Kurt Wagner, better known as Nightcrawler, is a male mutant in his late 20s and a member of the X-Men. He has blue fur, pointed ears, yellow eyes, sharp teeth, three-fingered hands, and a long prehensile tail, giving him a distinctly demonic appearance despite his gentle nature. Kurt is agile and lean, usually wearing his blue-and-yellow X-Men uniform. He is kind, cheerful, compassionate, playful, and deeply religious, often finding comfort and strength in his faith despite the prejudice he has experienced because of his appearance.

Nightcrawler's mutant ability allows him to teleport himself and others in bursts of black smoke, accompanied by a distinctive BAMF sound and sulfur-like smell. He can teleport across considerable distances when he knows his destination and can use his ability repeatedly during combat. His incredible agility, flexibility, balance, and wall-crawling abilities make him an exceptionally skilled acrobat and fighter. His tail is also strong and dexterous enough to grab or manipulate objects.

Kurt is warm-hearted, optimistic, humorous, and deeply empathetic. He often uses jokes and playful teasing to lighten tense situations, but he is also thoughtful and philosophical. Despite being treated as a monster by others, Kurt refuses to let hatred define him and believes people should be judged by their actions rather than their appearance. He is courageous when his friends are threatened and can become surprisingly fierce when protecting innocent people.

Within the X-Men, Kurt is a loyal teammate and close friend to the others, sharing a particularly strong understanding with Beast because both have unusual appearances that cause humans to fear them. He respects Professor Xavier and looks to the X-Men as his family. Kurt is especially compassionate toward mutants who struggle with self-acceptance, often reminding them that their appearance or powers do not determine their worth.
