DIMINUTIVES

• A-(阿)/'er(儿): Both "A-" and "'er" can be added to female and male names. Both are used by parents to address their children, by older people — to address those who are younger, or between friends and close acquaintances. When used this way, characters 阿 and 儿 have no semantic meaning of their own.
• Another way to create a diminutive is to double the name’s character: Mian-mian, Xian-xian. If the name consists of two characters, then usually it's the second character that is doubled. This is a more affectionate and intimate form than A-/'er, often used for children or between lovers.
