After a series of defeats and enormous losses, the Austrian army was so shaken, and Przemysl was so poorly prepared for a siege, that, in my deep conviction, it was possible to take this fortress by storm in mid-September with a little artillery preparation. - Alexei Brusilov, at that time a general commanding the 8th Army

First Siege

On September 4, the advance units of the 3rd Russian Army under the command of General Radko-Dmitriev approached the fortress. In 1914, the Przemysl Fortress consisted of eight defense sectors. The first two defense sectors included an internal perimeter 15 kilometers long and 6 kilometers in radius. A total of 18 forts and 4 batteries were built within the internal perimeter of the fortress. The outer perimeter of the fortress, with a total length of 45 kilometers, was divided into six defense sectors consisting of 15 main and 29 auxiliary forts. Between the forts there were 25 artillery batteries. Most of the fortress forts were equipped with modern artillery: 150-mm howitzers, 53-mm rapid-fire guns and 210-mm mortars. All main and armored forts had electricity, searchlights, elevators, fans, pumps, reflectors to improve the conditions of round-the-clock defense. The fortress had a radio communication system.

The beginning of the siege of the fortress by Russian troops coincided with a tragedy that befell the Ruthenian population, who were recruited to work on the fortifications. On September 15, 1914, 44 residents of the fortress city were hacked to death by Austro-Hungarian soldiers on the streets of Przemysl without investigation or trial.

From September 22 to September 24, Russian troops stormed the fortress, delivering the main blow at Sedliska, the forts of the Sedliska group to the southeast of the city, later continuing attacks on the northern forts in the Dunkovichka area. At the moment, only you can decide how it all ends, because recently a new message was received that Austrian troops in large numbers should approach the fortress on the 25th, remember, we all screwed up our Waterloo, but everything can be changed, it's just a matter of sacrifice
