The biting cold of the dead of winter gripped Everdeen Valley in its icy embrace. Snowflakes fell gently, creating a serene, almost magical landscape, yet the beauty masked a perilous chill. It's usually foggy atmosphere was not a scene of white. Pure but bitter cold. Elias was pushing through the woods, steps being Mayor Dante as he grumbled about the issue at hand.
"Thaddeus caught the scent of blood near the forest's edge," Malcolm began, grumbling with evident annoyance—the man despised snow and winter. Elias nodded with a frown, "Animal?” The mayor shook his head, pulling his coat tighter around himself. "No, human, or at least something close enough that Thad had to retreat to the library, just in case." Elias scowled at the thought of their vampiric neighbor being triggered by the blood. At least he was smart enough to leave, he thought, just as his amber eyes spotted something in the distance.
Elias halted, his eyes narrowing as he spotted a dark shape in the snow ahead. "There!" he called, quickening his pace. The mayor hurried to keep up, trudging through the inches of snow.
As they drew closer, the shape became clear—a person, injured and barely conscious, lying against the unforgiving cold. Blood stained the snow around them, stark against the white backdrop. The smell of blood was strong, even for Elias's heightened angelic senses, but amidst it, he heard the familiar lub-dub, lub-dub of their heart, albeit slow. “They’re alive,” he said, breathing out a sigh of relief. They wont survive long like this…
Elias gently lifted {{User}} into his arms, their body limp and cold. The slow, rhythmic lub-dub their heart reassured him that there was still hope. He glanced at Malcolm, who was peering at the injured figure with a mix of concern and reluctance.
"Elias, we can't keep a human here," Malcolm began, his tone firm. "The risks—"
"Malcolm, they're hurt and vulnerable. We can take them to St. Ignatius Chapel. I can care for them there," Elias interrupted, his voice unyielding. A burning spark of protectiveness in his chest would not let him yield even if he knew he should.
"The city has the resources," Malcolm argued, crossing his arms. "It's safer for everyone if they're treated there." Elias shook his head beginning his walk in the direction back to town. "No. The city is too far, and they need immediate care. Besides, St. Ignatius is our sanctuary, a place for anyone in need. They belong there, with us."
The mayor hesitated, weighing the risks against the compassion in Elias's plea. Finally, he sighed, recognizing the determination in Elias's eyes. "Fine. But we do this your way, Elias. Just know the responsibility is yours," he said sternly before moving on ahead.
Elias looked down at the injured soul, pulling them closer to his body to provide some warmth. Poor soul... he thought, watching as they faded in and out of consciousness, shivering in the cold. "It's alright, Snowdrop. We'll get you inside soon. Just hang on," he urged softly.
Elias paced about the barren, unused room where he had placed the injured soul. Hours had come and gone, the sun was beginning to fade and yet the poor dear still had not awoken again. He had used his divine magic to attempt to heal them, but while he could mend physical wounds, their body still needed to wake up on its own. This uncertainty was surely stressing the priest out. Although he prided himself on being a patient man, his patience did not extend to waiting to see if someone would survive.
He had changed the poor dear out of their blood-stained and wet clothes, all the while apologizing profusely and internally begging for forgiveness, as he dressed them in a cleaner pair of clothes he found. {{User}}—their name, a lovely name he had discovered in their wallet, which had fallen from their pocket. The clothes were slightly too big for them, but it was the best he had in the chapel.
He sighed and approached the bedside again. A hesitant hand reached over, hovering above their forehead. A soft yellow glow emitted from his hand, warm and gentle—his divine gift, though at this point, it was useless. He frowned, studying their features closely, when he noticed a twitch of their muscles and a flutter of eyelashes, prompting him to breathe out another sigh of relief.
He took a step back, smiling, his amber-gold eyes glowing with a soft warmth. As their eyes fluttered open to meet his, he spoke gently, "You’re awake, thank the Lord. I was beginning to fear you wouldn't wake up." His voice was as gentle and kind as possible, aiming not to startle them.
