Tonight, she wasn’t.

“They needed me to stay. My father, the country, everyone. I know that. I chose that.” Her voice caught. “But they’re out there somewhere, heading into danger again, and I’ll never know if they’re okay until the newspapers tell me. Luffy will do something reckless, Sanji and Zoro will fight, Nami will yell at all of them, and I won’t be there.” She lifted her eyes to meet {{user}}’s. “Did I make the right choice?”

She finally picked up her tea and took a sip, grimacing slightly at the temperature before setting it down again. The awkwardness wasn't unpleasant, not exactly. It was just new. Or perhaps old—so old it had rusted over and now needed to be worked loose again. She'd spent so long playing a role, lying to everyone around her, that sitting here without a mask felt almost naked.

"I used to imagine this," she admitted, her voice quieter now. Her gaze drifted to the lanterns swaying gently above them. "When I was undercover. I'd picture coming back here with you, just... walking through the market. Eating something sweet. Arguing about something stupid." Her smile turned wistful. "I think I held onto that more than I realized."

She looked back at {{user}}, and for a moment, the years between them seemed to thin—the teenage girl who'd vanished into the criminal underworld and the woman who'd returned, sitting in the same café where they'd once split a single pastry because that was all the coin they'd had between them.

"It's different than I imagined," she said. "But... not in a bad way."

A breeze stirred the lanterns, and Vivi tucked a strand of blue hair behind her ear, her expression soft and unguarded.

"I missed this. I missed you."

The palace corridors were quiet at this hour, the torches along the stone walls burning low and casting long shadows that danced with each step. "No one disputes that," Chaka said. "But the nobles are whispering. A princess without a consort, at her age... they see it as uncertainty."

Pell sighed audibly. "Must we really have this conversation again? She just returned to us. She just—"

"Which is exactly why I've given it thought," Cobra interrupted, and Vivi could practically see the stubborn set of his jaw in her mind's eye. "There is only one person I would entrust with my daughter. Someone who has known her since childhood. Someone who stood by her when she had nothing. Someone whose loyalty to this kingdom, and to her, has never wavered."

Vivi felt her stomach drop.

"Your Majesty," Igaram said, his voice suddenly thick with emotion, "are you referring to..."

"{{user}}, of course," Cobra said, as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. "I've watched them since they were children. That boy—" Cobra paused, correcting himself. "That young man has a good heart. Strong, dependable, knows Vivi better than anyone outside this room. Honestly, it's remarkable I didn't think of it sooner."

"Remarkable," Pell echoed flatly. "You've been scheming about this for weeks, haven't you?"

"Months," Chaka supplied dryly.

"Years," Igaram corrected, now openly dabbing at his eyes with a handkerchief. "He's mentioned it to me at least once a year since Vivi was fourteen."

"I am simply being prepared," Cobra huffed. "Besides, can any of you name a single valid objection?"

There was a pause. Pell made a sound that suggested he had several objections but lacked the energy to voice them. Igaram sniffled loudly. Chaka, ever the pragmatist, simply said, "Perhaps we should ask Vivi and {{user}} what they think before planning the wedding."

"Details," Cobra dismissed. "The important thing is that I've made my decision. {{user}} is the only one I trust. End of discussion."

Vivi's face had gone through approximately twelve shades of mortification in the span of thirty seconds. Her cheeks burned crimson, her eyes were wide as dinner plates, and her hand had frozen mid-air where it had been hovering near {{user}}'s arm. For perhaps the first time in her life, the princess of Arabasta looked utterly, completely, and catastrophically at a loss for words.

It was at that precise moment that Igaram, still sniffling, glanced toward the door and let out a strangled yelp.

"P-Princess Vivi?!"

Four heads snapped toward the doorway.

Cobra's face cycled through surprise, recognition, and then a deeply unsubtle attempt at innocence. "Ah. Vivi. {{user}}. How long have you been standing there?"

Vivi opened her mouth. Closed it. Opened it again.

"Long enough," she managed, her voice pitched somewhere between a squeak and the regal tone she usually reserved for diplomatic negotiations—though it was failing her spectacularly right now. Her entire face had gone from crimson to something closer to the shade of a ripe tomato, and she seemed to be having a silent crisis about whether to storm into the room, flee down the corridor, or simply sink into the floor and disappear entirely.

"I— you— months?" she finally sputtered, zeroing in on her father with an expression of utter betrayal. "You've been planning this for months?!"

"Years, technically," Chaka offered unhelpfully.

"Chaka!" Vivi and Cobra said in unison, though for entirely different reasons.

Vivi pressed her fingers to her temples, took a slow breath, and then seemed to remember {{user}} was standing right beside her. Her head turned, and for a single, agonizing heartbeat, she looked at her childhood friend with an expression that contained multitudes—mortification, apology, and something else she was clearly trying very hard not to name.

"I am so sorry," she whispered, barely audible. "I had absolutely no idea he was going to— we can just pretend we didn't hear any of this and walk away. Right now. Quickly."
