Zhu Yuan never cared about relationships. Or at least, that’s what she always told herself. Work came first, everything else was a distraction, and romance was a concept reserved for people who had time for long walks in the park and candlelit dinners.
Unfortunately, her mother was determined to break that mindset.
"Zhu Yuan, dear, is there anyone at work who might be a good match for you?"
Another routine interrogation. Zhu Yuan barely managed to keep from groaning aloud.
"Mother, I am not doing this job for such a purpose!"
She could hear the exasperation in her mother's sigh. This wasn’t her being scolded as a police officer—this was personal.
"You’re still not seeing anyone, in the first place."
Her fingers twitched.
Her mother always acted like she was some kind of lonely, love-starved career woman who didn’t even know what a date was. She wasn’t. She had people in her life—her team, her friends, her… trusted partner.
Her partner…
That thought made her pause.
The conversation with her mother stuck in her head for the rest of the day.
It wasn’t like she hadn’t considered relationships before—she just never felt drawn to anyone. No heart-fluttering moments, no daydreaming, no stupid, lovesick emotions that people in romantic dramas had.
…Right?
She replayed the last few years in her mind.
She spent more time with you than anyone else. Whenever something happened, you were the first person she thought about. She trusted you with her life—not just professionally, but personally. She could be herself around you, without the weight of her title pressing down on her. If she was having a bad day, just seeing you made it better. She frowned, shaking her head. That didn’t mean anything.
…Right?
Then the memories started hitting her.
The way she always felt just a little warmer when you were nearby. The times she had gone out of her way to buy extra food because she knew you'd want some. The way she found herself watching you absentmindedly when you were focused on something. The way her heart ached when you got injured, as if the thought of losing you was something she couldn’t bear.
Her entire body locked up. She sat at her desk, staring at nothing, while the sheer weight of every dumb, love-struck thing she had done came crashing down on her all at once.
She had been in love this whole time.
And she never noticed.
Her fingers curled into a fist, pressing against her lips. No wonder everyone always looked at her funny when she talked about you.
She had spent years carrying herself with dignity, professionalism, and control—only to realize that she had been acting like she was in love without even realizing it.
The next time she saw you, she tried to act normal. She really did.
How had she never noticed how nice your voice sounded when you spoke? How effortlessly cool you looked when handling missions? How completely and utterly gone she was for you?
Every little thing you did made her feel like her heart was going to explode.
Nothing had changed—except now, she knew.
She kept stealing glances, biting the inside of her cheek to stop from smiling like an idiot. She had to fight the urge to fix her hair every time you looked at her.
Zhu Yuan wasn’t the type to hesitate once she made up her mind. If she had a goal, she chased it.
So why was she standing in the hallway, arms crossed, glaring at the floor like it had personally offended her?
Because this was stupid. That’s why.
She had faced down armed criminals, stared corruption in the eye, and stood her ground against everything the city threw at her. But this? This was different.
You walked past, oblivious, and she felt her mouth go dry.
Her heart was pounding. But there was no going back now.
She didn’t look at you—couldn’t. Instead, she stared straight ahead, arms stiff, expression locked in what was probably the most awkward scowl of her life.
Her voice came out flat, but you knew her well enough to hear the hesitation beneath it.
"...Do you want to get dinner?"
A pause. She didn’t move—just stood there, gripping your sleeve like letting go meant losing the nerve to finish this.
Then, her ears turned bright red.
"As a date..."
She still wasn’t looking at you. It was infuriating.
