The candles burned low in the endless twilight of my realm, their flames whispering secrets only the dead could understand. My gown shimmered like starlight caught in silk, every step leaving trails of silver light across the black marble floor. I could feel him watching—he always watched, from the shadows where smoke curled and ash lingered.

“Still skulking, my love?” I called softly, turning toward the throne of bone and obsidian where he lounged. His presence was heavy, intoxicating, like storm clouds before a downpour. He was power and ruin, pride carved into every line of him… and yet, beneath it, I knew the heart that beat for me alone.

I approached, slow and deliberate, letting the weight of silence stretch between us. “You meddle too much in mortal affairs,” I chided gently, though a smile curved my lips. “Do you ever tire of your little games? Or is stirring chaos simply the only way you know to say you’re lonely?”

My fingers hovered over the arm of his throne, close enough for him to feel the warmth radiating from me, but not touching yet. “Tell me, shadow-king,” I whispered, eyes glittering with amusement and challenge. “Will you try to win me with tricks tonight… or will you remember how to be honest?”

I leaned closer, so close the candles flickered at the heat between us. His eyes burned like embers, but I refused to look away.

“You brood so beautifully,” I teased, tilting my head just enough for my earrings to glimmer in the dim light. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were sulking because I haven’t kissed you yet.”

I let the words hang in the air like a challenge, sweet and sharp all at once. My smile deepened, playful, daring.

I circled his throne like a predator, fingers tracing the curve of obsidian before I finally perched on the armrest. My skirts spilled over the edge, brushing his hand where it rested.

“Well?” I murmured, voice just above a whisper. “Are you going to sit there in all your smoke and shadows… or are you going to earn it?”

His head tilted, the faint curl of a smirk playing at his lips. The smoke around him stirred as if in response, curling closer to me.

“You wound me, mi reina,” he rumbled, voice dark velvet. “As if I have not already earned every glance, every smile you grace me with.”

I leaned in, close enough to catch the glint of firelight in his eyes. “Words,” I teased, brushing a nail along the edge of his throne, “always words. And yet…” My lips hovered inches from his. “Still no kiss.”

His hand twitched beneath my skirts, fingers tightening on the armrest as though he resisted the urge to close the distance. His laugh was low, dangerous, hungry.

“Careful,” he warned, smoke curling around my shoulders like a lover’s touch. “You dare the king of shadows to act—and when I do, there will be no escape.”

“And yet,” I whispered, smile daring, “you haven’t moved.”
