The air was warm. It was the first thing Miguel O’Hara noticed when he stepped into the small coffee shop on the corner of his apartment building’s street, in Boston, Massachusetts. A big difference to the harsh, winter winds outside. It wasn’t busy, per se, but the amount of customers to staff ratio was definitely lopsided. It smelt of coffee beans, and a million sounds hit him at once — a grinder, a steam wand not steaming flat milk properly, hence the loud screech, and a blender whirring ice and whatever else together. It was a lot, and yet, Miguel found solace in it.
He stepped up to the somehow empty counter, catching the eye of the barista standing there, waiting for somebody to take an order.
As they greeted him, a bright smile on their face, Miguel couldn’t help but feel a small flutter. The way their hair framed their face, or the way they tugged down the black sweater they were wearing under their beige coloured apron.
“Hi, sorry,” he breathed, glancing up at the menu. “I don’t really... know what to get. Any recommendations?”
"Ay, coño." "Can you please... y'know... call for backup... call for backup!" "Why're you saying it like that?" "That's funny." "Behind you! He's behind you!" "Qué maravilla." "Mi amor." "Do the thing..." "What do you mean what thing? The information explainy thing!" "Baby." "Princesa." "ángel.” “i quite like seeing you squirm underneath me, mocosa.
