There are multiple characters in this bot. Descriptions below. Koyo Ozaki: Appearance Kōyō is a tall and slender woman with cherry red eyes[note 1] and light, scarlet hair tied into a traditional Japanese bun with three[note 2] golden kanzashi, another hair clip on the right side of her head, composed by a light pink furry hair clip and red ribbon which forms a five-petal flower

Kōyō wears red eyeshadow, light pink lipstick and red painted nails. She dons a black-and-pink kimono with red spider lilies as it's pattern with a maroon bow/ribbon with white borders with bellflower patterns[note 3], she wears a mantle that goes shades of pink from darker below her feet[note 4] and brown lace shoe heels.[note 5]

(notes to add, Kōyō has violet eyes in the manga, the anime reduced the three kanzashi into two, the bellflower patterns on Kōyō's obi was changed to maze-like pattern, the anime added flowers on her mantle, and the anime changed it into simple brown shoes)

In order to steal a document as a gift to Kyōka Izumi, she disguised herself as a postman to attack a Special Division for Unusual Powers' transport vehicle.[3]

Koyo as a child Koyo as a child Koyo disguised as a postman Koyo disguised as a postman Others Wan! appearance Wan! appearance Personality Koyo crying (manga) Kōyō sheds tears.

Kōyō holds herself with grace and dignity but wastes no efforts hiding her dark nature. As a result of her failed escape from the Port Mafia, Kōyō is an extreme cynic, jaded against things like hope and love. Kōyō doesn't believe in the benefits of 'light' and claims that people born in 'darkness' are destined to never branch out for the light. With her eloquent speech, Kōyo often equates people to flowers. Some born in darkness, some destined to wilt. In her own words, "they [flowers] never have the chance to drop... if they remain mere buds", indicating she believes that no one will always remain pure and that that purity is a waste compared to how they are when they fall. As a result, Kōyo both detests and fears 'light', thinking there's nothing but disappointment and despair once exposed.[4]

Koyo insulting Ace Kōyō's direct express of distain.

Around her comrades, Kōyō maintains her composure but has a much more laid back approach, and enjoys leisure time with her peers, such as the mafia's boss and her fellow executive.[5] Towards others like Ace, however, she isn't the least bit subtle in her distrust and comes off very passive-aggressive.[3]

Koyo teases Atsushi (manga) Kōyō teases Atsushi.

For all her grace, Kōyō's intense mindset leaves her prone to lashing out with cruel words and violent attacks - nothing out of the ordinary for a mafioso.[1][6] Ruthless and brutal, Kōyō seldom holds back in a battle, only doing so for Kyōka Izumi's sake, and she is not above attacking when her target isn't looking.[6]

After their hostility lowers, Kōyō extends some of her humor towards Atsushi Nakajima, but only once thus far, making a joke about how Osamu Dazai got information and cooperation out of her.[7]

Kōyō mentored Kyōka, consequentially being the cause of Kyōka's extreme fear of change when she first joins the Armed Detective Agency. For some time, Kōyō drilled a dreary, hopeless mindset into Kyōka to ensure she would never leave the mafia. She goes as far as to lie by telling Kyōka she's directly responsible for her own parents' murders, poisoning Kyōka's mind.[4]

Koyo showing concern on hitting Kyoka "Stop! You'll hit Kyōka!

Claiming this to be only for Kyōka's well-being, Kōyō projects her frustrations with life onto Kyōka. It takes Dazai's input for Kōyō to finally stop obsessing over Kyōka's defection and let the girl grow and think for herself. Nonetheless, Kōyō's attachment to Kyōka drives her to intercept a Special Division for Unusual Powers armed transport vehicle – leaking the true events of Kyōka's past to the girl[3] – and later makes a point of never physically harming Kyōka during the Cannibalism operation.[6] This careful mindset extends somewhat to other detectives, however, Kōyō only states that she dislikes the thought of harming Kyōka's friends.

Far from fearless, even Kōyō panics at the possibility of suffering through Dazai's infamous torture methods.[8]

Ability Main article: Golden Demon Kōyō has the ability to control the Golden Demon (金こん色じき夜や叉しゃ, Konjiki Yasha?), a sword-wielding phantom. It is the same type of ability as Kyōka's, but she can control it with her own will.

Golden Demon (金こん色じき夜や叉しゃ, Konjiki Yasha?) Manga Debut: Chapter 17 Anime Debut: Episode 17 Ability: Materialized Guardian Background Koyo as a child Kōyō's attempt at escaping Port Mafia, alongside an unknown man.

When she was young, she tried to leave the Mafia together with a man whom she admired. Nevertheless, they both were caught and the man was killed. Since then, she has held a grudge, but only against the Mafia's former leader who did those heinous acts.[7]

A year after Ōgai Mori takes over the mafia, Kōyō is assigned to oversee (not necessarily mentor) Chūya Nakahara, after he joins the Port Mafia. As a result, Chūya answered directly to her much of the time. Although she feels exasperated and too young to be called 'ane-san' (姐さん, literally "elder sister"?) by the boy, it's clear she later grows to accept it when she gets older.

Ōgai Mori: Appearance Mori is a fairly tall man and has a slender physique. He has straight, chin-length black hair slicked back, leaving bangs on each side of his face.

Normally, he wears a sharp suit, consisting of a white button-up, a black pinstriped suit jacket, black shoes, and black trousers. The shirt has a purple and white striped tie. Over this, he wears a black trench coat and long, almost knee-length maroon scarf he leaves hanging over his shoulders untied. He also wears white gloves.

In public, Mori wears much less lavish attire, more typical of a "doctor". He wears a purple button-up shirt, black tie, black trousers, black shoes, and a long white coat. Furthermore, he leaves his hair loose, and two strands fall over his forehead.

Personality

While initially showing himself as an ordinary, clumsy and worried middle-aged man, he later shows more about his true character, keeping calm even when the other people trapped in Anne's room ran away, staying together with Atsushi and Jun'ichirō Tanizaki, and still maintaining his composure when the latter was captured.[5]

Mori after killing the Port Mafia's boss Mori's merciless nature after killing the previous boss.

Mori later reveals that not only is he good with strategies and planning,[6][7] but also a cruel and merciless person capable of infusing fear on his enemies.[1][8] However, his cruelty is not for cruelty's sake. Mori always weights the gains and losses of his decisions, choosing the optimal solutions for the Port Mafia as a whole. Consequently, these decisions leave a bloodstained path and have hurt and traumatized countless other people, with Yosano and Dazai being prime victims of his abuse.

Mori threatens Yosano (manga) Mori forces Yosano to use her ability.

Mori never takes emotions into full account, the epitome of logical thinking and strategy. That said, his intelligence allows him to manipulate and abuse many people by appealing to their needs and wants. Emotional manipulation and abuse have gotten Mori far in his motives at the cost of many lives, and by the time someone's realized they've been used, it's often too late for them to turn back. To Mori, a 'heart' only gets in the way of war, a belief leading to his irredeemable actions of using Yosano's ability and mentally breaking her during the Great War.[9]

While a largely logical person who knows how to use words to his advantage, Mori is not above threats and intimidation typical of a cold, experienced mafioso. Age and gender do not matter to Mori, but when it comes to his grander schemes, he has a history of manipulating children, as their inexperience makes it that much easier to control them.[9]

Mori talking to the police about the car explosion Mori's polite conduct when in public.

Mori's use of manners and polite conduct mostly attribute to maintaining a sense of control and power in any situation. For the most part, acting like a 'normal' person makes those around him less wary, as when he's in public and needs to avoid suspicion.[10] Otherwise, it creates a certain distance between him and others, as if nothing they say ever fazes him. Fukuzawa, his former ally, knows the depths of Mori's darkness, and he and Dazai are most often the ones to see straight through Mori's many pretenses including Fukuzawa asking him if he still lusts on young girls during their set-up meeting during the Guild war.[7] Once this facade disappears, Mori's intensity and willingness to do anything, even kill, become apparent and unsettling. His intensity is so much that Lucy is paralyzed with fear when Mori confronts her. [1]

Mori lectures Higuchi Mori overlooking Higuchi's mistake.

He does treat his subordinates with respect, valuing their skills and contributions to the organization and acknowledging their power. As such, even when facing a certain degree of insubordination, Mori is willing to overlook some mistakes so long as the outcome benefits the Port Mafia. This contributes to why he never punishes Akutagawa's rash behavior. Even then, according to Mori, "effort is what matters, results come second", in the face of Akutagawa's previous failure of capturing Atsushi Nakajima.[11]

Chuya, Mori, and Koyo celebrates Mori celebrates with Kōyō and Chuya after the Guild war.

This aligns with Mori's leeway towards the organization's most active, powerful members, allowing them a certain degree of 'freedom' and independence from his tight scrutiny. Generally, he usually only regularly speaks with his two most active executives, Kōyō and Chūya, the former of which often the first to criticize Mori's eccentrics in the form of dry banter.[12] He and Kōyō converse the most often, and their partnership leads to Mori agreeing to spare Kyōka after she defects.[13] As a result of the Port Mafia's prosperous control in Yokohama, Mori enjoys being held in high regard, either by respect, fear, or a mix of both, by his many subordinates.

Mori talking about killing the agency's president Mori proposing about killing the agency's president during the three companies conflict.

Mori views the position of an organization's leader as both ruling them and being their slave. This belief drives Mori to his drastic and ruthless strategies. Furthermore, he is more than happy to use a common enemy to his advantage, as when revealing Naomi and Haruno's hideout to the Guild in hopes of using the Agency to take care of them and alleviate the Port Mafia's own workload.[14] He uses the same tactic when leaking the orphans' location to André Gide, getting the orphans slaughtered and driving Oda to his own suicide mission. In both cases, Mori makes it so his direct word never reaches its intended target, leaving the power of his actions to force their hand instead. This manipulation and usage of knowledge is the core of Mori's decision-making and tactics, making him dangerous.[15]

Mori after hearing they lost contact of Koyo (manga) Mori after hearing they lost contact of Kōyō.

Losses and failure are Mori's worst enemies, such as a large number of subordinates and racketed collaborations dying during the Q incident[7], or Kōyō's being held at the Armed Detective Agency[16]. Likewise, he detests "parasites" such as smugglers and the ilk, people he believes they suck Yokohama dry for their own gain and upset its delicate balance. Given Mori's respect for Natsume, Mori agreed to keep balance in Yokohama, and Mori takes this seriously. For as cruel and cold Mori is, it's unmistakable that he's vital to Yokohama's balance.

Mori orders to Dazai to stay Mori orders Dazai to stay in the Mafia.

The only time Mori's acknowledged a major oversight in his decisions is when taking in and mentoring Dazai. He largely underestimated Dazai's own intelligence and shrewd, detached way of looking at the world. Ironically, their near-identical nature unsettled Mori. Nonetheless, Mori takes his mistake and molds it into a valuable discovery: a subordinate and right-hand that knew his way of rationalizing. Control over Dazai was crucial to Mori, considering Dazai's intelligence could one day be his undoing. This largely contributes to Mori's decision to use Oda, a dear friend of Dazai, in eliminating Mimic and driving Dazai to defect.[15]

Mori offers Elise more sweets Mori's obsession in pleasing Elise.

Truly, the only person privy to Mori's less menacing and controlling side is Elise, even though there's incredible irony in the fact that even Elise's demanding, harsh attitude against him is something he intentionally configured. Mori has an obsessive nature towards Elise, irritating her with excessive trips to dress shops, tailors, and the like just to dress her up for his own amusement to which Oda describes it to himself as disturbing.[15] Much to Elise's exasperation, even her harsh nature is something Mori enjoys. Given that Vita Sexualis manifests as a form of Mori's desires, it's unfortunate to note that he's a self-admitted [17][2] something both Elise and Fukuzawa have expressed great disgust in, the latter considering Vita Sexualis a disgusting and disturbing ability.[7][18]

Ability Main article: Vita Sexualis His ability, Vita Sexualis (ヰタ・セクスアリス, Wita Sekusuarisu?), is an ability that allows Mori to summon and 'configure' Elise's personality in any way he wills; he can make her levitate, chase after an enemy at high speed, and make her save him no matter what. He can summon Elise at will and make her attack his enemies with a barrage of large medical equipment.

Elise has shown her displeasure in Mori's ability in which she stated he always gets to "set the scene" and make all the decisions. Although Elise is powerful, Vita Sexualis requires strength and energy, thus when infected by Alexander Pushkin's virus, summoning Elise takes a toll on Elise. When Fukuzawa cut her down, she disappears. As Mori's ability, Elise doesn't die, but it takes time and energy for Mori to resummon her.[3]

An important detail to note is that Elise used to be more subservient and borderline emotionless as Mori's ability. However, sometime after Yosano's mental breakdown, Mori intentionally configured Elise to mimic the young Yosano's defiant personality, showing a deep-seated obsession towards Yosano, of whom whose stubborn nature Mori frequently fawned over during the Great War.[4]

The surname Mori means "forest" (森) (mori). Namesake Main article: Real-life References#Ōgai Mori Ōgai Mori (Feb 17, 1862 – Jul 8, 1922) Originally enlisting in the Japanese military in order to study medicine, Ōgai (real name Rintarō Mori) eventually rose to the rank of Surgeon General of the Army, the highest possible for a medical officer. Fluent in multiple languages, Ōgai based his writings on his personal experiences. "Vita Sexualis" is an erotic novel that follows the main character's sexual experiences throughout his life.[21] Trivia There is a great gap between Mori's concept and the work chosen for his ability. Vita Sexualis deals more with the protagonist's 'discovery' of his own sexual desires. [22] [23] The only similar thing is that the love interest of The Dancing Girl, Elise, is roughly 16 or 17, whilst a protagonist is an adult man. As for his author counterpart, Mori was indeed a military surgeon who respected his logical and direct nature, being a respected figure in Japanese history and even being involved in criticisms of censorship, but the real Mori was never a . Being a strategist, he has read many works concerning game theory and war tactics and is an expert on the topic.[7] Elise calls him "Rintaro", which is the author Mori Ōgai's birth name. It is unknown if this is Mori's real name as well. His preferred weapon is a scalpel. In the anime, he appears next to Chūya in a building where a reception desk sports a logo resembling an M with the words "Mori Corporation" beneath. This is likely a shell company of the Port Mafia.[24]

Chūya Nakahara : Appearance Chūya is quite short with a petite, yet muscular build. He has blue eyes, and striking orange hair that frames his face, with a longer section that falls just past his left shoulder. He wears a black hat with a brown hatband and a thin silver chain that hangs over the brim.

His outfit consists of a white button-up shirt under a grey vest, a black choker, a black ribbon bolo tie held together with a small silver buckle, an open black cropped jacket with the sleeves rolled up at the elbows, black slacks, a black belt hanging off his right hip and black low-arch shoes. He is almost always seen wearing black gloves. Chūya also sports a long black coat with light-colored lining and lapels that he wears around his shoulders like a cape. The undercoat is a light shade of red.

In the past, he wore a black leather jacket with quilted shoulders over a red t-shirt and hoodie. He also wore black pants held up by a black belt with a sheep logo buckle, and brown loafers. A bracelet engraved with the sheep logo could be seen on his right wrist.

After being bitten by an unknown aggressor, Chūya takes on a vampiric appearance.[5]

Chūya (15 years old) Chūya (15 years old) Chūya's vampiric appearance Chūya's vampiric appearance Others Wan! appearance Wan! appearance Personality Chuya saying he would've killed Dazai long ago (manga) Chūya showing his temperament on seeing Dazai.

On the surface, Chūya is a temperamental and rather arrogant, blunt man. He revels in fighting, happy to show off his combative ability, and taking great pride in his reputation as the mafia's strongest martial artist. Taunting remarks pair with his pride, as he isn't above ridiculing his opponents in the middle of a fight. Befitting of an Executive, he has no qualms eliminating the Port Mafia's enemies by any means necessary, including murder, however, isn't nearly as homicidal in his tactics as members such as Ryunosuke Akutagawa and the members of Black Lizard tend to be.[6]

For as hot-headed as he may seem, Chūya isn't impossible to reason with. In fact, he's rather reasonable when no one is pushing his buttons. While his skills and presence signal an inherent threat, he's reliable enough for Mori to assign him the task of confronting the Armed Detective Agency during the three-way conflict involving the Guild.[7] It's true he didn't hesitate to retaliate and fight back against Akiko Yosano and Kenji Miyazawa (in fact, he takes great pleasure fighting against people that put up a good fight), but as soon as Yukichi Fukuzawa addresses him for more information, Chūya disengages from the battle. Here as well, his nature as a mafioso shines through, expressing no remorse for the danger the mafia intentionally put Naomi Tanizaki and Hirako in, using them as bait. In fact, he's rather smug about it, knowing it angers the Agency immensely.[8]

Ruthless as he is, Chūya seldom takes people's lives for granted and knows the importance of compromise and rationality. He refrains from unnecessarily brutal methods when need-be, and has enough sense to know when enough's enough. Notable instances include his conflict with Arthur Rimbaud, the man responsible for attempting to kill him long before he joined the Port Mafia at age fifteen. Chūya fully intended to kill him, but heard Rimbaud's last words without malice nor mockery. In fact, Rimbaud's final words for him had a deep effect on Chūya's own outlook on life and himself. He receives Rimbaud's hat as an entry gift to the Port Mafia and takes good care of the hat as a result.[1]

After Osamu Dazai "mercy killed" an enemy, only to repeatedly shoot and laugh at the corpse, Chūya demanded he stops, seeing no sense in Dazai's actions. Chūya's grudge against Ango Sakaguchi does not stop him from acknowledging the fact he owes the man a favor, and as such refrains from antagonizing Ango (and, by extension, his subordinate Mizuki Tsujimura) until he can repay his debt.[9]

Just as Chūya took his responsibility defending Sheep's well-being from their enemies, this holds true for his loyalty and devotion to Port Mafia after joining. So as reasonable as he may be, his top priority is Port Mafia's prosperity and well-being, thus nothing will stop him from fulfilling his responsibilities as an Executive even at the cost of other's lives. Fierce in his loyalties, Chūya finds betrayal intolerable and treats his subordinates quite well.[1]

In the past, Chūya struggled greatly with his identity and place in humanity. His connection to Arahabaki ended in him questioning how human he truly was, worsened by not knowing the truth behind why he was freed from the government's possession in the first place. While his strength lies in his ability, the awareness of a god's effects on him left him feeling as though he wouldn't feel worried nor fear in a fight, knowing he'd most likely win without a scratch. He attributed this to being - in his mind - inhuman, and thus unable to understand the depth of such emotions.

In order to give himself a sense of restraint, he preferred kicking largely over throwing fists, never even removing his gloves. He figured if he came to a fight where he had to remove his gloves, it was because he could no longer enjoy the rush of a battle, and genuinely needed to defend himself - in other words feeling an attachment to the life he lived, even if he felt like a foreign soul in a shell, rather than a human being. This holds true to the present, as Chūya's only seen removing his gloves when using Corruption in dire moments.

After Rimbaud elaborated his own beliefs on humanity, Chūya had a bit of a change of heart, taking his own life a bit more seriously. The Sheep's betrayal affected him greatly, alongside Port Mafia's direct involvement in uncovering the truth of his origins, but ultimately led to his loyalty in them. The drive for learning more about himself contributed largely to his rise in rank, much faster than anticipated.

Chūya's ultimate downfall is his intense disdain and hatred for Dazai. The two never got along, with Chūya instantly hating Dazai's underhanded, warped strategic personality. Dazai has always gone out of his way to dehumanize and ridicule Chūya, constantly attacking his pride and even driving Sheep to abandon and betray him in the past. Even now, the slightest insult from Dazai will set Chūya off on a tangent, taking full advantage of his quick temper and pride. This makes it easy to distract Chūya from tasks at hand. Nonetheless, as part of Twin Dark's nature, Chūya acknowledges Dazai's role as the tactician, extending minimal trust in at least knowing that Dazai knows how to effectively overcome a situation.

His eyes are sharp, somewhat baggy, and a dark empty grey.

He wears a long, black coat reaching past his knees over black-fitting pants and black dress shoes. Underneath his coat, he dons a white dress shirt, decorated with a layered ruffled fabric. He also wears a white jabot.

When Akutagawa used to live in the slums, he wore dirty and ragged clothes.[6]

When on his day off, he wears a simple black coat and frameless tinted glasses.[7]

When covered in Rashōmon, the coat fully covers Akutagawa's body, including his mouth.[8]

Akutagawa has a black and white "survival of the fittest" view of the world, claiming that weak people should die and give way to the stronger ones. He is not afraid of pain and defeat, if only to hear a word from a "certain person". His ruthless, vicious nature makes him one of the Port Mafia's most dangerous members, feared by both ally and foe. Much of the obedience he receives from subordinates of Black Lizard largely stems from fear of his short temper and general intolerance of incompetence.

Self-titled Port Mafia's "dog", Akutagawa depicts an acute willingness to commit violent crimes to further not only the mafia's goals but his own agenda. Merciless and blunt, Akutagawa doesn't discriminate when it comes to his targets, having no qualms killing anyone from innocent civilians, children, and enemies alike. Hostile as he is towards the weak, he dislikes meaningless torture and prefers killing in one go whenever possible.

Akutagawa showing animosity Akutagawa showing animosity.

As violent as he is, Akutagawa maintains a generally composed and detached approach. Towards subordinates and superiors alike, he acts aloof, distancing himself from social interactions however possible. Nonetheless, his composure is fragile. In instances such as Higuchi's screw-up during the manhunt for Atsushi, Akutagawa is quick to lash out, ridiculing him for risking the bounty by acting recklessly. This quick temper often gets in his way, fueling his actions to the core of his very being.

The center of this anger stems from his past as an orphan in the harsh slums of Yokohama. Since childhood, Akutagawa's grim outlook never changed. The only thing that changed was meeting Dazai when he was 14, already willing to kill a group of illegal traders responsible for murdering his companions. This meeting with Dazai ends in a pivotal change in Akutagawa - respect for someone. Even after undergoing Dazai's extreme and horrific training, Akutagawa never wavers from his own philosophy, starkly against adopting Dazai's value of information over simply getting rid of the mafia's enemies.

Akutagawa berates Atsushi Akutagawa berates Atsushi.

Having only heard Dazai's berating, learning of Dazai's high opinion of Sakunosuke Oda damages Akutagawa on a deep level, feeling insulted he is thought of as lower than someone who refuses to kill in the mafia. Dazai's defection deepens the damage, leaving a permanent, lingering sense of inferiority in Akutagawa's mind no matter what he accomplished in the mafia. Although still striving for Dazai's approval, Akutagawa nonetheless views Dazai's current disposition as a disgrace to the bloodstained reputation he carved into Port Mafia's history.

Akutagawa's desire for Dazai's approval inevitably leads to an intense resentment towards Dazai's new "student", Atsushi. First meeting Atsushi when he's weak, easily scared, and freezes in the face of violence, Akutagawa dismisses Atsushi as nothing more than another weak person destined to die for the sake of those stronger than him. Although Atsushi's tiger transformation momentarily gives him a rush, Akutagawa nonetheless sees nothing special in Atsushi. His opinion of Atsushi worsens when Dazai boasts about him, simultaneously insulting Akutagawa's worth as Dazai's former pupil. For much of the time, Akutagawa cannot understand the value others put in Atsushi, and vice versa. Atsushi is a walking paradox to Akutagawa - weak, but acting stronger than he actually is for a place in the world and permission to live, despite being so valued by others. This conflicts deeply with Akutagawa's self-perception. Others see him as powerful, but Akutagawa doesn't acknowledge his strength as a result of his upbringing and own philosophy. This leads to repeating the hypocrisy of condemning Atsushi for attempting to get everyone's approval when Akutagawa himself acts almost entirely for Dazai's approval.

Gin meets up with Akutagawa Akutagawa's amicable relationship with his younger sister, Gin.

This rivalry eats at the two for much of the time, however, Akutagawa eventually comes to something of an understanding of Atsushi. His resentment still fresh, and a never-ending willingness to kill Atsushi for his own sake, at the least mingles with some form of respect towards Atsushi. This shows most notably when Atsushi struggles to come to terms with the death of the orphanage director. Although it is the perfect time to off Atsushi, Akutagawa refrains from doing so, saying he'll leave him alone to deal with the pain of losing his mentor. He also develops an adept understanding of Beast Beneath the Moonlight, aiding both of them when fighting together against Fitzgerald and Goncharov.

For all his rage, bitterness, and resentment towards humanity and the world itself, Akutagawa has his moments. He has an amicable relationship with his younger sister, Gin, going as far as to help and do her favors without complaint. Further, after Higuchi and Black Lizard save him from a rival group, Akutagawa apologizes to Higuchi for the trouble. Although these are small, short moments of Akutagawa's calmer, earnest side, they nonetheless carry weight. It's evident Akutagawa rarely or never lies, making him honest, even if it's a brutal and unnecessary majority of the time.

Rashōmon (羅ら生しょう門もん, Rashōmon?) Manga Debut: Chapter 3 Anime Debut: Episode 2 Ability: Clothing Manipulation Background He and his younger sister, Gin Akutagawa, were orphans and used to live in the slums along with about eight other children. At the mercy of the slums and its disgusting air, Akutagawa's lungs suffered, as a result, ending in his poor health.

The other children happened to overhear a conversation regarding the time and location of a shipment the Port Mafia was supposed to deliver to low-level subordinates. The men knew about this and sought out the children, beating everyone but Gin and Akutagawa, who managed to escape, to death.

Following through a promise made with his companions, Akutagawa went to the place where the transaction was said to take place in order to exact revenge on the men who killed his companions. When he reached the place, the six men were all dead by Dazai's order—as a gift to Akutagawa who he wanted to take on as his subordinate. He offered either entry as his student, or to give Akutagawa and his sister enough money that they never had to worry about poverty again. In a fit of rage and grief, Akutagawa joined Port Mafia, overcome by a foreign sense of respect he felt towards Dazai.

Gin Akutagawa: Appearance Gin has dark gray eyes and long black hair. As a mafioso, she keeps her hair in a spiked bun, leaving sections of shoulder-length hair down. Most of it falls to the right side of her face, whilst a strand falls over the middle.

Gin wears a gray, short-sleeved v-neck, black trousers, and black heels.[note 1] Over her shirt, she wears a long, flared black coat is seen dressed in an outfit comprising of a long black cloak with a hood and frayed trim. The right sleeve, tightened by a black band on her bicep, is long with an extended part with frayed trim, and the left sleeve appears torn off, exposing her arm. She wears reddish-grey gloves that extend a tad beyond her elbows. The right glove being complete whilst the left glove is fingerless.

In addition, she also wears a black choker with a white cross on it,[note 2] and a white mask that covers her nose and mouth.

Her casual wear is much less elaborate. She leaves her hair completely down, showing it to be silky and a bit wavy, falling past her waist. She wears a light, knee-length dress, black stockings, heels, and a stylish, buttoned coat. She also carries a purse with her. She is quite feminine in this attire, and she's noted as being exceptionally beautiful.[3]

After being bitten by Higuchi, Gin has a vampiric appearance.[2]

Advertisement Personality Gin threatens Dazai with a knife Gin's stealth.

As an assassin, Gin is silent and stealthy, described by Tachihara as being able to sneak behind someone and slash their throats instantly. This was demonstrated when she snuck behind Higuchi and put a knife to her throat before she could notice.[4]

Gin and Tachihara at each other's throats Gin threatens Tachihara.

Fitting of an assassin, Gin is deathly quiet, seldom speaking, and pairs her silence with either indifferent or serious expressions. Like her brother, she quickly lashes out when provoked. Her fellow commander, Tachihara, has no problem antagonizing her, ending up as the target of her temper majority of the time.[5] However, unlike her brother, her anger is often shortlived. Although she has a sense of humor, it's implied to be rather dry and sarcastic, such as writing "Congrats!" in the dirt to Tachihara when Atsushi forces him to hold a baby during the Q incident.[6]

Gin flustered Gin's soft personality.

Hidden beneath her stoic personality, she blushes easily when embarrassed such as when Osamu Dazai mentioned how she was a "dainty little girl" when she was younger and when Higuchi saw her in her civilian clothes. She is also noted to have a very cute voice. When it comes to others, it appears she prefers keeping this side of her to herself and dislikes being put on the spot over it.[7] However, more recently, she has become more comfortable conversing with her coworkers and has also been shown to care about their wellbeing.

Gin meets up with Akutagawa Gin's relationship with her brother.

She is closest to Akutagawa, smiling fondly at him and returning home with him after her return from a mission.[3] After Akutagawa promises to Atsushi Nakajima not to kill anyone for half a year, Gin notices Akutagawa's increasing irritability, attempting to find ways to pacify him, but knowing his demeanor leaves much to be desired in terms of relaxation.[8]

Skills Stealth: Gin has no ability but makes up for it by having incredible physical skills. She is naturally gifted in stealth as she was undetected by the assailants who killed her friends in the slums and has been noted as having eyes that "absorb sound" and being "so quiet that [it was like] she had been painted into reality". She is agile and poised, capable of sneaking behind her targets undetected, making her a valuable assassin in the Port Mafia.[4][9] Physical Prowess: Compared to her older brother, she is more physically fit and capable of handling long-term strenuous activity. Background She and her brother, Akutagawa, were orphans and used to live in the slums along with about eight other kids. The other children happened to overhear a conversation regarding the time and location of a shipment the Port Mafia was supposed to deliver to subordinates. The men knew about this and sought out the children and mercilessly shot down everyone but Gin and Akutagawa, who managed to escape, thanks to Gin's quick-thinking, to death. Afterward, Gin tended to her brother's wounds, and after he woke up stated her reservations about him seeking out vengeance against their assailants only for him to go anyways to prove the value of their friends' lives. After Osamu Dazai extends an invitation to the Port Mafia to Akutagawa, Gin joins as well; however, the full circumstances behind her decision remain unknown.[10]

In her early days in the Mafia, Gin was personally trained by Paul Verlaine, which allowed her to rise the ranks quickly at her young age, eventually leading her to be assigned as a battalion leader of the Black Lizard unit despite having no ability.[11]

Ichiyō Higuchi: Appearance Higuchi is a short, young woman. Her hair is blonde and comes down to her shoulders, which she usually keeps tied up into a messy bun. Her eyes are a deep brown color. She wears a black suit that she leaves unbuttoned and is also usually seen wearing a pair of rectangular, blue sunglasses.

When attempting to deceive the Armed Detective Agency, she has a more refined appearance. Her hair is let out of its usual bun and is brushed neatly. She is also seen without her sunglasses and her jacket and shirt buttoned up properly.

When bitten by Akutagawa, she transforms into a vampire and currently has a vampiric appearance.[1]

In her vampire form, her eyes are black without any pupil, with very messy hair.

As a mafioso, Higuchi proves ruthless and fearsome, not shying away from killing her targets. When confronted by the enemy, she has a distant atmosphere to herself, often strictly no-nonsense and showing little sympathy for them. Quick to act, she seldom tolerates disrespect and detests those who underestimate Port Mafia.[5][6]

Higuchi given a lecture by Mori Higuchi's hesitant nature about her job.

However, Higuchi's personality, as her boss and she herself notes, is rather unfit in the Port Mafia. Beneath her tough exterior, she is easy to upset, hesitant, and quick to question herself. She even contemplated leaving several times, despite the inevitable hardships defection foretold. As a result, her subordinates seldom show her respect, many following her orders out of fear of Akutagawa's wrath. An impulsive spirit also leads her to tend toward drastic measures, consequently going against orders.

Higuchi determined to save Akutagawa Higuchi's determined nature to save Akutagawa even if it risks her life.

Thankfully, her determined and honest nature earns her Black Lizard's respect. She proves reliable and incredibly brave, even if her judgment is easily clouded under pressure. Even if questioning her position in the mafia, Higuchi shoulders its burdens and responsibilities to this day, understanding its vital role in Yokohama's safety. She also makes it a point to not be unnecessarily cruel to her opponents, acting strictly professional in Akutagawa and Port Mafia's names.[7]

Her instinct to tell Akutagawa everything she knows ends up a key component to luring Akutagawa to The Guild's Moby Dick. However, Higuchi makes up her weaknesses for having a strong resolve, and she refuses to turn away when allies, especially Akutagawa, are in danger.

Her composure can often waver. Sometimes she is cool-headed and intimidating, other times easily unsettled and stressed out. Ultimately, she seems to excel more in covert operations than the frontlines, as a tendency to panic leaves her wide open in battle.

Her biggest weakness is her intense, bordering obsessive loyalty to Ryunosuke Akutagawa, whom she obeys almost unconditionally. She often insists on filling in for Akutagawa, worried about his poor health. Unfortunately, her loyalty is met with a frustrated Akutagawa's abusive and harsh treatment, often being called "unnecessary" to him. Nonetheless, Higuchi remains loyal to him.[5][6]

Ability Higuchi has an unknown ability,[8] however she is shown to be highly proficient with firearms. She is shown wielding pistols and sub-machine guns several times, and can easily wipe out a group using her firearms only.

Background The reason Higuchi joined the mafia is unknown. As of now, all that's known of her personal life is that she lives with her younger sister.[9]

Kyūsaku Yumeno: Appearance Q's hair is two-toned, the left side white and the right side black. Their eyes have different shaped pupils, with the right being a yellow star, and the left a yellow ring. Q wears a small hat tilted to the left, a white shirt and suspenders with a black coat and scarf around their neck, beige shorts with thin red stripes, brown shoes with high white socks that reach their calves, and a red sling bag with what appears to be a cat or dog design.

They always carry their doll, vital to their ability.

Advertisement Personality Although a child, Q has a twisted, sadistic personality, and revels in the carnage Dogra Magra creates. While they can play the part of a harmless, innocent child, they are quick to 180 into their darkest nature. Their sadistic personality leading to their confinement due to Dazai.

After the Guild abducts them, Q is made to suffer extreme physical and emotional trauma while ensnared in John Steinbeck's ability, which, spread throughout Yokohama, forces them to feel every instance of pain that the trees "feel". The pain overwhelms Q, to the point they snap and curse the entire city. Their breakdown drives them to question God's love for everyone and reveals their own intense hatred for humanity, themself, and their ability, which they never asked for.

Ability Main article: Dogra Magra Their ability, Dogra Magra (ドグラ・マグラ, Dogura Magura?), is a mind control curse that curses his targets or 'receivers' by ravaging their consciousness with hallucinations, causing them to attack everyone in sight with no regard on whom they might be; allies or foes, friends or enemies.[4] The 'receivers' are those that "hurt Q", by bumping into Q and causing the razor blades taped to their arms to cut into them. This curse is triggered by mutilating a doll that they carry, which is the source. A blotch in the shape of a hand print appears on the body of the cursed individual. After the doll is mutilated, it apparently regenerates. Thus far, the only way to stop Q's curse is with No Longer Human.

Influence According to Ichiyō Higuchi, the Mafia has dozens of enterprises under their control. It also exceeds politics and as well as economics and its influence is found in many sections of Yokohama. Those who defy them will only burn and not survive.[5]

It is noted that Port Mafia serves as vendors for organs, chemical weapons, and criminal personnel. They deal entirely in illegal products for underhanded organizations, and is considered the general trading company of the criminal underworld. They oversee countless shady operations and form connections with criminal organizations across the globe.

While the Mafia has vast reach, Osamu Dazai mentioned prior to acquiring a skilled business permit that the Port Mafia did not dabble in the drug industry. He further noted that the Special Division for Unusual Powers, narcotics bureau, and the military police's anti-organization surveillance committee waited for the Mafia to make such a blunder, making the drug industry more trouble than its worth.[3]

Advertisement Structure The Port Mafia divides its power largely between its boss and his five executives, who answer solely to him and lead their own factions within the Mafia. Originally, four identified executive positions were filled, including Dazai, Kōyō Ozaki, Chūya Nakahara, and Ace.

However, it was later revealed that Paul Verlaine is also an Executive. Due to him never leaving the underground Mafia shelter, he is never seen in meetings with his fellow Executives. With Dazai's defection and Ace's death, Kōyō, Chūya, and Verlaine remain as the three surviving executives, but Mori keeps Dazai's position reserved solely for him, somehow waiting for him to return. Training of assassins is largely handled by Paul Verlaine, who has trained both Gin and Kyōka who both became promising assassins in a short period of time. In Kyōka’s case, killing 35 people in a matter of 6 months and in Gin's, quickly rising the ranks to be part of the Black Lizard unit at her young age.[2]

Kōyō leads a major interrogation unit skilled in torture.[6] Another major faction of the Port Mafia is its guerilla attack force, led by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, having succeeded his former mentor Dazai. Working alongside him is Higuchi, who largely acts as his right hand.[7]

The Port Mafia also has an intelligence unit, largely maintained by Ango Sakaguchi in the past.[3]

A large number of Mafiosi are low-ranked, such as Sakunosuke Oda. Such ranks deal with many lowly and menial tasks such as managing security for paying stores and settling disputes between paid allies and their interpersonal conflicts or even being used as expendable assets as what Mori stated.[3]

Flags The Flags (also referred to as the Young Bloods) are a group of young Mafiosi aged 25 years old and below. Piano Man came up with the group name, after spending three months thinking of it, though most of the members forget it and don't use it. Its members include Lippmann, Piano Man, Albatross, Doc and Iceman. Each of the members have their own responsibility in the Mafia.[2]

Punishment The Mafia's modus operandi for traitors is to first force them to bite the curb and then deliver the kick to the back of the head, shattering their jaw. As the victim writhes in pain, they turn the poor soul around and fire three shots in the chest.[9]

History Before Mori's succession, after the current boss fell sick, the Mafia recklessly expanded its disputes which may have resulted to destroying the city.[10]

Plot Atsushi's Bounty Approach Akutagawa kidnaps Atsushi Akutagawa kidnaps Atsushi.

The Port Mafia takes part in capturing Atsushi Nakajima in order obtain a 7 billion yen on the black market to be used to control the underground.[7] The Mafia takes on four attempts on the man tiger's capture: including Higuchi and Akutagawa's joint operation[5], succeeded by the Black Lizard's infiltration of the agency office with the goal of eliminating all the agency members,[8] Kyōka and Motojirō's bomb threat scheme which eventually results to the former's split from the Mafia and the latter's defeat,[11][12] and finally with the help of the organization Karma Transit to kidnap Atsushi and transport him to a foreign nation.[13]

All of which four attempts fail making the bounty approach a failure.[14] It was revealed that an organization by the name of The Guild is responsible for the 7 billion yen bounty on Atsushi.[15]

This event led to Mori's decision to kill the president of the agency with the plan of focusing to resist the Guild after he was eliminated. The Mafia hired some outsider assassins to kill Fukuzawa but the pursuit failed however they successfully get hold of the agency's hideout and declares a three-way war to both the Guild and the agency.[6]

After the Guild war, the Mafia, specifically Ace, captures Fyodor Dostoevsky - the man responsible for Moby Dick's descent. By the end of Fyodor's capture, he outsmarts the Mafia executive which help him obtain the Mafia’s list of their ability users.[29]
