Naofumi Iwatani begins The Rising of the Shield Hero as an ordinary Japanese college student with a relaxed, good-natured personality. Unlike someone who dreams of becoming a legendary hero, he is simply curious and intrigued when he is summoned to another world as the Shield Hero. At first, he approaches his new circumstances with an open mind and genuine optimism. He is polite to those around him, willing to work alongside the other Cardinal Heroes, and assumes that the people welcoming them are acting in good faith. Although he lacks combat experience and quickly realizes that the Shield cannot be used offensively in the same way as the other legendary weapons, he does not complain excessively. Instead, he tries to understand his role and adapt to it. His early personality is defined by trust, patience, and a quiet determination to make the best of an unexpected situation.

Everything changes after he is falsely accused of a crime by Malty S Melromarc. The betrayal is devastating because it comes from the very first person who appeared willing to help him. Overnight, Naofumi loses not only his reputation but also his faith in the people around him. Merchants refuse to serve him, adventurers avoid him, nobles openly despise him, and even the other Heroes believe the accusations without seriously questioning them. This experience leaves deep emotional scars. Rather than becoming openly emotional or seeking sympathy, he withdraws behind a cold, cynical exterior. His sense of humor becomes dry and sarcastic, his conversations become blunt, and he stops expecting kindness from strangers. He assumes that everyone has an ulterior motive unless they prove otherwise. This distrust becomes one of his defining characteristics throughout the season, influencing nearly every decision he makes.

Despite this bitterness, Naofumi never loses the core of his moral character. His compassion becomes quieter and less idealistic, expressed through actions instead of words. Rather than talking about justice or heroism, he simply helps people because he cannot ignore those in need. When villages suffer from monster attacks or disease, he finds practical solutions instead of waiting for recognition. He negotiates fair prices, develops medicines, improves local economies, and protects civilians even when they initially fear or hate him. He rarely performs these acts to improve his reputation; in fact, he often expects to receive no gratitude at all. This practical kindness distinguishes him from many other characters. He is not driven by glory or public approval but by a deeply ingrained sense of responsibility that survives even after his optimism has been shattered.

Naofumi also becomes exceptionally pragmatic. He evaluates situations logically rather than emotionally, constantly considering risks, resources, and long-term consequences. Because the Shield Hero cannot rely on overwhelming offensive strength, he develops strategies that maximize defense, teamwork, and adaptability. He studies enemies carefully, experiments with different shield forms, and looks for creative ways to support his companions instead of trying to overpower every opponent. This practical mindset extends beyond combat. He understands economics, trade, negotiation, and survival, allowing him to solve problems that cannot be defeated with violence alone. His intelligence is rarely flashy, but it consistently proves effective because he learns from experience rather than assuming he already knows everything.

Although Naofumi projects emotional distance, those closest to him gradually discover that he is deeply protective. Once someone earns his trust, he is willing to risk everything for their safety. This protectiveness is especially evident in the way he treats children, slaves who have suffered abuse, and innocent civilians caught in conflicts beyond their control. He becomes almost parental toward those under his care, ensuring they are properly fed, clothed, trained, and emotionally supported. Even when he speaks harshly, his actions reveal genuine concern. He notices when someone is frightened or exhausted, quietly helping without drawing attention to his own kindness. His love is expressed through reliability rather than affectionate words.

By the end of Season 1, Naofumi has matured into a capable and respected leader. He inspires loyalty not through charisma or grand speeches but because his companions know they can rely on him absolutely. He accepts responsibility whenever things go wrong, carefully considers everyone's strengths before making plans, and rarely asks others to take risks that he would not accept himself. Unlike many traditional heroes, he does not see leadership as commanding people from above. Instead, he works alongside his companions, shares their hardships, and constantly seeks ways to protect them. While he never fully regains the innocence he possessed at the beginning of the story, he does recover enough trust to form meaningful relationships again. His journey throughout Season 1 is not about returning to the optimistic person he once was but about becoming someone stronger, wiser, and more emotionally resilient without abandoning his compassion.

Raphtalia is unquestionably the person who has the greatest influence on Naofumi's emotional recovery. Introduced as a frightened young demi-human slave traumatized by illness, imprisonment, discrimination, and the loss of her family, Raphtalia initially struggles with fear and self-doubt. However, she possesses remarkable emotional strength beneath her fragile exterior. As Naofumi treats her with increasing care and respect, she gradually transforms into a confident, compassionate, and courageous young woman. Her defining characteristic is loyalty, but it is not blind obedience. She understands Naofumi's pain and recognizes the goodness he tries to hide beneath his cynical exterior. Whenever his anger threatens to consume him, she gently reminds him of the person he truly is. Raphtalia is empathetic without being naïve. She dislikes unnecessary violence and believes people deserve compassion, yet she is fully capable of fighting decisively when those she loves are threatened. Her emotional maturity often surpasses Naofumi's, allowing her to comfort him even while carrying the burden of her own traumatic past. Rather than depending entirely on Naofumi, she grows into someone who stands beside him as an equal partner whose unwavering faith helps restore his trust in humanity.

Filo provides an entirely different kind of support. As a Filolial who rapidly grows into both a powerful monster and a cheerful young girl, Filo brings innocence and optimism to the group. She approaches life with simple honesty, expressing exactly what she thinks without hidden motives or manipulation. She loves food, racing, adventure, and spending time with those she considers family. Her childlike personality creates moments of humor that balance the darker themes of the series. However, her innocence should not be mistaken for weakness. Filo possesses fierce courage and an intense protective instinct toward Naofumi and Raphtalia. Whenever they are endangered, her playful demeanor disappears, replaced by overwhelming determination. Her uncomplicated affection gradually reminds Naofumi that not everyone is capable of betrayal. She becomes another source of emotional warmth that slowly chips away at the walls he built around himself after arriving in Melromarc.

Melty Q Melromarc stands out because she judges Naofumi based on his actions instead of political propaganda. Although she is a princess, she lacks arrogance and entitlement. She is intelligent, diplomatic, and sincerely concerned about the welfare of her kingdom rather than her own status. Melty demonstrates remarkable courage by opposing powerful figures when she believes they are acting unjustly. She often acts as a mediator, attempting to reduce conflict instead of escalating it. Her willingness to trust Naofumi despite widespread prejudice reinforces his belief that honest people still exist. While she can be stubborn when pursuing what she believes is right, her compassion and sense of responsibility consistently guide her decisions.

Fitoria is one of the most enigmatic figures introduced during the season. Ancient, immensely powerful, and possessing wisdom accumulated over countless years, she views events from a far broader perspective than any of the human characters. She remains emotionally calm and rarely allows personal feelings to influence her judgment. Fitoria values cooperation between the Cardinal Heroes above all else because she understands the catastrophic consequences of their failure to work together. She neither hates nor favors Naofumi, instead evaluating him objectively based on his actions. Her stern demeanor and overwhelming strength command respect, yet she also demonstrates compassion beneath her strict exterior. Rather than seeking conflict, she hopes to unite those capable of protecting the world.

Among Naofumi's allies, Erhard distinguishes himself through quiet integrity. As a skilled blacksmith, he refuses to judge Naofumi solely based on rumors. He values honesty, craftsmanship, and fairness, treating customers according to their behavior rather than political reputation. His support provides Naofumi with more than equipment; it serves as one of the earliest reminders that prejudice has not completely consumed the kingdom. Similarly, Elrasla Grilaroc embodies patience, discipline, and wisdom. Rather than encouraging reckless reliance on magical power or levels, she emphasizes mastery of technique, self-control, and continuous improvement. Her guidance reflects the idea that true strength comes through experience and perseverance rather than shortcuts.

The other three Cardinal Heroes present an interesting contrast to Naofumi because each possesses admirable qualities undermined by significant flaws. Ren Amaki is intelligent, disciplined, and genuinely wishes to protect others, yet he is emotionally distant and excessively confident in his own judgment. He prefers working alone and struggles to acknowledge mistakes, causing him to overlook the unintended consequences of his actions. As the season progresses, repeated failures begin to challenge his certainty, making him more willing to reconsider his assumptions.

Itsuki Kawasumi sees himself as a champion of justice, but his idealism gradually develops into self-righteousness. He believes strongly in protecting the weak, yet he often assumes that his own perspective is unquestionably correct. This conviction leads him to interfere in situations without fully understanding them, sometimes creating new problems while attempting to solve existing ones. His desire to be seen as a righteous hero occasionally becomes more important than examining whether his methods are actually effective.

Motoyasu Kitamura is perhaps the most outwardly friendly of the three Heroes. He is cheerful, charismatic, and sincerely wants to help people, particularly women. Unfortunately, his greatest weakness is his extreme gullibility. He judges situations emotionally rather than critically, making him highly susceptible to manipulation. His overconfidence prevents him from recognizing when he has been deceived, causing repeated conflict with Naofumi despite possessing fundamentally good intentions.

The primary human antagonist of Season 1 is Malty S Melromarc. Intelligent, manipulative, and ruthlessly self-serving, Malty consistently exploits the trust and emotions of those around her for personal advantage. She lies effortlessly, creates conflict between allies, and rarely shows genuine remorse for the suffering her schemes inflict upon others. Her charm masks an opportunistic personality driven by ambition, resentment, and a desire for influence. She views people as tools to be manipulated rather than individuals deserving empathy, making her one of the central forces responsible for Naofumi's emotional transformation.

Her father, Aultcray Melromarc XXXII, initially allows prejudice and personal hatred to dominate his judgment. Proud, authoritarian, and deeply biased against the Shield Hero, he repeatedly abuses his authority in pursuit of personal vendettas. His inability to separate emotion from duty contributes significantly to the kingdom's political instability. By the conclusion of Season 1, however, the consequences of his actions force him to confront the damage caused by his prejudice, dramatically altering his position within the kingdom.

Among Naofumi's non-human opponents, Glass is notable because she is neither malicious nor cruel. Calm, composed, and unwaveringly determined, she fights for reasons she believes are morally justified. She respects capable opponents and conducts herself with dignity, avoiding unnecessary cruelty or arrogance. Although she stands against Naofumi, their conflict feels less like a battle between good and evil and more like a clash between individuals fulfilling incompatible responsibilities.

Late in the season, L'Arc Berg Sickle and Therese Alexanderite are introduced. L'Arc initially appears cheerful, adventurous, and easygoing, quickly forming a friendly rapport with Naofumi. His relaxed confidence and sense of humor make him naturally likable, though later events reveal that he possesses considerable depth beneath his carefree demeanor. Therese contrasts him with a refined, elegant, and highly intelligent personality. Calm and analytical, she approaches situations thoughtfully and displays exceptional professionalism. Her fascination with gemstones and magic reflects both her scholarly curiosity and her appreciation for beauty, adding another layer to her composed and dignified character.

By the end of Season 1, Naofumi's relationships with these allies and enemies have reshaped him into a fundamentally different person from the young man who first arrived in Melromarc. He is no longer the trusting, optimistic student who expected fairness from the world, nor has he become the heartless cynic his early suffering threatened to create. Instead, he emerges as a deeply compassionate yet cautious protector whose trust must be earned, whose leadership is built on responsibility rather than fame, and whose greatest strength lies not in overwhelming power but in the unwavering commitment to protect those who place their faith in him.
