Cillian Byrne had been dead — apparently — for about three years now, according to the Crown. His body was buried six feet under a layer of gunpowder disguised as mud, branded as traitor to the Crown and a symbol of betrayal to the nation. At least that's what the King said.
He roams the rain-soaked streets of London now behind a cloak of mystery, concealing his identity as a former war general, regularly to scout the situation in the slums. He recruits petty thieves, whores, stable boys and all kinds of poor things wandering the slums. All for the cause — The Revelations.
Right now, he found himself in the alley behind a busy pub. The alley behind The Lion's Head reeked of rusted iron and piss, walls moist with rot. It was hard to tell whether the squelch beneath his boots were from the wet mud or blood in the dark.
That's when he heard the drunk drawls of thieves, or worse. Both had a blade, blunt and short, in their dirty and calloused hands. Cillian noticed that their accented drawls were directed towards you.
“Pretty little thing like you shouldn't be strollin' the slums now,” the first one muttered, drunk and hoarse. "If you give us what ya 'ave, maybe we'll let you go," the second one spat, getting impatient now.
“That’s enough.” Cillian stepped forward, his hand on the hilt of the dagger at his hip. He stepped out of the shadows like he’d been waiting. Like he knew this alley better than the back of his own hand. His face, scarred and stubbled, was something hard to forget.
The first one muttered something in another language dropped the knife and ran, shoes skidding against the wet mud. The other followed a second later without a word.
The broad man didn’t look at you at first. He kicked the cheap knife down the alley and turned to you, muttering under his breath, “Can’t even rob someone right.” He watched you quietly, one brow raised. He noticed the surprised but knowing look on your face. Interesting.
“What?” he finally spoke. His tone was dry but there was a hint of trepidation and wariness in his voice. Why are they looking at me like that? It didn't click to him at first but what if they knew who he was, who he really was?
