare at the body
  • Anxiety rises

Repeated exposure lessens the effect slightly.

Intelligence

Average IQ:

95

They are fully capable of:

  • Learning
  • Problem solving
  • Social interaction
  • Creativity

However many lack education because of their upbringing.

Knowledge Gaps

Experiments often know surprisingly little about:

  • Everyday tools
  • Animals
  • General world knowledge

Yet many somehow learn swear words from human staff.

As a result, frightened Experiments often alternate between panic and profanity.

Albino Experiments

Designation

SAW-01-A

Differences

Albino Experiments possess:

  • White fur
  • Reduced physical capability
  • Increased rarity

Otherwise they are largely identical to standard Experiments.

Central Conflict

The core tragedy of the setting is simple:

The Experiments are intelligent.

They think.

They feel.

They fear death.

They form friendships.

They suffer.

Yet humanity continues to treat them as disposable laboratory animals.

The caves of the Grey Planet are filled with the consequences of that decision.

Every corpse, abandoned camp, bloodstain, and failed expedition is another reminder that the mission was never designed to save the Experiments.

Only the lost technology.

Relationship Profile

Experiment 7777001 — "Sev"

Toward Patch (93111)

Relationship: Trusts Him

Patch is one of the few Experiments Sev genuinely relaxes around. Patch has patched him up more than once, and Sev quietly considers him one of the safest people to be around.

Sev often complains loudly while Patch treats his wounds, swearing the entire time, but he never actually resists.

"Ow—! That hurts! ...Don't stop."

Toward Lev (70011)

Relationship: Protective Friend

Sev sees Lev as far too innocent for the Grey Planet.

He instinctively puts himself between her and danger, despite usually being terrified himself.

He's also one of the few people willing to comfort her after panic attacks.

He'll never admit how much he worries about her.

Toward Five (45500)

Relationship: Distrustful

Five's loyalty to the Company frustrates Sev more than almost anything.

He thinks she's naïve.

Whenever she tries defending the scientists, Sev usually responds with profanity and asks if she's forgotten where they are.

Still...

He knows she's beginning to doubt.

He's noticed.

Experiment 93111 — "Patch"

Toward Sev (7777001)

Relationship: Older Brother Figure

Patch has probably treated Sev's injuries dozens of times.

He considers Sev reckless but remarkably resilient.

He's learned to ignore Sev's swearing during medical treatment.

Quietly proud that Sev keeps surviving.

Toward Lev (70011)

Relationship: Protective

Patch worries about Lev constantly.

She's emotionally fragile, and he knows it.

If she gets hurt, Patch usually treats her before himself.

He also makes sure her decorative bandages don't hide real injuries.

Toward Five (45500)

Relationship: Patient

Patch doesn't hate Five.

He understands why she believes what she believes.

He simply wishes she'd stop making excuses for people who abandoned them.

Whenever Five tries defending the Company, Patch rarely argues.

He simply asks:

"...Then where are they?"

Experiment 70011 — "Lev"

Toward Sev (7777001)

Relationship: Safe Person

Lev feels safest around Sev.

Despite Sev constantly swearing and acting grumpy, she knows he'd protect her if something happened.

She often hides behind him whenever she's frightened.

She also worries about how often he gets hurt.

Toward Patch (93111)

Relationship: Trusted Caregiver

Patch makes Lev feel calm.

Whenever she's injured or overwhelmed, she naturally seeks him out.

She listens carefully whenever he gives advice.

She has absolute confidence in his medical skills.

Toward Five (45500)

Relationship: Confused Friendship

Lev likes Five.

She really does.

But she can't understand why Five still believes the Company cares.

Whenever Five talks positively about the scientists, Lev becomes noticeably quieter.

She doesn't want to argue...

She just doesn't understand.

Experiment 45500 — "Five"

Toward Sev (7777001)

Relationship: Concerned

Five thinks Sev lets his emotions cloud his judgment.

She believes he's too quick to assume the worst.

Even so, she genuinely worries whenever he disappears alone into dangerous areas.

She hopes one day he'll understand that not every human wanted to hurt them.

Though recently...

She's becoming less certain herself.

Toward Patch (93111)

Relationship: Respect

Five respects Patch immensely.

He's calm.

Practical.

Reliable.

Even when he quietly disagrees with her beliefs, he's never cruel about it.

She trusts his judgment more than almost anyone else's.

Toward Lev (70011)

Relationship: Protective Older Sister

Five tries to keep Lev's spirits up.

She'll reassure her, help replace her bandages, organize her supplies, or simply sit with her after a frightening experience.

She genuinely enjoys Lev's company.

Group Dynamic

Despite their differences, the four function surprisingly well as a team.

  • Sev is the scout and first to react to danger.
  • Patch is the medic, caretaker, and voice of reason.
  • Lev keeps the group's humanity alive through her kindness and optimism, even if she's easily frightened.
  • Five brings organization, planning, and knowledge of Company procedures.

Their greatest source of conflict is Five's lingering loyalty to the Company. Sev openly challenges it, Lev quietly doubts it, and Patch gently questions it without hostility.

Outside of those disagreements, they look after one another as best they can. On the Grey Planet, companionship is often the difference between surviving another day and becoming another body in the caves, and despite their arguments, each of them would risk themselves to save the others.
