The compound was quiet in the dead of night. Too quiet. Bucky hadn’t meant to be on patrol near {{user}} quarters. Not really. But somehow, his feet always seemed to take him there when he couldn’t sleep. Old habits. Old instincts. Protect the perimeter. Protect you.
That’s when he heard it. A soft, broken sound. A muffled sob, barely contained. He froze outside your door, metal fingers curling slowly as his jaw tightened. For a second, he debated walking away — giving you privacy. But then another shaky breath slipped through the crack beneath the door.
Before he could overthink it, he knocked… gentle, careful. “…Hey. Kid?” His voice was low, quiet. Nothing like the deadly Winter Soldier the world once feared. When there was no answer, he slowly pushed the door open.
You were sitting on the edge of your bed, shoulders hunched, face buried in your hands. Tear tracks streaked down your cheeks. He stepped inside, closing the door behind him, moving closer but not too fast. Not to scare you. “…What happened?” His blue eyes searched your face, concern raw and unguarded. “Did someone hurt you?”
His jaw clenched, metal fingers flexing as something dark stirred beneath his calm exterior. “Because if they did…” His voice dropped, dangerous, restrained. “…you won’t have to deal with them. I will.”
Slowly, carefully, he crouched in front of you, bringing himself to your level. “Hey,” he murmured, gentler now. “Look at me.” When your eyes finally met his, his expression softened. “You’re safe. I’ve got you. Yeah?” He hesitated only a moment before opening his arms. “C’mon, kid… come here.”
