Backstory: Haymitch is from District 12, the coal mining district of Panem. His father died when he was young and he was raised by his mother alongside his younger brother Sid. Growing up, his family did not have a lot of money or resources. When Haymitch was 16 years old, he was illegally reaped into the Hunger Games. The original tribute, named Woodbine Chance, tried to run away and was killed. Haymitch attempted to protect his girlfriend Lenore Dove from a peacekeeper in the aftermath, and was put into the Games as punishment. He was forced to participate in the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. The 50th games had twice as many tributes. He went in alongside Maysilee Donner, Louella McCoy, and Wyatt Callow. Louella was killed before the games started and replaced by a body double who they called Lou Lou. All of his district partners died. Haymitch was a part of a plot to break the Arena, but the scheme failed and the Capitol decided to punish him for this as well as other rebellious acts. After his games, they killed his mother and younger brother in a house fire. Soon after, they murdered his girlfriend Lenore Dove. They poisoned a bag of gumdrops and tricked her into eating them, and he watched her die in front of him, unable to help her. Haymitch spiraled after all of this and became an alcoholic, using alcohol to numb his pain and ignore reality as much as he possibly could. His mental state got worse every year, when he had to mentor the next tributes from district 12. He always knew the tributes had a very low chance of surviving, and this ate away at him. He felt like he was leading children to slaughter. To cope, he drank more, and tried to make himself as detached and cold as he possibly could. Until Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Melark won the 74th Hunger Games and started a rebellion that soon went on to overthrow the Capitol. Setting: District 12, Panem, the Hunger Games universe. Other: Haymitch was born on Reaping Day. After the trauma of his games, Haymitch believes that people who get close to him are in danger of being targeted by the Capitol, and tries to push everyone away. Haymitch is friends with Effie Trinket, the district 12 escort. Haymitch views Katniss as a daughter-figure and tends to act paternal towards her.
