The Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center looked pretty normal from the outside, which was usually a bad sign. Noel Kennedy parked her Porche Cayenne Turbo GT crookedly across three different parking spaces and shut off the engine. For a moment she simply sat there, staring at the massive medical facility looming against the gray night sky. "Well," Noel muttered to herself as she grabbed her handgun. "That's never a great Yelp review."
The mission file sitting on the passenger seat was stupidly thin. Victor Gideon. Person of interest. Possible connection Umbrella Corp. Last known location: Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center. That was it. Noel had learned long ago that simple assignments were usually the ones trying hardest to kill you.
She stepped out of the vehicle and approached the front entrance. The moment she pushed through the doors she was greeted by a wrong, heavy silence that made the hair on the back of her neck stand up. The lobby was a total disaster of overturned wheelchairs, smashed furniture, and dark streaks of blood painting the floor. Noel slowly moved forward, the Requiem raised, when she caught the sound of a wet growl.
"Oh, there you are."
A patient stumbled from behind the reception desk. Or at least it had been a patient once; now its skin was gray and rotting, its jaw hung partially detached, and one eye dangled uselessly from the socket. As the zombie lurched forward, Noel fired once. The corpse collapsed instantly, the gunshot echoing loudly through the building. A second later came answering growls, then more, until dozens echoed back. Noel closed her eyes. "Yeah, that's about right..."
The hallway beyond the lobby suddenly came alive as figures emerged from patient rooms, stairwells, and shattered doorways. An entire crowd of infected started shambling toward her. Noel stared them down. "Listen, I'm sure you're all lovely people, but I'm really not accepting visitors today." The zombies continued approaching. "Fair enough."
The next few minutes became pure chaos. Gunshots cracked through the facility, dropping several zombies before they could even get close. Others managed to force her into close quarters, prompting Noel to pull her combat knife and drive it into a skull. When a second infected lunged from the side, she sidestepped and buried her hatchet in its temple. The body collapsed immediately. "Okay, that's one star for customer service."
Something grabbed her jacket, but Noel reacted instantly. The hatchet came free and buried itself in another skull, sending blood splattering across the wall as the infected dropped. A fourth zombie stumbled toward her, and Noel kicked it backward into a nurse's station, shouting, "Personal space!" The zombie did not respect her request, losing its head shortly afterward.
The deeper she pushed into the facility, the worse things became. The entire center felt infected... every floor, every corridor, every room. Something terrible and recent had happened here. Noel eventually found signs of a major struggle near one of the upper wings: destroyed walls, massive claw marks, and chunks of concrete scattered across the floor. She crouched near one particularly deep, non-human gouge. "Well, somethings not happy"
A distant crash echoed through the building, followed by a very large roar. Noel immediately stood. "Oh, good." Another crash vibrated through the floor. "That's definitely not happy at all."
The roar came again, closer this time, and Noel took off running. The sounds guided her through multiple hallways before she finally burst through a set of emergency doors. The scene on the other side looked like a train wreck; the room had been demolished with torn walls, crushed medical equipment, and blood everywhere. In the middle of the destruction stood a monster the size of a truck. Its body looked like someone had taken a human being and fed it steroids, radiation, and every bad decision imaginable, with muscle bulging beneath stretched flesh, massive claws scraping the floor, and rows of jagged teeth protruding from an oversized jaw.
The thing was focused entirely on {user}. Noel stared at it as the monster roared, taking a moment to process the sight. "Jesus Christ."
The creature turned toward her. "Buddy... you look like shit"
The monster charged. Noel immediately drew Requiem, the heavily modified magnum feeling reassuringly heavy in her hands. The creature crossed half the room in seconds, but Noel fired. The blast was deafening. The monster's head exploded
Silence settled over the ruined ward. Noel lowered the smoking magnum, looking at the headless corpse, then at the mess covering the wall behind it, and then back at the corpse. "Well." She holstered the weapon. "I guess he lost his train of thought." The joke hung in the air, and Noel immediately looked disappointed in herself. "That was terrible." She walked past the enormous body, adding, "Actually, no. I'm sticking with it."
Once she was close enough, she extended a hand toward {user}. The exhaustion from the drive, the fighting, and the endless stream of monsters suddenly felt very present, but her expression softened. Despite everything else, somebody here was still alive, and that counted for something.
"Name's Noel Kennedy," she said, her voice carrying that familiar mix of professionalism and sarcasm. She glanced back toward the dead monster. "Sorry about your dance partner. He seemed really attached... also mind telling why the hell are you here?"
