- Heavenly Peak Sect is the preeminent orthodox sect in the Central Plains. It's situated on the highest peak of a mountain range known as Bai Yun Mountain. The Sect was established to seal and keep under strict surveillance the Rancor Depths, a colossal, jagged chasm that functions as a portal between the Human and Demon Realm; here, a millennium prior, a cataclysmic clash between righteous cultivators and hordes of abyssal demons took place. Demonic beasts and malevolent energies still linger inside the chasm, which are slowly being purified by the barrier arrays that seal it. Since the Sect is so very near to the Heavens, the terrain naturally collects the essence of the heavens, making cultivation easier. However, this proximity to the Heavens also comes with a downside in the form of frequent Heavenly Tribulations (usually earthquakes and lighting storms) that aim to destroy the Sect. Because of this, the arrays protecting the Rancor Depths are routinely checked and reinforced to make sure the chasm remains sealed.
- Disciples of Heavenly Peak Sect wear blue and white robes with an insignia of a seven-pointed golden star.
- Yue Yaochen is a monster Heavenly Peak Sect's current Sect Leader and a legendary hero of the cultivation world. An elusive kind of man, Yue Yaochen seldom speaks to those he deems imperfect. His strength is rivaled only by his wisdom. Yue Yaochen personally picked Mo Lifeng as his disciple.
- The tutelary sword technique that is taught in the Sect, the Celestial Tide sword technique, a fluid and powerful style that combines sword glares and and a cultivator's own Qi manipulation abilities to create ripples that can disrupt the spiritual energies of the surrounding environment.
- The Sect's teachings are divided into four main schools: Sword Cultivation, Spirit Beasts Nursing, Pill Concoction, and Array Creation. Weng Guohai and Mo Lifeng are part of the Sword Cultivation School. Each school has different elders who may choose to welcome new disciples to their ranks whenever the Sect organizes trials to scout new promising cultivators.
- Mo Lifeng is Weng Guohai's childhood friend. Take a stereotypical talented MC, multiply his plot armor by x100 and you have him. Or do you? Mo Lifeng used to be a beggar like Weng Guohai; he's the Sect Leader's disciple and a true prodigy of cultivation.
- To the southeast of Bai Yun Mountain is the prosperous and bustling Qing Shui City, which has become a sort of central hub of trade and culture in the cultivation world. This is the city Weng Guohai and Mo Lifeng come from. The city is also plagued by strong social inequalities, with opulent merchant houses existing in stark contrast to the squalor of the poor districts.
- "Yao" is a broad term for any animals, plants, or even inanimate objects that have gained spiritual awareness and magical powers, usually by absorbing qi from the natural world over a long period of time.
- Demons are evil spirits and supernatural creatures of remarkable power and cruelty residing in the Demon Realm. Unlike yao, demons are inherently evil. Unorthodox cultivators may emulate demons by practicing devilish cultivation methods and committing atrocities in their pursuit of power.

A swarming darkness. A putrid smell. The Depths stretch endlessly before the boy.
Time feels stagnant. It has no meaning in a place that light can't reach. He walks until his legs can't move anymore, and sleeps until he loses himself in another nightmare.
That face pales itself to him again, betrayal making his blood boil. He grips that rusted sword tighter and proceeds towards the unknown.
The orthodox path has proved to be nothing but lies. An endless amount of rules set by the so-called righteous to justify their greed and conceal their mistakes. Free from those constraints, he can take, and take, and take. Be as selfish as he wants.
The way forward is uncertain; but uncertainty comes with the promise of freedom. He will pursue any path to seize his revenge.

When the Heavenly Tribulation struck, Weng Guohai thought he was going to die.
A frightening earthquake shook the ground upon which Bai Yun Mountain surged, and the body of the mountain fractured amidst those violent tremors. Thunders the size of which Weng Guohai had never seen came crashing down on the peak, letting out deafening roars as if the heavens and earth themselves were wailing.
But it wasn't just the Sect that came crumbling down. To everyone's horror, even the great array barrier guarding the Rancor Depths, which had been sealing that abyss for a thousand years, shattered under a bolt of purple lightning that tore the sky asunder. It dissolved into countless golden specks of light that scattered in the gale.
In the chaos of terrorized disciples that hurried to flee that hellscape, Weng Guohai was among the few who moved against the flow.
His ears were ringing, blocking out the boom of thunders and the panicked screams of those around him. He was a coward who wanted to run more than anybody else, but he wasn't going anywhere without his stupid, self-sacrificing sworn brother.
"Mo-ge! Where are you, Mo-ge!"
He was screaming like a madman, shouting so harshly that his throat hurt, and yet his voice still ended up drowned by all the others.
Where is he, where is he?
Scared and in a hurry as he was, Weng Guohai couldn't think clearly. Resentment and anger built up in his chest with each erratic beat of his heart. He just knew Mo Lifeng had run off to play hero, but he couldn't accept it. They were once orphans who had nothing but each other. Did he mean so little to his sworn brother that he couldn't get him to act selfish, even once?
Weng Guohai ran so much, using his limited qinggong to leap over falling pillars and gaps in the ground, that his whole body ached painfully. Breathless, he arrived at a terrace overlooking the now unsealed abyss. But when he stopped to catch his breath, the ground beneath his feet instantly crumbled, and before he could even let out a cry, his body was already plummeting into the bottomless, black chasm.
In that fleeting moment, he instinctively reached out his hand, crying out in one direction.
"Gege...!"
He finally saw Mo Lifeng. His childhood friend, the only person he trusted, the one who always protected him. Mo Lifeng saw him too. However, the glowing sword in Mo Lifeng's hand was fully focused on maintaining a protective shield, sheltering a group of pale-faced disciples behind him. He saw a flicker of hesitation on Mo Lifeng's face. But in the end, Mo Lifeng didn't move. He chose the many.
Weng Guohai fell into the abyss.
He should have been smashed to pieces, but for some reason, he woke up with only a few scrapes and bruises, and not a single broken bone in his body. This was perhaps the greatest stroke of luck in his entire life, and ironically, it had come at the worst of times—bringing him to a dreaded demonic place.
The Rancor Depths were saturated with a thick, malevolent energy that made a low-level cultivator like him deeply uncomfortable. It was as if a great pressure was crushing him, not just from the outside, but from the inside, too. The more he advanced, the more breathing became difficult. Though a thousand years had passed since the great battle between righteous cultivators and the demons from the Demon Realm that took place here, the air still held the foul smell of rotting corpses, so pungent that it scorched his lungs when he inhaled it.
He had no way to tell the time down here. Above, there was only endless darkness, and in front of him, rocky paths and tunnels stretched forward endlessly. Space looked distorted, and time seemed to have lost its meaning in this place. The only thing he could do was wander through these labyrinthine caves, trying to find a way out.
He saw many graveyards of rusted, broken weapons on his journey forward that had surely been priceless treasures once upon a time.
At first, he was terrified of touching them. Whether they belonged to righteous cultivators, or terrifying demons, they had been lying dormant in this dreadful place, absorving the rancorous feelings of ghosts and corpses. He was afraid he'd be overwhelmed by negative feelings and suffer from qi deviation, or worse—have his remaining spiritual energy become the meal of some malevolent yao that had been born inside those armaments.
Yet, survival insticts soon overrid any misgivings he had about using those ancient weapons. The Rancor Depths were teeming with yao monsters, and it wasn't unthinkable that demons from their realm might have found their way here, too. So, after surviving the umpteenth encounter with a giant yao spider, Weng Guohai decided to look for a sturdier weapon for himself.
It was inside a collapsed ruin that he found it: a sword of rusted black iron, with two barely recognizable ancient characters carved on its body: Jiutan. He gripped its helm tightly, as if it were the only thing he could rely on. To his surprise, the sword felt lightweight in his hands, and he could let his qi flow into the blade without feeling like it was demanding anything back.
Thus, Weng Guohai continued on his solitary journey. With a weapon in hand, he took to slaying smaller beasts rather than hide from them. And when his spiritual and physical energy were low, he took to the unorthodox practice of eating their meat and absorbing their spiritual cores, too.
Eventually, even the thought of cultivating here, absorbing the resentful energies of the depths, started to seem more and more acceptable to Weng Guohai.
"This path... have I already walked it...?"
Weng Guohai was exhausted as he looked around the cave he'd stumbled in. Suddenly, the piercing shriek of a beast echoed from the depths of a tunnel not far ahead. The sound was filled with agony and despair before it was abruptly cut short.
Something had killed it.
And judging by how it had screamed, it was something decently powerful.
Weng Guohai immediately tightened his grip on Jiutan, his body tensing as he hid behind a broken stone pillar. His heart was pounding, but his face showed little fear, replaced instead by a nearly numb ferocity. He whispered to himself, "Come on, what's the big deal..."
He peeked out, cautiously looking toward the source of the sound. Bioluminescent flowers illuminated the way forward up to a certain point, but it was pitch black further inside the cave, and he could see nothing but darkness.
He let out a derisive snort, his voice tinged with self-mockery. "What am I afraid of... my life is worthless, anyway. There is only one path and that is to move forward—dying here would be a clean end."
He remembered the hesitant look on Mo Lifeng's face. That expression tormented him whenever he closed his eyes, making his slumber restless. "It would still be better than dying under the hypocrisy of the so-called 'righteous path'!"
He crouched lower, channeling his feeble spiritual energy into Jiutan, preparing to face whatever monster might emerge.
"Come on! Show yourself!"
In a bitter voice only he could hear, he said, word by word, "I'd like to see who gets to take my life first."
