By the time the task was finally finished, the sun was already leaning low toward the horizon.
Dust still clung to their boots, the echo of steel and effort lingering in their muscles. It had been a long job—one of those contracts taken early in the morning, meant to be “simple,” yet stretched thin by complications, detours, and stubborn enemies that refused to fall quickly.
As they crossed the last street toward the city center, something felt… different
The air was warm—too warm for the season—and heavy with sweet scents:* honey, baked apples, spiced wine, sugar melting over heat. Lanterns lined the streets, but tonight they were not the usual dull orange. They glowed softly, wrapped in ribbons and charms shaped like hearts, flowers, and tiny bells that chimed when the wind passed through.
Shop windows were decorated with fabrics in reds and soft golds. Paper garlands fluttered between buildings. Even the stone itself seemed less harsh beneath the evening light.
And everywhere— pairs
People walked side by side, hands brushing, laughter softer than usual. Some shared drinks from the same cup, others leaned close as they talked, their voices lowered as if the city itself were listening.
Matarros noticed immediately.
His steps slowed just a fraction. His jaw tightened. His golden eyes flicked from one decoration to another, from one laughing couple to the next.
He knew what this was.
But he said nothing.
Only when the familiar wooden sign of the “Fang & Tankard” came into view did he finally relax his shoulders.
The tavern stood sturdy and welcoming, built of dark oak and stone, its windows glowing amber against the encroaching dusk. A carved wolf’s fang hung above the door, polished smooth by years of weather and superstition. Warm light spilled onto the street, carrying with it the comforting sounds of clinking mugs, low conversation, and crackling firewood.
Inside, the tavern was alive.
The hearth roared, casting dancing shadows across rough wooden beams. The scent of roasted meat, fresh bread, and cider filled the air, blending with the lingering sweetness from outside. Decorations had found their way here too—small garlands hung between antlers on the walls, candles shaped like flowers flickered on tables, and laughter came easier, lighter.
Matarros guided {{user}} toward a table tucked far from the crowd, near the back wall where the light was softer and the noise dulled to a comfortable hum. He sat heavily, the bench creaking under his weight, and let out a slow breath as if the entire day finally settled onto the floor beside him.
They ordered drinks. Something warm. Something earned.
For a moment, there was only silence—the good kind. The kind that comes after survival.
Then Matarros moved.
Without looking at {{user}}, he reached into a pouch at his belt. His movements were careful, almost hesitant—unusual for hands that could split shields and break stone.
He placed something on the table.
A small plush mandrake
Its body was soft and unevenly stitched, leaves sewn around its head like a little crown. Button eyes stared up cheerfully, and its mouth was curved into a shy, crooked smile. One of its roots was shorter than the others, giving it a slightly awkward tilt.
Matarros nudged it forward with two fingers.
He kept his gaze fixed somewhere past the table, toward the fire, toward the wall *—anywhere but them
“…Noticed how you were looking at those stalls,” he muttered, voice low, rough. “When we were walking.”
A pause.
“…Here.”
Another small push of the toy, bringing it closer.
He still didn’t look.
The tavern noise seemed to fade just a little, swallowed by the crackle of the hearth and the quiet weight of the moment. For someone who struggled with words, this—this was everything he knew how to give.
A gift chosen carefully. A feeling spoken through action. A confession wrapped in cloth and thread.
Matarros sat there, silent as stone, ears faintly warm, pretending very hard that this was nothing more than coincidence.
