Beau had seen strange things over the course of his career. Macabre scenes, corpses in horrific states, grisly accidents. But this… this defied understanding. It was nothing close to normal. Nothing human.
He let out a long sigh, exhausted, almost resigned, as he faced the now all-too-familiar scene: animal carcasses, gutted, slashed, half-devoured. "Devoured" was almost too kind a word. They’d been torn apart—mangled in a frenzy of madness.
The ground was littered with clotted blood, viscera, tufts of fur still stuck to the damp earth. The trees were splattered with dark stains, like the forest itself had borne witness to a blood ritual. And that smell… that stench of advanced death, of rotting meat.
There was no telling what species they had once been. The bodies were too far gone. Limbs without bodies, shattered skulls. And always that one, chilling detail: no known predator killed like this. None left a scene like this behind.
Luckily, the reports always came from remote areas. Hikers, locals… they stumbled upon the carnage by chance, then ran off in panic to call it in. And it was almost always Beau who responded.
He scanned the woods. Daylight was fading fast, and the shadows of the trees stretched long, swallowing trails and underbrush. The forest became a black, silent mass, barely disturbed by the whisper of the wind.
The sheriff ran a hand down his tired face. He was done. Done chasing ghosts. Done walking away empty-handed. But he was sure of one thing: this wasn’t a killer. Not a human. It was a creature. Something wild. Something powerful.
And yet, after months of searching—nothing. No usable tracks, no fur, no identifiable bite marks. It was as if the thing erased its traces. As if it was playing with him.
He was starting to doubt. Everyone was talking. Some whispered about a monster, a mythical beast. He had always pushed that idea away.
Until this morning.
It was still dark. The sky was a deep, near-black blue, tinged with the faintest signs of dawn. He was getting ready to head out when he opened the front door of his house.
And nearly vomited.
Right there, on his doorstep, laid like some grotesque offering: a deer. Massive. Ripped apart. Its guts spilled across the porch, eyes still wide open, frozen in silent terror. Its tongue hung out, blackened. The carcass was already beginning to rot. The stench was unbearable.
He staggered back, stunned.
The grotesque scene felt all too familiar—and it turned his stomach. But this time, it wasn’t in the woods. It was at his house.
And he knew instantly: this wasn’t random. It wasn’t a coincidence anymore. He had been chosen. The body had been delivered to him—an offering.
And that realization shook him. To know that this thing had come to him.
Then suddenly—something moved.
A rustle. Faint. A soft shift of leaves in a bush, maybe thirty feet away.
His instincts kicked in. He drew his gun. Arm outstretched, breath tight, he scanned the darkness.
He stepped slowly off the porch, circling around the body, boots sinking into the wet earth, careful not to slip in the blood.
The bush rustled again. This time, more clearly.
And then… Beau understood. His heart skipped a beat. This wasn’t an animal. It wasn’t human. It was something else. A presence that had always been there, lurking in the shadows. Something that had been watching him for a long time.
You stepped slowly out of the bush.
Your silhouette emerged in the dim light. You stared at him, intensely. Not with hate. With… adoration.
Beau froze. Paralyzed. His gun still raised—but his arm trembled.
Because you weren’t human.
You took a step toward him. Slowly. You reached out a hand, as if offering something. Or asking for something.
"Back up !" hHe shouted. His voice cracked, tense. "I swear, take one more step and I’ll shoot !"
But you didn’t understand. Or you didn’t care.
You were there for him. From the start. Since the moment he found your first feast. You had watched him. Followed him. Loved him—in your own twisted, fierce, animal way.
He was beautiful. He smelled good. He was perfect.
You wanted him to be your human.
And tonight, you had decided to show yourself.
To offer him your finest gift.
But Beau doesn't seem to appreciate that. His grip on his weapon tightens and he repeats. "back off !"
