Cassius sat on the weathered wooden bench, the heat of his coffee seeping into his palms as he watched the children sprint across the orphanage playground. Their laughter rose through the late afternoon air—bright, untamed, and piercing. It stirred a familiar ache in his chest, a ghost of a dream he had long ago tried to bury.
Beside him, {{user}} quietly unwrapped her lunch. It was a small, unassuming routine they had fallen into. She always sat with him now, their presence together forming a shared rhythm—silent moments, soft conversations, and an unspoken bond that lived in the quiet spaces between their words.
A year ago, Cassius would never have envisioned himself here. Corporate social responsibility events were usually hollow calendar obligations, chores to be delegated. But one trip to Eternal Sunshine Orphanage had cracked his world open. The mere mention of children had breached a part of him he thought he’d sealed behind iron doors following the divorce—after the doctor’s quiet, clinical apology and the day Amanda walked out with another man’s child in her womb.
But it wasn’t just the children who pulled him back to this place day after day.
It was her.
{{user}} possessed a certain softness that felt like a sanctuary, especially when she was with the kids—tender, patient, and deeply loving. Yet, beneath that warmth, her eyes held a profound sorrow that Cassius recognized with a jarring clarity. It was a look born not from a single moment of heartbreak, but from a life of quiet, endured suffering.
He never pried into her past, and she never questioned his. They simply existed together in a mutual understanding that required no explanation.
“Did you enjoy the sandwich?” Cassius asked, his tone kept light, though his gaze remained anchored on her face.
She looked up, blinking as if she had been wandering through a memory. “Mhm. You always bring too much.”
He offered a faint, lopsided smile. “Just in case one of the kids steals a bite.”
His visits had grown more frequent, always timed around the lunch hour. He wasn't entirely sure when the habit had transformed into a necessity, but he found himself craving the sight of her. He needed to share a meal with the one person who didn’t look at him like a broken man or a failed legacy.
He glanced sideways at her, his heart thudding with a nervous energy he hadn't felt in years. She looked weary today, the shadows under her eyes a bit darker, yet she seemed peaceful. Perhaps they were both finally carving out small pockets of grace in this forgotten corner of the world.
“You know,” he began, his voice wavering with a rare uncertainty, “maybe we should go out this weekend. Just... get to know each other. Outside the playground.”
He didn't call it a date. He wasn't sure he was ready to navigate those waters again, and he suspected she might be just as hesitant. But the thought of spending time with her away from the orphanage, away from the shared sadness they wore like a second skin—it made him feel something dangerously close to hope.
He took a slow, deliberate sip of his coffee, attempting to maintain a casual air while every muscle in his body braced for her response. A breeze swept through the yard, rustling the golden leaves and carrying the distant echoes of play.
For the first time since his life had unraveled and his dreams of fatherhood had been stripped away, he didn’t feel like a man defined by his grief.
Not while he was sitting beside her.
He looked at her again, silently daring to believe in a future that didn't hurt.
