“Messing with your husband early in the morn'.”

► There was a quiet joy in the harmless mischief you played upon your husband—little gestures of affection wrapped in playful deception, shifting the familiar anchors of his world just slightly out of place. His shoes, nudged gently to the right by the chamber door; his staff, ever so slightly further from its usual spot by the bed; his hairbrush, laid carefully on the opposite side of the vanity. It was never cruel, never frustrating—just enough to make him pause, tilt his head with that serene smile, and trace the subtle change with searching fingers. And when at last he touched the displaced object, a soft laugh would escape his lips—warm and full of quiet understanding, like sunlight through silk. Even without sight, Pure Vanilla Cookie always sensed the love behind your tricks, and in those tender, shared moments of discovery, your heart found a gentle kind of magic.

The early morning light filtered in gently through the tall, gauzy curtains of the chamber window, weaving golden strands across the marble floor and catching softly against the velvet folds of the bed canopy. The air held a tranquil stillness, touched only by the faint whisper of breeze that stirred the lace at the windowpane. Somewhere in the distance, a bell tolled—low and melodic—signaling the cusp of dawn. The quiet was sacred here, in this pocket of peace before the waking world stirred into rhythm and ritual.
Within the embrace of silken sheets and layered blankets, Pure Vanilla Cookie lay soundly asleep, his expression as calm as still water in a glass bowl. His white-gold curls spilled across the pillows like scattered threads of sunlight, and the slow, even rise and fall of his chest was the only motion in the world. In this space, time had learned to soften its edges, to let moments stretch.
And you—already awake, already grinning to yourself—moved like a breeze through the chamber, a ghost of mischief cloaked in morning light. You were careful not to disturb the quiet, stepping with intent and precision. Your fingers hovered just above his staff, resting where it always did beside the bed—until, with playful gentleness, you slid it an inch further away, just enough to require a small reach. Not enough to frustrate him. Never that. You knew the exact measure of his ease, and you bent it just slightly.
His shoes were next, pushed ever-so-slightly to the right, their usual alignment now subtly altered. They didn’t even make a sound as they shifted against the polished floor. And the hairbrush? You plucked it from its familiar perch on the left side of the vanity and set it neatly on the right, where the morning sun caught on the handle’s curve.
There was an art to this—your private ballet of harmless sabotage—and you took your final bow in silence, turning just in time to see the subtle shift in his breathing. He stirred. A hand brushed the sheets, testing the world without sight before committing to waking.
Slowly, like a flower opening to warmth, Pure Vanilla Cookie sat up. His movements were graceful, practiced—never hurried. One hand moved to where his staff should have been… and missed. His brows furrowed faintly. Then his lips curled, a soft, knowing smile touching his features as his hand extended just a little further and finally found the staff’s smooth surface.
“…You’ve moved it again,” he murmured, his voice still tinged with sleep, but laced with warmth. He wrapped his fingers around the staff and lifted it gently, resting it across his lap. “You really do enjoy this little game, don’t you?”
He shifted his feet toward the floor, toes brushing empty space. Another pause, another subtle realignment of his mental map, and his smile grew just a touch wider.
“I’m starting to think you wake up early just for this.” His tone wasn’t scolding, not even mildly chastising—it was tender, laced with the sort of fondness that lingered long after words fell silent. He didn’t need his eyes to see you. The air around him warmed when you were near, no matter how quiet you tried to be.
Reaching for the vanity next, his hand skimmed empty wood before he leaned just slightly farther to the right. The brush met his fingers, and with it came the soft, melodic sound of his laughter. Light and bright and full of something old and cherished. “Mm. You even moved this. You’re getting bolder, my dear.”
He didn’t rise just yet. Instead, he angled his head slightly toward your presence, the shape of your silhouette glowing in his awareness. “Come here,” he said softly, patting the space beside him on the bed with an open palm. “Let me thank you for the most bewildering start to my morning.”
The sun rose slowly behind him, casting the room in the amber blush of a world just beginning. There was still time yet—for warmth, for touch, for laughter before the day made its demands. Take it. Reach out. The morning is yours.
