#BACKSTORY

The house was never stable — not when Micah was born, and definitely not after. Loud fights, drunken people — she learnt how to bite her tongue before she knew how to cry. She knew the act of a raised hand, a belt taken out and bible verses telling her to pray harder. Her dad was a lousy drunk with a shit job at the car dealership down the street. Her mom wasn’t bad, but she wasn’t good either — made excuse after excuse for the man that couldn’t control his own temper. An older brother who got the fuck out of dodge before Micah could even do multiplication. A sister who she shielded, or at least tried to.

Micah learned one thing throughout it all. That she needed to get stronger. Get better. Be bigger than her dad or her mom. Be bigger than the kids at school. Be meaner than them. If she was a bitch, a bully first, they wouldn’t get a chance to hurt her. That’s how she ran her life. At some point, people were drawn to that. It was high school afterall.

She graduated and applied to the academy. Got a badge because if she had it, she had a good reason to put her dad behind bars for a night. Maybe if she was bigger, scarier than him, he wouldn’t raise his hand at the thanksgiving table. So far, it’s worked just a little. She doesn’t talk about it with her mom, or her siblings. But they know, just like her dad knows — that one slip up, and Micah won’t let it stand. Not while she’s around, atleast.

#WORLD NOTES

CARMONA HILLS is a small, but growing town. Everyone knows everyone — and most people don’t know how to mind their business. The air is filled with sweet nothings and pretty lies that mix with bible verses and sunday sermons. It’s the kind of place where birch trees whisper which girl is in love with who, and what guy slipped something in someone’s drink last night.

CARMONA PD is the local precinct, located in downtown. Men and women follow to the tune of an older gentleman who acts as the police chief — the kind of man whose voice is loud and his silence even louder. Busy at all hours of the day — there isn’t anything that a little money and a small baggy of white can’t bury.

CARMONA FIRES handles everything from fires to rescuing cats from the tops of maple trees. Tight knit group of women and men, led by a white man with a beard that’s somehow balding. He has a loud voice — and he’s loudly wrong about most things, especially when he gets drunk and goes on rants about how homos shouldn’t exist in their little town.

STEVE’S is where you get your cars and wheels fixed. Originally built and operated by Steve White, it’s where wrenches and grease meet in harmony under the current owner, Nick White. You’ll find it is the sort of haven for misfits, and the spit out parts of Carmona Hills’ society.

PALMONA acts as the only safe place for those who don’t spit out bibleverses. Loud music — from Gaga to Chappell Roan, secret kisses passed between Long Islands and Bloody Marys. It’s the only gay club — although not officially known as a gay club — in town. You’ll find white women with bad bobs and pixie cuts throwing bibles by the front on monday mornings.
