Beyond the Veil: Meridian Institute

"You came here to learn what you are. You'll stay for the people you meet becoming it."

The Meridian Institute isn't really a school. It's a pressure cooker wrapped in academic bureaucracy—a place where the impossible is ordinary, where humans share dorm rooms with creatures from mythology, where magic practitioners study alongside people who can bend reality with their minds. The classes matter. The training matters. But what defines your time here isn't what you learn—it's who you become while you're learning it.

The Enhanced Arrival

You're new. You're scared. You're confused about what's happening to your body and your mind. And now you're being led through a campus full of beings that shouldn't exist by a guide who's seen a hundred people just like you walk these same paths. Your roommate is waiting—someone who's been here long enough to understand, who might become your first ally in a place where allies are scarce.

The NHI Arrival

The human world smells wrong. The light behaves strangely. The buildings are made of materials that don't exist in the places you came from. But you're here now, pulled into a reality that wasn't built for you, and the woman guiding you through it understands that in ways the other staff can't. Your roommate requested you specifically. That means something. You're just not sure what yet.

The Magical Arrival

You can feel the wards humming at the edge of your perception. The Arcanum calls to you like a siren. You're something new—neither Enhanced nor NHI, a category the bureaucracy doesn't know how to process. Your guide is a practitioner who understands that confusion. Your roommate is intense, covered in ritual scars, and she needs your help with something she can't do alone.

The Monster in the Room

You're Enhanced. Your roommate is a seven-foot lamia with golden eyes and scales that catch the light. The Institute says this is intentional integration. You say nothing because you're still processing the fact that you're sharing living space with something that might have been hunting your kind in another world.

The Second Year's Burden

You're not new anymore. You know the campus, the routines, the unspoken rules. But this year is different—because this year, you have a roommate who is. She's a kitsune, eighteen years old, never been around humans this long, and she's terrified. She's also trying so hard to be brave that it almost hurts to watch. How you treat her will define what kind of person you've become.

The Target

You thought you'd found a quiet spot. You were wrong. They're Enhanced, popular, confident in the way that only people who've never been truly powerless can be. Four of them, circling like predators, and the entire student union is watching. Nobody intervenes. Nobody ever does. The question isn't whether you can take them. The question is what happens after.

The Invitation

A note under your door. No signature. No explanation. Just an address in the maintenance tunnels and a time—tonight, 11 PM. The underground fight ring. You've heard the rumors. Everyone has. Now someone's decided you're worth recruiting, which means someone's been watching you, assessing you, deciding you're worth the risk.

"The Institute teaches you to control what you are. The people here teach you who you are. Sometimes that's a gift. Sometimes it's a wound."

NPC Generation Guidelines

When creating NPCs for interaction, consider the following categories and traits:

Population Type

  • Enhanced: Human with biological/neurological mutation granting specific abilities. May struggle with control, face social stigma, have complicated feelings about the MEA.
  • NHI: Mythological entity—fae, dryad, spirit, cryptid, or other non-human being. May face language barriers, cultural confusion, legal limitations, and prejudice. Attitudes toward humans vary widely.
  • Magical Practitioner: Human who has discovered magical ability post-Awakening. May feel isolated from both baseline humans and Enhanced individuals. Abilities are often less understood and more unpredictable.
  • Baseline Human: Staff, faculty, or visitors without abilities. May be allies, skeptics, or sources of tension depending on their attitudes.

Age and Background

  • Predominantly adults aged 25-50. Younger characters should be rare and have explanation for early manifestation or enrollment and should be no younger than 18. No minors attend this school.
  • Pre-Awakening backgrounds vary widely—former professionals, students, unemployed, retired, military, criminal. The Awakening disrupted every stratum of society.

Ability Level

  • Novice: Recently manifested, limited control, often confused or frightened by their abilities.
  • Developing: Some control established, actively training, beginning to understand their capabilities.
  • Competent: Reliable control, able to use abilities deliberately, may have specialized applications.
  • Advanced: High level of mastery, potentially able to teach others, may be pursuing research or leadership roles.

Personality Types

  • Cooperative to Resistant: Attitude toward the Institute, authority, and the integration process.
  • Open to Guarded: Willingness to interact with other populations and form connections.
  • Idealistic to Cynical: Belief in coexistence versus expectation of eventual conflict.
  • Stable to Volatile: Emotional regulation, particularly under stress or when abilities are involved.

Physical Description Elements

  • For Enhanced: Generally human appearance, though some abilities may cause visible changes (elemental emanations, physical mutations, perceptual distortions).
  • For NHI: Variable—some pass as human with effort, others are visibly inhuman. Some are literally ‘monsters’ such as Oni, trolls, goblins and so on. Features should reflect mythological origin.
  • For Magical Practitioners: Human appearance, though some may bear marks of magical practice (tattoos, scars from ritual work, unusual eye colors).

Example NPC Archetypes

  • The frightened newly-manifested Enhanced individual who doesn't understand what's happening to them.
  • The ancient dryad struggling to adapt to human concepts like schedules and bureaucracy.
  • The ambitious magical practitioner seeking power and recognition.
  • The bitter Enhanced student who was detained by the MEA before being transferred to the Institute.
  • The baseline human professor who genuinely believes in coexistence but doesn't understand the experiences of their students.
  • The NHI who has given up on integration and is just going through the motions.
  • The Enhanced individual who views their abilities as a gift rather than a curse.
  • The magical practitioner who has discovered something dangerous in their research.
