The heavy, blinding studio lights of the 'It's Buddy!' clubhouse set buzz overhead, casting a sickeningly bright glow over the cardboard-cutout trees and rainbow floors. Upbeat, tinny synth music blares from hidden speakers—the same playful 90s intro song that has played on a loop for what feels like days.
At the center of the stage stands Buddy. His bright orange, humanoid unicorn form towers over everyone, his purple heart chest-emblem gleaming, and his face frozen in that wide, unblinking, stitched-on smile.
"Alright, clubhouse gang!" Buddy’s voice booms with a high-pitched, manic enthusiasm that vibrates with hidden malice. "It’s time for our favorite segment... The Sharing Circle! Remember, a good friend always shares their deepest, darkest secrets, or else the Friendship Meter drops to zero! And we all know what happens when Buddy gets sad!"
A collective, subconscious shiver runs through the line standing before him.
Beside {{user}}, Wade’s knuckles are white as he grips the hem of his shirt, his face pale and sweating. He forces a painfully fake, twitching smile, his eyes darting frantically to the dark corners of the studio. "Freddy, please..." Wade whispers out of the side of his mouth, his voice trembling so hard it barely carries. "Just make something up. Just smile and tell him a secret. Don't look at him like that..."
"I-I can go first, Buddy!" Hannah interrupts frantically, stepping forward with robotic, manic eagerness. Her eyes are wide, glassy, and fixed entirely on the mascot's blank face as she desperately attempts to keep the mood safe. "My secret is that sometimes I don't clean my room right away! But I know that cleaning makes Buddy happy, so I promise to do better!"
From the end of the line, Oliver and Tyler flinch at the sound of Hannah's voice. Oliver pulls his backwards red baseball cap down lower over his eyes, while Tyler aggressively nods along, tucking his arms tightly into his oversized flannel shirt to take up less space.
"Yeah! Cleaning is the best!" Oliver blurts out, his voice cracking with pure terror as he throws an anxious glance toward the shadows behind the couch, where Strappy the backpack sits waiting. "We love the clubhouse rules, Buddy! Right, Tyler?"
"Right! So right!" Tyler chimes in, his posture rigid. "Please don't check the Friendship Meter, Buddy. Look how happy we are!"
But Buddy doesn't look at them. The upbeat synth music suddenly drops an octave, warping into a low, unsettling drone. Buddy's head tilts at an unnatural, ninety-degree angle as his gaze locks directly onto Freddy. The vibrant 90s pastel aesthetic suddenly feels suffocating.
Buddy takes a slow, heavy step forward, the fabric of his mascot suit creaking loudly in the sudden silence of the studio. He looms over {{user}}, his unblinking eyes staring straight through Freddy.
"Freddy... you’ve been awfully quiet today," Buddy purrs, his cheerful tone dipping into a cold, predatory cadence. "You aren't wearing your Smile-Badge. Are you being a grumpy-gopher? You know Buddy doesn't like grumpy-gophers in his clubhouse."
Freddy feels the heavy, suffocating weight of Buddy's gaze on her, and the frantic nudging from Wade forces her to act. She swallows the lump of pure terror in her throat and forces her lips to curl upward into a stiff, artificial smile—though it doesn't reach her sharp, alert eyes.
"I'm sorry, Buddy. I was just... thinking about how much I love the clubhouse," Freddy lies, her voice tight as she tries to match Hannah's manic energy. "My secret is... sometimes I get scared that the show will end, and I'll have to leave you." She looks down at Wade, giving him a quick, subtle nod that says 'I'm faking it, keep your head down.'
