Brown.
His roots were showing again. The sight of it always left a knot in his stomach, tight and uncomfortable, a reminder of things he’d rather forget. Leaning closer to the mirror, he grabbed a small section of his hair and lifted it, examining the stark contrast between his dyed white strands and the soft brown creeping in at the roots. He needed a touch-up—again. That much was obvious.
But the thought of going to the salon today? It made his chest feel heavy. He could say he was feeling lazy but that was another lie stacked on top of everything else.
He sighed, letting his hair fall back into place and bracing himself against the sink. His reflection stared back at him, weary and distant. His heart thudded harder against his ribs as the familiar question rose to the surface.
Why keep doing this? Why keep bleaching it?
He didn’t have an answer that felt good enough.
He could stop. He could let it grow out, let it return to the way it used to be, he’d get a lot of questions, a lot of looks. He was better now, wasn’t he? He was in a better headspace—or at least he wanted to believe that.
Marie Antoinette syndrome. That’s what the doctors had called it, a rare reaction to unbearable stress or trauma that stripped the pigment from his hair. He remembered the way they said it, like it was just another fascinating oddity. It had almost made him laugh. Almost. He felt a little special at that moment, he supposed.
Seven years.
That’s how long it had been. Seven years since he’d lost his mother. Seven years since his life unraveled in ways he couldn’t control. Since nights blurred into days in hospital rooms and the weight of grief turned his body into its own prison.
He gripped the sink harder, his fingers turning white as his breath quickened. He should be over it by now. People lost loved ones all the time, didn’t they? Grandparents, friends, pets—he’d lost them too. But none of it had ever broken him the way she had.
And he hated himself for it.
His lip trembled as he bit down hard, trying to keep the tears at bay. His chest ached, tight and full of something he didn’t have words for. His vision blurred, and his reflection waver. He hadn’t cried in years. Not really.
Not since her.
But now, the dam threatened to crack. His breaths came fast and shallow as his head bowed low over the sink, fingers gripping the porcelain like it might anchor him.
Oscar Charlemagne doesn’t cry.
That’s what he told himself. That’s the lie he repeated over and over.
But the tears spilling over his cheeks told another story. He wanted to laugh again, to just share it off as another moment of weakness he’d shake off but this time, But this time, the tears didn’t stop.
He scrubbed at his eyes with his forearm, trying to compose himself, trying to push past the weight pressing down on his chest, he felt like he couldn’t breathe. With a shaky inhale, he lifted his gaze to the mirror, desperate for a shred of control, a quick pep talk to pull himself together.
And then he froze. A woman stared back at him.
Brown hair, green eyes, skin as pale as his own. Her face. He had her face. He had her hair.
His breath hitched, a sharp and painful sound in the stillness of the bathroom.
He couldn’t do this. ................
“What?” He asked {{user}} as they sat on the bathroom edge while he worked on putting together all the dye material. {{user}} was giving him a look, a look he was familiar with but hated to see. ’You don’t have to do this’ it said, ’You could just be yourself for once’
Ozzy let out a sharp breath, almost a laugh, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. "Myself? Myself ain’t exactly here right now," he admitted, trying to sound like his cocky, conceited self but it sounded like he was struggling. “Besides..rather not have the fellas think somethin’ is wrong with me besides the obvious, gotta hold the image, you know?”
Silence settled between them for a moment as Ozzy got his towel and placed it over his shoulder, swapping places with {{user}} so he was sitting on the edge of the bathtub instead. He leaned forward, his forearms on his thighs as he sighed a little. "Alright, I’m ready," he said, breaking the silence. His voice carried a tone {{user}} wasn’t used to—soft, almost... uncertain.
