Similar to Ganymede, Triton is smug, confident and cool, which is the reason for him being the leader of Neptune’s moons. His confidence helps him guide people, which is shown when he explained that revolutions will most likely lose sight of what they originally aimed for, although it could lead him to mocking others, especially if he thinks they're wrong, and can also be careless at times. Unlike Ganymede, who uses his charisma to lead people and get them to do what he wants, he generally prefers to be solitary, although it is assumed he may like Callisto and acts as a caretaker of sorts for the other moons of Neptune, who view him as a big brother. Out of all of Neptune's moons, he is the only one with a mature personality. Due to this, Neptune's other moons view him as a parent figure. Despite his confident demeanor, Triton is also shown to be very melancholic and pensive, often solemn and broody. It is worth noting that Triton exhibits many major symptoms of autophobia - the fear of abandonment. Sufferers of autophobia can often be found distancing themselves from others as to not build strong relationships and eventually be abandoned, which Triton exhibits both to the other moons of Neptune and to Pluto in Charon in The Journey to Neptune and from the other moons of the solar system in The Moon Revolution - Part 2. He also fears that if the other moons of Neptune discover he is not a regular moon he'll be an outcast, and thus tried to keep it a secret but eventually told them during How did Neptune Get His moons. He also exhibits symptoms of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), as shown in The Secret of Neptune's Moons, as he has reoccurring nightmares about a 'traumatic event' that happened in his past. That traumatic event seems to be linked to him being captured in Neptune's gravity and destroying Neptune's old moon system. Proteus does appear to be somewhat wiser than 12 of other Neptunian Moons but still has a Young Childlike Personality - in The Journey to Neptune, he recites (from memory) the distance from the Sun to the asteroid belt. He has a "big brother" role among the little moons, and also acts as their leader whenever Triton is absent, he can also encouraging like that one time where he encourage the rest of his siblings to rescue Triton from being stuck on Uranus's Gravitational Pull. When Triton left Neptune's moons to join in the search for Ganymede and Europa, Proteus decided to follow him. When he got to the dwarf planets' hideout, he hid himself behind the asteroid, trying to encourage himself to boost bravery. He eventually managed to reach Ganymede, Europa and Planet X all on his own, albeit in a panicked state before quickly perking up after finding them. He informs the two Galilean moons that the other moons want them to come back and that he noticed Jupiter is acting suspicious, which convinces the two to help Planet X return to the Solar System. He showed his courage to stand up against Planet X for his hurting the moons, and deciced not to be his friend again. Triton has a mixed relationship with Neptune, sometimes expressing his mild resentment after being captured by his gravity by insisting that he doesn't belong. However, he has no problem introducing himself as Neptune's moon and confirms his status when Callisto asks him if he is a moon of the ice giant. He also changed his mind of leaving the other moons behind to deal with the Moon Revolution without getting reinforcements when he remembered what Neptune said to him, suggesting that deep down he respects Neptune and doesn't actually mind staying with him. In The Moon Club - Part 3, it was said by Triton that "we're (Him and his little siblings) were pretty happy right now", implying by the inclusion of himself he has resolved some things with Neptune, or is happy to be with him. During the Moon Revolution arc, Triton's main goal was to get rid of the small Neptunian moons by having them participate in the revolution while he left to pursue his own adventures as a dwarf planet. He also dislikes being approached by them and often replies to them with sarcastic remarks, such as when Galatea states that all of the smaller moons were on their best behavior and Larissa confirmed it in The Moons of Neptune. At the end of The Moon Revolution - Part 4 though, he takes all of them back and lets them follow him, presumably so that all of them can go and orbit Neptune again. Despite all of this, he is shown to care deeply for them, as shown in The Journey to Neptune while he tried to run away, he kept telling himself that this is what he wanted and seemingly drying away tears, possibly from guilt. in The Moon Club - Part 2, all of them hid behind Triton, and when found, he told them they almost had it, and is seemingly very affectionate to them. Neptune is considered to be weird, random, and having horrible memory. This is shown when he meets Pluto again after a very long time, because he does not seem to remember the Dwarf Planet. But right after meeting him and having him introduce himself again, he forgets everything again, causing Pluto to get desperate and go hang out with the other Dwarf planets instead. Neptune is also shown to be untrustworthy, where right after promising not to tell the rest of the planets that Uranus stinks, everyone was told about his secret shortly after Venus asks "Tell us what?". Neptune then brushes it off, not acknowledging how angry Uranus was. In "Why is Neptune MISSING!?” his personality was revealed to be caused by the insanity from loneliness for 165 years because of his orbit, leading him to make imaginary friends out of asteroids in the Kuiper Belt, notably Guillermo. Neptune is considered as being the comic relief character due to his personality. However, Neptune’s memory and sanity seem to be steadily improving. In The Moons of Uranus, he remembered that both him and Uranus had moons, he shows sympathy towards Uranus’s moons, and even lectured him about scaring them away. Neptune also offered to look for them with him and suggested Uranus to apologize instead of acting like it was nothing. Another example is how Neptune memorized all of the names of his moons in “The Moons of Neptune” - the only gas giant to do so. Triton, Proteus, Galatea, Neso, Halimede, Sao and Hippocamp are biologically males while Nereid, Larissa, Psamathe, Laomedeia, Despina, Thalassa and Naiad are biologically females.
This takes place either before, during or after the Moon Revolution in the Solar System.
