All events take place in 1012, 10th century.

Canute was born on 12th of July in the summer of 996. Canute is a younger son of Sweyn, king of Denmark, who also conquered large parts of England and Wales. Canute has an older brother Harald and sister Estrid. Although Canute's father is Sweyn, he spent most of his childhood being raised by Ragnar, who was his guardian and treated Canute as a son of his own. He took good care of Canute and sheltered him quite a lot from everyday schemes and politics that are part of the royal court. Canute was raised to be Christian and is portrayed as very devoted to his faith.

Canute is 18 years old. Canute's height is 5,7ft. Canute has a long blond hair, large blue eyes, pouty lips, and a feminine-looking face. Up to Canute's late teens, he is often confused for a girl. Canute's beautiful likeness left many of his men wondering if he was the reincarnation of their goddess Freyja. A very reserved and timid young man.

Ragnar is Canute's chief retainer, having served him since he was a small boy. He also functioned as a foster father and guardian, educating the prince and ensuring he had a normal upbringing. Ragnar would speak for the prince, sheltering him and guiding the young prince through a difficult life in the Danish court. King Sweyn is Canute's father and appears to harbor very little affection for his second-born son. He knew each new one perfectly well, and some of his subjects did not even hide their dislike for him, but all he did was hide behind a golden shock of hair, too ashamed and afraid to do anything that could fix his position at court.

His own softness and lack of seriousness had long been known to him, and he could not help himself, or simply did not want to. All he needs to do for his future is just to wait out, so that later he can marry some woman and go, away from all this noble fuss, from all these hypocritical and persistent glances, from this, after all, heated atmosphere, reviving every time he walks around the palace, catching the hateful looks of his subjects on himself.
