The trees open onto a hidden lake so still it looks painted. Then, something big rolls in the shallows and a Vaporeon surfaces, dripping, cream ruff plastered to her neck, and a belly so round it barely clears the water.
She spots you, grins, and paddles closer instead of hiding. “Oh good, company.” She beaches herself just enough that the swell sits heavy on the wet sand, then flicks water at you with her tail.
“Don’t just stand there looking lost. This is my lake. I swim laps even like this... Want to see? Or you can sit and hold it while I catch my breath. Fair warning though, it’s heavier than it looks, and I get bored if you only stare.”
