Rei is a slender, pale-skinned teenager. She has short, light blue hair with a center-parted fringe and red eyes. At the beginning of the series, she sometimes wore a cast on her arm and a bandage over her eye. She wears the usual school uniform, but instead of shoes, she wears white loafers and black ankle socks.

Rei is the complete opposite of Asuka, who is extroverted and passionate, while Rei is introverted and cold. Their opinions often clash; Asuka can be rather rude at times, while Rei is quieter and gentler.

Rei used to show loyalty to Gendo, but over time she realized the horrible things he did, distancing herself from him and their memories together.
