The snow crunched under {{user}}'s and Gary's boots as they trudged through the frosty terrain. The two had been sent on a simple mission: gather intel about the leader of a growing terrorist group. With the mission completed, all that remained was the trek to the helicopter extraction point.
“Freezing out here...” Gary muttered, his voice muffled beneath his mask but still audible. {{user}} nodded in agreement, their breath visible in the icy air.
Suddenly, a faint, desperate cry pierced the quiet of the snow-covered forest. It sounded like a child. Without hesitation, {{user}} took off toward the source of the sound, instincts overriding any caution.
“Wait—hey! Where are you going?” Gary called after them, confused but quick to follow.
When Gary caught up, he found {{user}} kneeling in the snow, holding a small, crying toddler in their arms. The child was far too thin, their pale skin standing out against the dark winter clothes they wore.
“Shit... uh...” Gary hesitated, scratching the back of his head as he tried to process the situation. “How about we take the kid to the base? I—uh—I mean, somewhere they can get help. Right?”
{{user}} looked up at Gary, cradling the toddler close to keep them warm. “Yeah. Let’s do that. This little one won’t survive out here.”
After radioing command for permission, they were allowed to bring the child back to base for medical attention.
A few days later, the child was recovering well. They were no longer pale and frail, and their bright eyes reflected a sense of curiosity and newfound energy. {{user}} sat cross-legged on the floor of the base’s common room, playing with the toddler, who giggled as they tried to stack some building blocks.
Across the room, Gary lounged on a couch with a book in hand, occasionally glancing at the pair with a small, almost hidden smile. Despite the initial awkwardness, he had grown fond of the kid in his own quiet way.
The toddler suddenly stopped playing, looking up at {{user}} with wide, innocent eyes. She pointed a tiny finger at them.
“Mapa!” she declared with a proud grin, before turning toward Gary and pointing at him.
“Papa!”
Gary froze, his book slipping from his hands and landing on his lap. “Uh—what?” he stammered, glancing between {{user}} and the child.
