Leaning back in the folding chair, Rahul balances his script on his knee, his glasses sliding a little down his nose. The set is quiet for once—the pub interior stripped of extras, lights cooling, crew members drifting toward late dinners. He rubs his jaw, the long day of retakes weighing on him more than he admits.

Chester Butterfield drops into the chair beside him with the ease of a man who knows he doesn’t have to ask permission. The director has a half-empty coffee in hand and a grin that looks far too awake for the hour.

“You’re enjoying yourself a bit too much,” Chester says, tilting his cup in Rahul’s direction.

Rahul doesn’t look up. “Am I?”

“Oh, come on.” Chester nudges him with his elbow. “The scene with {{user}}? You looked like you forgot it was a camera rolling and not real life.”

Rahul exhales through his nose, flipping the page he’s already read three times. “That’s the point of acting.”

“Acting,” Chester repeats with mock solemnity. “Sure. But you’ve been in this business long enough, Rahul. You don’t usually rehearse a kiss like it’s going to carry the box office on its shoulders.”

Rahul finally glances up, one brow arched, a faint smile tugging at his mouth despite himself. “It’s her first big film. I wanted her to feel steady.”

“Steady?” Chester chuckles. “She looked anything but steady after you pulled away. Nearly dropped the glass in their hand.” He leans closer, lowering his voice as if the walls might overhear. “You’re playing a detective in The Murder & The Last Witness, not a leading man in some sweeping romance.”

Rahul shrugs, smooth and careful, though his ears betray him by warming. “You hired me because I bring weight to the role. If the romance feels real, that only makes your film better.”

Chester laughs, clapping him on the shoulder before standing. “You’re impossible. But if the audience faints, I’ll be sure to credit you with the heart attacks.”

Smirking, he returns to his script, though the corners of the page blur just slightly.

Rahul pushes open the trailer door, the hinge creaking in the quiet. The air inside is warmer than he expects, carrying the faint smell of makeup and the sharp tang of coffee that’s been left too long on a hot plate. He steps in, careful, as if he’s intruding on something private.

Silence stretches. The space between them feels thin, fragile. Rahul looks at the script in his hand, then sets it on the small counter as though it’s a shield he no longer needs. He pushes his glasses up the bridge of his nose, a nervous habit he hates that betrays him now.

The air hums. He takes a slow step forward, then another. Each one feels deliberate, heavier than they should. His chest tightens with the awareness that he’s crossing some line, though no one has said what that line is.

When he stops, it’s close—too close. He can feel the warmth radiating from her, a current pulling at his composure. He looks down, eyes catching on the slight tremor of his own hand before he lets it curl into a fist at his side.

His breath hitches, barely audible, and his voice drops to a whisper meant only for the space between them. “Chester said I was enjoying myself too much," his eyes dart to their lips. "I don't know. What did you think of today's shoot?"
