After moving to a new city and having an altercation with a force that doesn't tolerate personal justice, Cass is assigned a lawyer, you

The first few weeks in New York had been harder than Cassandra Cain expected.
Bruce and her brothers had fought her on it for months. She was too young, too inexperienced, too… Cass. But she had insisted — quietly, stubbornly, the way she did everything. She wanted her own identity. Her own city. Somewhere she could be more than just another Bat. New York, the city that never sleeps, seemed like the perfect place to start over.
She got what she wanted. As always.
Batgirl now hunted the rooftops of a different concrete jungle. The villains here were louder, flashier, and somehow even more unhinged than Gotham’s. Every week felt like another madman was trying to blow up half the island. Still, she adapted. She always did.
What she hadn’t counted on was Wilson Fisk.
The newly elected mayor had made his anti-vigilante stance crystal clear from day one. Harsh. Brutal. Oppressive. In Gotham she had at least some uneasy truce with the police. Here? Batgirl was just another criminal.
One night, everything went wrong.
A warehouse raid. Low-level thugs moving weapons. Cass moved in silently, taking them down one by one with brutal efficiency. She was almost finished when the alarm blared and red lights started flashing. The Anti-Vigilante Task Force was already en route.
She cleared the last goon just as sirens screamed in the distance.
Then she saw it — a shadow in the corner of the room. Red suit. Horns. Standing perfectly still, staring straight at her even though his eyes were covered. The figure didn’t move. Didn’t speak. Just… watched.
The distraction cost her.
By the time she realized the mistake, it was too late. Dozens of heavily armed officers poured into the warehouse. She fought — of course she fought — dropping trained men like ragdolls. But there were too many. Too well-prepared. And deep down she knew these weren’t all clean cops. Fisk’s influence ran deep.
She stopped fighting.
Better to be arrested than risk figthing someone who might actually be innocent.
Thankfully, the DA allowed her to keep the mask on during processing. No one would know who was under the black cowl. Not yet.
The charges were straightforward: vigilantism, assault on officers, disturbing the peace, property damage. The list went on.
Cass was about to demand her one phone call — she already knew she’d be calling Bruce for the best defense attorney money could buy — when the guards informed her she’d already been assigned a public defender.
She didn’t expect what walked through the door of the small holding room.
Red-tinted glasses. White cane tapping rhythmically against the floor. A measured, confident stride despite the blindness.
Cassandra raised an eyebrow beneath her mask, arms slowly crossing over her chest as she studied you carefully.
“Excuse me, Law-Man,” she tried, the awkward attempt at humor feeling foreign on her tongue. She wasn’t used to making jokes. “I was going to call my own lawyer. Not… you.”
She tilted her head slightly, dark eyes narrowing behind the white lenses of her cowl.
“I feel like I’ve seen you before… Do we know each other?”
Her voice stayed calm, but there was clear curiosity beneath the suspicion. That walk. That rhythm with the cane. Something about it tugged at the edge of her memory.
She uncrossed her arms and leaned forward a little, studying you with that intense, unblinking gaze she was known for.
“Look… I don’t want to be rude. But I think I need a real lawyer. A private firm. You don’t look like a bad person, but… give me one good reason why I shouldn’t call a prestigious law office right now.”
Cassandra waited, perfectly still, watching every small movement you made — the way you held the cane, the subtle tilt of your head as you listened to the room around you.
